my stepson has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, my husband and I are due to go on holiday in ten days time for 7 weeks but now feel that we can not go and leave him, has anyone come across this situation, we have paid a lot of money for the holiday and know there is the possibility that we will loose it, but just wondered before I approach our travel insurance company does anyone know if you can claim for this sort of thing on your travel insurance, any advice would be very helpful

Sorry to hear about your stepson’s diagnosis. I would be checking the small print in your insurance policy as cover between providers differs greatly.

Hello HotPotato, I'm sorry to hear about your stepson. I should think a lot would depend on the relationship with your stepson and also although you say he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, how imminent is this? Your insurance company, even if they do accept cover, will want to know the answer to these two questions. Usual disclaimer, I'm not an expert. I wish you and your stepson all the best x

Firstly let me say how dreadful your news must be for all of your family.

I am sure your insurance company will clarify if your policy will allow you to claim. Alternatively, if you are travelling with a travel company, or via a travel agent, they may allow you to postpone your trip.

Hi HotPotato75

I’m so sorry to hear this sad news for your family.

Depending on how you’ve booked, would it be possible to contact the company and ask to postpone the trip?

Thinking of you all through this difficult time.

Best wishes

Awful news, HP x

When my 94yo mum was hospitalised 13 months ago, and we were told she had days left, my brother was about to go on holiday. He was able to claim a full refund. Give your insurance company a call.

My sympathies for your family at this time. All insurance companies differ slightly, so it is important that you read your insurance policy carefully to find out whether the cancellation policy covers your personal situation. If it is not clear, then contact them directly for clarification. I hope you can get the matter resolved quickly.

just call the company and ask them - a call won't affect your policy and will help you with whatever decision you need to make

We were refunded holiday costs when my wife's father passed away. Not quite the same but worth trying. Sorry to hear about your heartbreaking news.🙏
