Has anyone experienced weight loss since discontinuing bisoprolol/beta blockers? Has your metabolism gone back to normal? Many thanks

I wish I had lost weight lol. I was only on bisoprolol for a few weeks and stopped as they made my nocturia worse and gave me terrible nightmares where I shouted out loud so I wasn’t sleeping properly and nor was my family! I felt fine when I stopped but I was only on 1.25mg.

Me too! I'm sorry to hear that, I am pleased to hear you are off them and (hopefully) sleeping better now. When I was taking them recently, all I wanted to do was sleep!

Thanks. I do sleep a bit better now but I do have sleeping tablets for when I can’t cope with lack of sleep anymore lol. When I first took them I was tired all the time and was sleeping on the sofa in the afternoons!

I piled so much weight on with Bisoprolol as I felt so drugged I could hardly function on them and stopped going out. I slept so much all the time so the lack of exercise really caught up with me. Once I came off them and cleared my head I started living again and weight dropped off. Its best to ask advice on changing your meds if youre not happy with them as we all react differently to different sorts. Its trial and error to find one that suits you best but Bisoprolol seems to be the standard starting point.

I hope you find a healthy option and, having put weight on again with various beta blockers, I'd definitely say that losing weight is better for your heart than putting too much on! All the best.

Thanks for your reply! I was on them for 5-6 weeks and gained a huge amount of weight, on top of that my legs were so swollen and painful. I also had trouble with lack of energy, I'd be up for about 2 hours doing things and after that I needed to go back to bed - I am glad I am off of them now! I am pleased to hear you're living life again and the weight soon dropped off, how long did that take roughly? Thankfully my doctor was very understanding when I said I wanted to come off of them, they were mainly prescribed as a precaution while I await my heart surgery which should be in about 6 months time. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you PinkSVT. It all sounds so familiar, swollen feet and ankles plus the absolutely draining tiredness were classic symptoms on bisoprolol. Yet a friend takes them and has had no problems with it. Ive never shifted all the weight I put on but I put that down to the lack of exercise now. Ive continued to have less energy and could sleep for an Olympic gold medal but now off the bisoprolol I dont have the brain fog and draining exhaustion any more. I get so tired and have a rest day after Ive been out anywhere, amd befpre any fu day out I rest amd get plenty of sleep. Its frustrating thst I cant do things I used to but just had to learn to pace myself so I dont have any bad mishaps that put me in hospital. I often wonder if Id be much better without meds but Im scared to try! The last time I was in hospital, the consultant said theres only one way to find out... when I asked my own consultant she was not happy about me trying a spell without them. I still wonder if my metabolism would kick im again if I stopped my meds but Im scared to find out in case I end up in hospital after another defibrillator shock!

I’ve been on them about 4 months now and gained over a stone, I questioned the nurse about my weight gain and they told me that they don’t contribute to weight gain..but I’m going to mention it again at my review.

No, my weight stayed the same.

If you don't mind me asking how have you been since coming off bisoprolol? I know this post was from 6 months ago.I to was also put on bisoprolol for 2 weeks after taking propranolol for 7 weeks prior (didn't suit me)

My GP has said because I was taking such a small dose 2.5mg of bisoprolol that it wouldn't be a problem stopping them anyways as after it was only to help my eptopic beats I find these come and go and more when I'm anxious.

I had really bad sleep with bisoprolol after only being on it for not even a full 2 week but everything else was fine. How long did you take you to ween off? And for your sleep to get better? How are you coping knowing you have heart surgery was this why you was told to have beta blockers? Thanks
