I'm waiting for a CABG. How did yours go mate? Any tips?
Hi Steve, I had Nstemi and quadruple bypass last July aged 61. Was fit as … except for the heart attack 🤦🏼🤣.. We all obviously feel anxious prior to the surgery , waiting is the worst bit. I was lucky to have great ward mates and 2 postponements of my op , was disappointed initially but it worked in my favour as I was able to see others go through their full process of surgery and discharged to home in 5 days. Coming out of surgery is bizarre, thought I was on a spaceship 🤦🏼.. drugged to eyeballs . They get you out of bed to sit in a chair , a day or 2 in ICU then moved to HDU . I struggled a bit for a day or two with the swelling in my legs from harvesting arteries/veins , they stung. They get you to cough , holding rolled up towel to your sternum ( a teddy) . I think the fentanyl was wearing off by then and I felt a bit nauseous. Moved back onto the cardiac ward and encouraged to get up and walk , wash etc . Discharged home in 5. The physios further encourage you to walk , I was doing 5k within 4-5 weeks. Keep arms in a virtual tube to lift things , don’t stretch to lift anything , sign up to cardio rehab program. Get you meds sorted , I’m on my 3rd statin (had issues) , got my bisoprolol reduced too,. Get your nutrition on point . You’ve got one job to do , keep the new plumbing clear . 9 months post surgery and I’m doing bloody well. Went back to 5k running , riding my motorcycle, twice weekly strenuous yoga classes and working round my small holding. Enjoying a beer or two on special occasions, like today as it my 62nd birthday . I don’t mind my scars , they remind me of my rebirth. There are mental aspects that might not heal as quickly and are not visible. I felt that I had let everyone down, I wept like a baby a couple of times while on hospital. I think I had PTSD too, I couldn’t stand loud noises or any sort of violence on tv . Recovery isn’t linear either , ups & downs , fatigue from the body recovering, the anaesthetic leaving your body , the combination of meds .. I hated it when people said “Take it easy”.. you find your level . Wishing you a successful and comfortable procedure and rehab.
Hi PurpleEdge
Thank you!
That's so reassuring. Knowing that you had a 'good' operation and that the recovery process was completed so quickly is great to hear. Brilliant.
Thanks again mate.
I'm 'almost' looking forward to it now!!
