Pre diabetes post bypass surgery?

I had an alarming text from my GP surgery telling me the result of a blood test showed that I’m pre diabetic and that I could enroll onto a programme to improve my lifestyle! I was absolutely shocked . I contacted my GP surgery (using the irritating on line form /application for advice of doom 🤦🏼) explaining my current lifestyle , physical activity, previous stats for BP, HR , ECG, that I dint eat sugary or ultra processed food, make my own bread to reduce salt & sugar etc .. height & weight … and asked for some context around the result .

I was pleased to get a call back from a GP that I get on well with and she thought it was probably a false positive reading , she is aware of my lifestyle , nutrition and rehab post Nstemi & 4xCABG on July 2023. My Doc said the result would indicate that I would have had to have put on a shed load of weight whereas I’ve weight (not a shed load or unexplained ) by making some tweaks in my nutrition and exercise. She suggested getting another test done to make sure .

it’s got me pretty worried 😟 if I’m honest .. I’m sure we will get to the bottom of it soon enough.

Has anyone else experienced this type of thing ?

After recently being diagnosed with high blood pressure I too was told by my GP that my HB blood test showed I was pre-diabetic and was sent a link by text to enroll in the diabetes programme! I too have a very healthy diet. I have declined and have decided to deal with it myself by losing a bit of weight (I'm only 1 stone over my ideal weight) and exercising more than I already do. In 2 weeks I've lost 4lbs. I feel that asking me to enrol on such a scheme was a bit of a knee jerk reaction and I should have been given the opportunity to make the changes myself to take me out of the pre-diabetic stage and if that didn't work then maybe get help and advice through the diabetes programme. That said, maybe some people do need that support. Anyway I will continue towards my goal to take me out of the pre-diabetes stage and hope it works (I know of someone personally who did the same and it definitely worked). Wishing you well.

Thanks indiedot, I’m all over the training , have been for months . Now running 5k 3 times a week , 1-2 challenging yoga classes a week , physical work round my farm , steps up to 22k on certain days , great nutrition. IT’s bemusing.

Hi,

Before my illness started in 2017 I used to run 5k twice a week and play 5 a side football.

During my recovery I had been unable to exercise and during regular blood tests I would be told I was pre diabetic. A further test would be required which always came back negative. This happened many times in the early stages of my recovery.

Like you my diet was pretty good but unfortunately I was unable to exercise much over the next 6 years. Early last year my blood test results taken after I had a procedure to plug a leak around my Aortic valve came back 10 points above the threshold and I was prescribed Metformin by my GP.

The procedure finally enabled me to take up exercise again within a controlled environment and my next blood test results came back just 1 point above the threshold.

I am currently still exercising in the gym albeit after a minor feinting episode whilst on the treadmill caused a 6 week lay off but hopefully when my bloods are taken next time they will be below the threshold which will mean coming off the Metformin.

Good luck.

Are you on any medication? I ask because the beta blocker I have can raise blood glucose levels, it says it can in the patient information leaflet, so I've had a pre-diabetic level a few times. When my beta blocker dose was halved my blood glucose returned to normal. It might be worth a phone call to Diabetes UK, they are really helpful. I was devastated the first time I got a pre-diabetic level, and got the most useful advice from them.

Thanks , it had crossed my mind that my meds could be contributing. I have stopped artovastatin (3 weeks ago) under Doc guidance as I thought it was making my muscles/tendons/joints very painful. He’s prescribed another statin that I picked up yesterday and I read that diabetes melitus s on the possible side effects. I’ve asked gp if I should wait until after next blood test before resuming a statin. I level never had high cholesterol, my lates reading for overall cholesterol was 2.4 on the arvovastatin. I am also on pantaprazole, clopidogrel, 1.25mg been Bisoprolol and half a 1.25 Rampiril..,

Bisoprolol was the culprit for me. I was on 2.5 mg when I had those results, dose was halved, blood glucose was within normal levels then.

hi Dwizza, just over a year ago I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and referred to the type of course you mention. I had lost over two stones during the previous 18 months, though I was still overweight, so I was sure I was eating in a healthier way than before but I learned a lot about the types of food that raise blood sugar, by no means always sugary foods or those traditionally seen as unhealthy. Bananas and porridge together, for example. Apparently some of these “good” foods cause blood sugar spikes and I realised I was eating too many carbs, eg bread which we also made ourselves. It tasted so much better than shop bought bread that I was eating much more of it than I should. During the course, I cut my intake of carbs down and although I did not lose a great deal more weight, my blood sugars returned to normal levels and have stayed there since, which I was delighted about. So the course was useful, though I too was less than happy about it initially. Of course your own food intake may be perfectly healthy and the blood test may be an anomaly, but one thing to consider is that some people can have problems with their pancreas not working so well I believe, regardless of diet, so it would be good to have the test repeated. Hope it goes well for you.

