Cheap Travel Insurance for people with heart conditions from the UK

Nomorechocolate23 profile image

Hi guys!

I've had a heart attack and a stent just over 6 weeks ago . One of my sisters might treat me to a holiday . So I am looking into travel insurance from the UK that is world wide and includes North America . I've looked at the Travel Insurance companies on this site but their quotes are very high. I do have other illnesses but obviously the heart one is the most expensive to insure .

Does anyone know of any Travel Insurance companies that don't charge a fortune to insure people with heart conditions?

I'd really appreciate your help!

My husband had a triple bypass and I have a few health conditions. We use Insurance With - I could only get a single trip one but my husband got an annual one worldwide with no problem. Their first questions are about your medication, so different from most companies.

Thank you very much. I will try them !

Worldwide cover especially north America is always gonna be expensive. Did you try All Clear, they're usually quite reasonable

I did try 'All Clear ' . They said they couldn't take me . Thanks for the suggestion .

I use Staysure.

As Lezzers said going to North America is costly.

I got an eye watering quote of £700 to insure me on a single trip to the US and Canada which can only be for a limited time.

I can't get worldwide year long cover.

Thanks I'll try them. The US has the most expensive medical treatments in the world. I'm trying to persuade my sisters to go to Europe instead but they won't budge . £700 is a lot for insurance . Saga quoted me £670 so almost £700 too ! Gosh , I didn't know it was so expensive to have a heart attack ! Lol !

I've got worldwide cover but excluding USA. If you want cover to include the US it will become expensive

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes , so I wish my sisters would agree to going outside the US. But even some places like the Carribean the US is included in the cover .

If it is cheap read the T's & C's very carefully. Quotes are usually cheap for a reason!

Very true, it's a false encomy!!

You are so very right ! I didn't think of that . Thanks !

I would also wait as long as possible before obtaining cover as the insurers I checked out got cheaper the further away from my heart attack it got. 6 weeks is a bit early in my view.

Okay , will do that . Thanks that's great advice. 6 weeks to early for insurance purposes ? We / My sisters were thinking of travelling in August.

Perhaps it would be cheaper to buy single trip for each journey, you could then split the North America trip away from the others. The cheapest single trip I've found is All Clear but it excludes USA.

Hi ! It's only a single trip. I think that I phrased my question wrongly. Yea All Clear wouldn't take me .

The Women's institute have a scheme for their members and their partners under the age of 74 which may be worth a look. Goodtogo is also worth a look. European cover is usually quite reasonable - while we are covered by the EHIC card and most of the worlds best health care systems are in Europe.

As all the others have said, Insurance companies regard America as a major money pit. The other question that seems to be increasingly being asked is 'Are you going on a cruise'?

It is also worth making sure that both of you are on the same policy. I watched a man being evacuated off a cruise ship by an American helicopter somewhere south of Yemen. He had full medical cover and off he went. His wife had a separate cheaper policy. She had to stay on the ship until the next port of call.

I'm not a member of the Womens Institute . But I can still see if they have any suggestions.

I'll try Goodtogo . Thanks!

I'm trying to get my sisters to go to Europe instead . But to no avail , as of yet ! ( The sister who has offered me a holiday is not even coming on the trip)

I've read that insurance cover for Cruise Ship travel is very , very expensive , thousands of pounds. That's because of the cost of being evacuated to another country , like the man you watched. It must have been horrendous for him and his wife.

I'm not married nor do I have a partner. If I suddenly fell ill (G-D forbid!) my sisters would not cut their holiday short , so the cover for another person doesn't apply to me .

Thanks, it's very kind of you to point it out though.

Thanks very much for all your help! I will definitely try the companies you suggested.

I’ve got worldwide travel insurance with my bank account. I called them up after my heart attack and stents and they couldn’t insure me but told me to ring back after 6-10 weeks following the HA. I did and I’m now all covered no problem.

Okay thanks ! Great idea! And maybe Post Office too? Will leave it for a few weeks. Another member from this site suggested that too. Thanks again!

There is one that's currently advertising on TV. Sorry can't remember name but I'll want cover too.

Best deal I found, was with Unite the trade union it was half the price of stay sure even with the stay sure discount codes, it sure pays to shop around, I have also heard of claims not being fully paid out or even paid with stay sure. So just be careful and do your home work. The main thing is to not miss out any previous medical issues or treatments as that's were they catch you out, for not declaring everything when you sign up.

Nomorechocolate23 profile image
Nomorechocolate23 in reply toMike424u

Thanks Mike424u , for your great advice . I'll definitely not go for Stay Sure . I'll try the one you mentioned .

I've written out my medical illnesses. But now after what you've said I'm going to be double thorough .

I don't want to be in that situation where I'm not covered. I called 'Insure and Go' and the girl quickly went through the main usual questions but did not give me time to tell her my other health issues !

Thanks again!

Hi...a quick question if you dont mind..like the idea of using a union..I am member of another union but would consider this one too.

Searching for travel insurance and see Unite use All Clear Insurance. Just wondering if being a Unite member offers better rates than going direct with All Clear?

Thanks

I guess it doesn't really matter who you end up going with as long as you declare every illness and condition, as that is their get out clause, just list everything and every med you take, so that nothing is missed out.

I always try medicaltravelcompared.com, you are given a few of their cheapest quotes. A bit like compare the market.com. USA travel insurance is always more expensive, incuding the likes of Jamaica etc, as they fall under the same category.

Good luck. ⛱

Hi Nomorechocolate23,

My husband had a slight heart attack and a stent fitted. Due to this our holiday insurance though our account at Nationwide was cancelled for him!!!

We have purchased his insurance through Get going insurance.co.uk.

Great reviews and excellent prices.

We have just purchased 2 weeks world wide cover including USA, for our Florida holiday in September for him for £114.

Good luck

On the back of your message ...does anyone know where I might find a list of recommended minimum cover when looking for travel insurance?

Nomorechocolate23......how did you get on?

Mike424u profile image
Mike424u

unite the union travel insurance is underwritten by TRAVEL INSURANCE FACILLITIES PLc

Tifgroup

I paid the additional premium to cover my heart treatment and stents and meds which was £34 to cover me for the additional excess of £600 for my disclosed medical condition.

world wide cover and 45days per trip. I could not find a cheaper quality product.
