Statins

I had 2 HA in 2021. I have been on the usual medication since. I ended up with severe EF and now have an ICD. Recent blood tests have shown I have a lowered blood platelet. I am booked in with my GP on 15//2 but am concerned what is causing this. I have read it could be Statins. Is there anyone out there with experience of this ?

You are booked in to talk with your GP on 15/2 who will give you their professional assessment of your condition and it will be based on your own personal medical history. We are all unique so the experiences of other people may not be necessarily relevant to you. I hope you find the answers you are seeking.

Hi there, you are right to be concerned as low platelet count is listed as a common potential side effect of statins. Certainly you have a right to address this with your doctor who may suggest a trial without to see if your platelet count goes up again, showing thereby cause and effect. You can always monitor your BP at home meanwhile of course. These are just my thoughts.

Hello, I had done a bit of research and had read it could be statins, I also read that there are alternatives to Atorvastatin which is the brand I am on.

It is important to be our own researcher so we can see our very overloaded/overworked GP's with as much information as we can give them. I find my GP open to my suggestions for my wellbeing which I really appreciate. If the statin is given prophlactically it may be ok to take a break. If you have really high BP without it, then that is another matter. But of course ultimately you are in charge of your own body so hopefully you can discuss all options for the best with your GP. Do update us if you wish when you have a solution to this. I know low platelets is not something I would want in the background. (As far as I know, all statins have the same common side effects).

I will certainly update when I have news as it may be helpful to others.

Hi

Do you mind saying what your platelet count is?

Thank you. It was a coincidence that when I read your post I had just been going though my husband's blood results (he's been having bloods taken pretty much every other week for months now). Most of his bloods are abnormal and have been for some years, but I'd never really given the platelet count much thought. His last reading was 207 so certainly within the normal range, the parameters being 150-410, hopefully 142 isn't considered too abnormal and easily resolved. Good luck 🤞

Hi, it’s just a juggling act isn’t it. I think I may be advised to stop them for a while so we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime keep myself safe. I hope your husband is sorted soon.

It definitely is a juggling act! Yes, it's likely that you'll maybe stop them for a while. My husband has often been taken off or had reduced doses of his meds, sometimes it's permanently others is temporary. Unfortunately there's not much they can do for my husband but thank you anyway.
