hi there 13 weeks ago i had a like an angina attack my blood pressure was up in the 200s and i was taken to hospital given a GTN what brought down my blood pressure i had an ECG blood tests and x ray and said the could not find anything wrong and gave me acid reflux tablets and sent me home that week i was really ill and ended up back in chest pains and blood pressure 188 and above this time i got told to start taking a GTN spray 2.5 Ramipril as they think i have angina as well. the new drugs where working for a couple of weeks but still had chest pains out of breath etc then it happened again i was back in hospital told to take 5mg Ramipril i was getting better with higher dosage but still had chest pains etc i was told i need to go for tests which is crazy on waiting times but i have noticed i am getting better every week but still now and again i get chest pain specially now its getting cold the cold air hurts some times . does the ramipril help with angina?? but I'm scared if i try doing my normal jobs again i will end up back in hospital. i am not 100% sure why i get symptoms of angina but now feeling better please can some one give advise as i think the NHS don't know what they are doing any more and i feel I'm going round in circles please help

You might not think the NHS ' don't know what they are doing any more' but it is in fact manned by health professionals at the sharp end who do their job, sometimes very specialised, day in day out, and in the main know far more about practising medicine than the vast majority of people on here who only have their own experience of heart related matters with which to relate to and are not qualified to offer medical advice and opinions. Nonetheless you are entitled to feel frustrated that your condition has not yet been fully diagnosed, and the time it is taking, but you can only do what you are doing by going back to them should you become ill again, in conjunction with waiting for your tests, although it is good to hear you believe you are improving. In the meantime you could have a chat with the BHF Heart Helpline nurse who might be able to provide an opinion on what is wrong with you and offer some comfort and advice

Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor primarily used to treat high blood pressure, but it's also used for angina (particularly in patients with high blood pressure).

Even though your meds are helping, your medical team will still want to find out exactly what the cause is, which can help you manage it in future. Thus the need for further tests. Some of those, like echos and stress ECGs, are non-invasive and not much of a bother. Even a CT angiogram is pretty minimally-invasive. But yeah, the waiting can still be stressful.

Did they give you any activity restrictions on your discharge? If not, you could call your cardiologist and ask, or the BHF nurse helpline might be able to provide guidance.

There are different causes for angina, the medication you are taking treat the symptoms but probably not the cause - the doctors might be able to offer more effective treatment if they knew what is causing your angina, so they would like you to have tests to find out

I hope you get answers and more helpful treatment soon

Hang in there. The stress does go down as you learn to live with your condition.

I was diagnosed with degenerative valve disease 20 years ago. Told I would need open heart surgery at some point. I had a yearly echo for the following 20 years, with some MRIs sprinkled in between, before things got bad enough for surgery. I was a ball of nerves for the first couple of echos; by the end they were like going for a teeth cleaning.

Good advice in the replies.I would only add you must find ways to reduce your anxiety as it doesn't help.

Only do as much physical activities as to not incur discomfort.

And always ask questions.