I was diagnosed Type I back in the sixties but know many Type IIs but only one Type i (aged 21). The other one I knew died at Christmas at 85. For over a decade I sat in the committee of a Diabetic Support Group and encountered many Type I's and II's. Pre-diabetes can usually be reversed and Type II put into remission by lifestyle changes. However as you say it is no guarantee so if HbA1c remains raised or goes into the diabetes range accept medication I knew one person who did not take it seriously.. Over a ten year period she virtually lost her sight, suffered a bilateral amputation and went onto dialysis before suffering a fatal heart attack - all caused by poorly controlled diabetes..

Hello DWizza. My husband was told he was pre diabetic very recently and an appt was booked to see the diabetic nurse. She said that he was just one point over whatever he should be and not to worry about it. She asked about his diet which is mainly vegetarian, his BMI is below 25 and he is very active. I have swapped to brown rice and pasta, otherwise I can't make other changes as we don't touch sugar.

Did you ask what your score is? The computer will have you if you are even 1 point over!

DWizza in reply to Morges

Thanks Morges , that’s encouraging. I dint have the score but by the sound of my doctors reaction it must have been high as she said that I would have had to had put shed loads of weight on … 🤷 she was quite confident that it was a rogue result as I have lost weight and nowhere near the weight she envisaged . I will be having another test to confirm. I will ask for the result. 👍🏻

Hello,

I am borderline for prediabetes too.

My HbA1c level is 41mmol/mol, it has crept up from 36mmol/mol in the last few years.

My BMI is 21, waist measures under 30 inches.

I don't eat any highly processed food. I also cook my food from scratch, including bread.

I make my own kimchi.

I rarely eat puddings or cakes. If I do I reduce the amount of sugar.

I walk 3 or 4 miles a day and go to yoga and Tai Chi classes.

I am at higher risk of developing diabetes because of genetics.

My father was diabetic

I was borderline for gestational diabetes.

I have my blood checked every 4 to 6 months along with my cholesterol blood levels.

If necessary I will be prescribed a different statin.

Hello, DWizza. I was put on the statin drug Atorvastatin 80 mg, in March, 2023, because of Atherosclerosis, caused by hypercholesteroemia. At my annual GP Practice Health Check, my blood test showed that my HBAc1 blood level indicated the possibility of being pre-diabetic. Therefore, he halved the dose of the Atorvastatin, because statins can raise ones blood glucose levels. Nevertheless, when I had a follow up HBCa1 blood test done, 2 months later, the level was almost the same, but my GP decided that that did not mean that I could have any diabetes, and was only because of having a statin. I had a Triple CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass) operation done on the 4th of April, 2023

thank you Vegart, the list of side effects on my new statin includes diabetes ! I wasn’t aware that statins can contribute. I’ve never had high cholesterol , I’ve asked my GP if I should start the new statin ..

6 months ago, I was I was told I was pre-diabetic. Went to a course at Bulwell Riverside. With bad hearing and cataracts, I struggled to follow properly. A large room 30 or more people. But I've Cognisant Impairment, I'm 78, and unable to get about very well. Cartilages Cloe in the left knee, and Carol in the right, along with Arthur Itis in both. I had to give up, the cost and time taking so long to get there and back, in doing my ablutions (two hours each time), Catheter bag leaks, Vasculitis leg bleeds, and and not getting a lot of details sinking in, I stopped going, and just tried to cut down on my food. Last week I found out I was on the verge of diabetes 2. So, will have to get help somehow. The nurse whop informed me was very encouraging, bless her. And will try to see if any smaller groups are available for me. I await her contacting me. I'm about to look at the site on the web now; diabetes.co.uk, that may give clearer advice, if I can read it and get it to sink in.

I feel for any younger people contracting it. I wish you all the bestest in your efforts.

I was diagnosed as just over the Diabetic scale 10 months ago. ( and asked to enroll in program.) But had just had a failed Cardioversion. A fell off the healthy lifestyle wagon 😕. Pulled myself together. Reading back down. In the middle of major weight loss effort. Feeling really good 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

You keep going Mavuk1 that’s fantastic 👊🏻. I’ve got an appointment with my doc on Wednesday, hopefully with a decent 2nd blood test result that confirms her thoughts of a false positive first test. I certainly don’t feel pre diabetic, did a 10k trail run on Saturday , feeling pretty amazing this morning. Not taken a statin for a month .. lots to discuss with my GP…fingers crossed.
