Morning all.I banged my shin last week ,slipped getting into the bath.My question is I've got a very large bruise at leastv6 inches long down my shin .I'm on Apixaban twice a day and of course I know this makes you bruise easily. It doesn't appear to be looking any better and is quite tender to touch.Im a bit of a worrier and wondered if anyone on here has had a large shin bruise and did you get it looked at by a health practitioner?

Bruises
Bruises are part of life for now, I’m on dual platelet treatment with Ticagrelor (Brilique) and aspirin.
Generally they aren’t sore but they can be massive and can take ages to disperse/heal, far longer than before.
I can still see traces of some of the bruises from my operations which were 6 months ago. Those from general bumps can take up to a month or more to fade. Quite often I have no idea how I’ve come by them. I also can get bruises on the bruises.
I’ve got four at the moment with no idea of how they happened, one on my leg 4” long, one on my chest, one on my arm and the latest, on my eyelid possibly from rubbing my eye.
I’ve not bothered getting them looked at as they have slowly healed, just not as quickly as they used to.
as survivor says - part of life’s rich pattern!
You could try arnica cream I find that does help
An unfortunate consequence of taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication is that you bruise far more easily. And if you cut yourself it is more difficult to stop the bleeding. You just have to shrug your shoulders and put up with it 😂
l think it good that the bruise has come out. If you had bumped your head then that would have been worrying. Arnica cream or ask the chemist pharmacist. It may take a while to fade being on blood thinner. I can understand your worry as bruises while on blood thinners can look very bad.
The same for me as with all the answers you’ve had.
Morning Ethel . I can tell you I fell off a step ladder in my bedroom whilst trying to hang curtains and did a twirl to avoid the floor but ended up hitting my shin on the bed frame. That was four months ago and the bruise a biggen is still there and tender to touch. I take Clopidrogel. I saw my GP two weeks ago regarding blood pressure medication and asked him to have a look at it. This was his response 'I don't know why could be a small haematoma under the bruising ', and that was it. I have accepted his opinion and like many other people on here with similar problems am putting it down to the Clopidrogel.Hope the pain eases soon, try not to worry.
Since HA 2 years ago, and since taking the exotic cocktail of blood thinners/ beta blockers/ stations etc I now have a certain understanding of how peaches (and other soft fruit) feels at Sainsbury's........ other supermarkets are available! Sad to say they hang around for ages, and I seem to collect more before the original ones show any signs of going away.I keep telling myself that shades of black, blue, purple, yellow , red etc are the latest fashion and are cheaper that tattoos!
Totally normal; I bruise at the slightest touch. I found 3 more this morning; no idea how I got them. I'm only on aspirin. I've also found that my skin has thinned terribly and often instead of just a bruise,t he skin actually rips of. Try arnica cream. After my first angiogram I had a black bruise from wrist to elbow that took over a month to go. They released the pressure bandage too early. Arnica cleared it up.
I am on apixaban and have had a similar problem twice. The first time I ended up in A&E (after a few days) because it had become entremely painful first thing in the morning. It was explained to me that the `gravitational' bruising was to be expected. The x-ray looked OK, but I was referred for an MRI as there was a slight chance of an underlying bone condition that might need surgery. The MRI was clear. The brusing disappeared after a couple of weeks, but the now painless lump took several months to go. The second occasion it was my forehead! That was more than 3 months ago, and the bump was the size of a hen's egg, with unsightly brusing that spread down half my face. Again the bruising cleared after a couple of weeks and the bump is now smaller than a quail's egg -h oping it has gone by Christmas!
the skin on shins is often fragile and poorly protected - the circulation there can be poor and this makes it an are which heals poorly when damaged - if you are conerned you should ty to get your shin examined by a gp or practice nurse, if possible one with experience of wound care (even if the surface is intact) i do'nt want to scarce you but these injuries can break down and cause lesions which can be tricky to heal, so please protect it and consider wering clothes which protect your shins in future
Thankyou all for your comments.I have a nurse appointment Tues and will see what she thinks.
