good morning you wonderful people.

I was on bisoprolol for a short time after having a heart event and diagnosed with angina, I have now been taken off it for the last 2 week but started to have palpitations went to A&E heart rhythm is fine just pulse up and down. The doctor has now ask me to start taking the tablets again at 1.25mg.

My question is, is the palpitations a side effect of coming off the tablets and should I restart them

Yes because your Doctor has advised you to. Simples🤓🤗

Your doctor may have recommended it simply because you appear to be more stable on it than off it, and after a heart event your chances of another go up considerably -- so it's better to be safe than sorry.

You could ask your doctor for more info on why he recommends it. But if it were me I'd certainly be following his advice in the meantime....

Thank you for your reply it was actually my cardiologist consult that told my GP to take me off them as well as the rest of my meds, apparently I have little to no damage on my heart which is why he wanted me off them but these palpitations are not fun.

In that case I'd circle back to my cardiologist with the results of whatever tests they did in A&E and see what he thinks.

FWIW, 1.25mg is a very low dose. I'm on that as well to settle my heart down a bit after having mitral valve repair and aortic valve replacement. My cardio-thoracic surgeon asked my cardiologist to review that after 6 months.

I know 1.25mg is low but you never get told about side effects when coming off tablets just side effects being on them

The cardiologist is the expert here, ask him/her why not and ask the GP why? I never take any pills until I have had a full discussion with the prescriber about why? what will they achieve? side effects? how do they react with other meds etc? Our bodies are not compartments of things it is a holistic bio chemical machine and things need to be looked at in the round.

Bisoprolol helps to regulate and calm down the heart. This is why your doctor would like you to restart taking the tablets. I'm on this drug too, among others. Follow your doctor's advice to the letter.

Just a tip, ask him about Magnesium supplements. I'm on those too. They've helped me. I've even had magnesium supplements prescribed. You might like to try too but check with your doctor first.

I was on Bisoprolol for 8 weeks. Had an awful time coming off it. Pulse rate sky high with any movement, pulsatile tinnitus, high BP (was always normal before beta blockers), and intense adrenaline surges. I’m 5 months off and still struggling. The heart rate is gradually getting back to normal but the pounding in my ears and anxiety is still there (although not the intense fight or flight). I’ve had bloods, chest x rays and now undergoing head MRI scans to see if there’s a cause for the pulsatile tinnitus. The withdrawal from Biso is savage. Docs tend not to believe it (they say it’s out of your system in 2-3 days). But that’s the problem. The body has stopped being able to deal with adrenaline while on beta blockers.

Take a look on Reddit or patient info and you’ll find so many others with similar beta blocker withdrawal symptoms. I was told I didn’t need them after several ECGs. But stopping them has taken me to hell and back. However, if you have heart issues and they help you it might be wise to stay on them.

Hi, my situation is very similar to yours and I’m on the long journey of withdrawal from a cocktail of drugs including Bisoprolol. You’re right, it’s totally savage. I’m now off all the meds as my heart is clear and I’m only on my usual BP medication and Statins. It’s now 4 weeks from coming off the meds and I’m just not functioning properly at all. Please can you tell me how you are now and if the pulsatile tinnitus eventually settled down? Be grateful for any advice.

I’m 7 months off Biso now and still struggling. The GP thinks it’s left me with POTS. I’d never heard of that before all this. I’m really hoping it’s still just my body settling after betas, as I’ve heard it can take up to a year. Mornings are pretty dire for me. I have to sit up in bed and drink a bottle of water before getting up; otherwise, my HR shoots up (although this is less extreme than it was a few months ago). My HR also goes up more than it should when I move from sitting to standing, especially if sat for a longer period of time. I get a forceful heartbeat/bounding pulse quite often, especially after eating, when moving about and if anything affects my stress levels. My body can’t seem to handle any adrenaline without sending it into overdrive, and it takes much longer than normal to calm down. The pulsatile tinnitus is much quieter, worse when I have the forceful heartbeat. I had a neck and head MRI to check that there was nothing else causing the tinnitus, and thankfully, it came back clear. A 7-day heart monitor showed episodes of sinus tachy and short bursts of SVT, which I didn’t have before stopping betas. An echocardiogram came back normal, so it looks like the withdrawal has messed up my autonomic nervous system, either causing or mimicking POTS. My BP is a little erratic, but mostly now on the normal side.

I feel I’m making small improvements, walking 4-5km each day now (although my HR is higher when exercising than it used to be before betas), and trying some yoga, but it’s very slow progress. The anxiety has lessened, but I still get adrenaline surges from time to time.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling. It really is an awful experience.

Thank you so much for your reply which helped me enormously. Though I’m so sad that you’re still struggling after 7 month and truly hope that everything will gradually ease and you find yourself getting back to normal. I too long for the day when I’m back to recognising myself and enjoy daily life again.

I was on 1.25mg for palps after covid. 3 months later the side effects were such I came off them, my cardiologist said that's fine. No increase in palps but adrenal surges induced anxiety. It settled. Go with medical advice 2 weeks is short... You must follow docs advice with heart issues. Best wishes.

thanks for all the replies guys and girls I spoke to my GP and as the cardiologist wants me off them she has told me to stay off them as long as I have no chest pain etc which I don’t but if the pulpitations get worse take a tablet see if it goes away then don’t take another.

Guess I will update you guys in 4 weeks tell you how it’s going

Good morning,

How are you now? Do hope everything is going well. I’m on the same journey but struggling a bit since coming off all the meds. It would be good to have an update from you.

Yes , I Biso is a lifesaver ,with bad press , I think the makers should change the name, I have been on 10 mg for 17 yrs , I am allergic to so many of the …. PRIL meds and the ACE inhibitors … bravo for Bisoprolol.

Was on Bisoprolol after an event gp lifted dose to double to see if I could handle it, ended up to gp with dizzy spells, very low bp and pulse rate of 20-26 then back to coronary care unit on a glucose drip to flush it out of system bpm and bp eventually calmed down and was sent home after 3 days, cardiologist remark was "I see betablockers and you don't mix" they weaned me off drip and biso, don't take it anymore, feel better now but have been warned any palpitations and phone for an ambulance

so a little update I now feel a little better BP is sort of back to normal and bpm is within normal range palpitations are few and far between but have now got the whole not sleeping properly issue.

Doing cardiac rehab phase 4 once a week as well as doing the BHF level 2 or 3 videos 4-5 times a week as well as going for small walks, food wise I’m eating healthy but it’s costing a fortune.

Hope everyone else is doing a little better as it’s one day at a time and being scared is normal and your not alone.

Thank you so much for your update. I’m trying hard to do all the right things, take the right supplements, magnesium etc, have a walk each day, keep hydrated, do one task each day, ironing, washing, replenishing the bird feeder etc. But it’s hard. Some days are just awful, jittery, adrenaline surges, nausea and others are slightly better. I’m now 25 days off all the heart meds and just take Losartan for my BP. Sleeping is pretty dreadful, wake many times which then sets off tremors. Mornings are definitely the worst but try to at least something useful. You’re right, it’s frightening and you wonder if you’ll ever get back to the person you were before. I guess it just takes time so ever hopeful…………..

I hear you.

I’m not going to lie I have good nights I have bad nights but I’m just taking each day as it comes sleep is the best healer but cardiac rehab is the best thing to try and find.
