statins

I have read most of the posts on statins and thought I would give my story.

I have Left Ventrical systolic dysfunction and left bundle branch block. I am also type 2 diabetic, diet controlled . I have taken 3 statins over time, Simvastatin, artovastatin and rouvastatin all of the have caused my blood glucose to go a bit out of control, my memory suffered so badly,!I lost my job and was in a lot of pain in the legs. Blood sugar got so bad they wanted to put me on diabetic meds which has its own set of side effects. My std cholesterol went down from 6.4 to 5.0 but I suffered and after rouvastatin I had kidney damage.

I stopped the statins and my blood sugar normalised? Kidney damage greatly improved after 3 months and memory improvement was after a year, back to pre statin. The “but” cholesterol has gone back to 6.4. I don’t think this is excessive and maybe my brain just needs more. Anyway, fast forward to end of last year with an angiogram I have mild to moderate CHD so cardiologist suggested Bempodic acid a relatively new drug for people who don’t tolerate statins. I have been on it for 3 weeks, it does not affect my blood sugar, a plus, I do daily checks. My diet is “real food” veggies, meat, chicken, dairy, eggs, avocado. No bread, pasta, rice or potato. No processed food in a packet. I am booked for blood tests in March and if any kidney or liver problems, I will stop taking. I will update in March.

Hello :-)

This sounds a positive you have found an alternative which seems to be working for you :-)

I look forward to your update :-) x

Thanks Sukaya. It only goes to prove that the medical fraternity are not 100% sure about statins, or they wouldn't be looking for alternatives.

If you are up for it, look into the Esselstyn or other ultra-low-fat diets. (10% total calories) It's very, very rigorous, but I can almost guarantee you will lower your cholesterol. (the main reason being you are ingesting zero cholesterol from what you eat). Basically, it's lots of grains, vegetables, fruit. no eggs, dairy or meat. That said, I've tried it and it did lower my cholesterol on top of statins, even.

thank you but I am diabetic so don’t eat grains . I am on a low carbohydrate diet to keep blood sugar in check without meds. I need a little fat for energy so can’t go completely low fat. It’s finding the right balance.

Interesting to hear your experience with a range of statins. My dose of Atorvastatin was halved because of my Achilles Heel problem, but that's still reversing some of the relief from the month when I took none as a test. I can't have anything that affects kidneys, because mine were damaged by an e-coli infection that took months to diagnose.
