Hi I am on warfarin after a aortic valve & root replacement. I am always covered in bruises, which I am really embarrassed about especially in the hot weather when my arms and legs are uncovered. My INR is usually 2.5. Is this just something I have to put up with?

Hi Tilly

Have you spoken to your anticoagulation clinic nurses? That would be my first port of call. If they can’t help try your GP or your cardiologist. It may just be that you are susceptible to bruising but is worth getting it checked out.

Hi, unfotunately, this condition seems to be accepted as the norm because of the anticoag meds. I have been prescribed with Xarelto to replace the Warfarin and the condition in my case is not that severe. Good luck.

Hi Unfortunately I have to stay on warfarin as I've a mechanical aortic valve, so I will just have to get used to it I suppose

I have had bruises after a valve repair and replacement.

I've been on Warfarin for 6 years after multiple pulmonary embolisms and bruising has been par for the course. There isn't a part of my body that I haven't had bruising on and they seem to have picked up momentum during this hot weather. After six years of it I don't give them a second thought now :)

Hi how often do you get your INR blood tests done ? Bruising is quite common when on Warfarin, however of course if you get any massive bruising then you need to be getting seen by medical professional !

Hi tilly1109,

Warfarin and other blood thinners work by inhibiting the normal clotting cascade and decrease the body's ability to form clots. Many patients on Warfarin experience easy bruising due to minor leakage of blood from the smallest vessels (i.e. capillaries), which may occur spontaneously or with very minimal trauma. Usually these bruises are insignificant, and the body can reabsorb these tiny bleeds on its own without additional support; however as the appearance of these are causing you concern I would discuss it with your doctor.

Take care,

Emily
