Heatwaves struggles πŸ₯΅πŸ₯Ά

Well I think we hearties more or less struggle with hot weather! πŸ‘I am terribly uncomfortable in this heat and trying to keep out the sun come 11 am ! Until 16 pm I stay in the house or shade! But yesterday I found this heat unbearable, even with my fan on and light clothing, cotton t-shirt and shorts!

Even when I was working I found heatwaves extremely unpleasant after my heart attack 2019

How does everyone cope with this heat please ❓

I've never been able to cope well with the heat, Snowdrop, and even less so now post HA & 3xCABG. If I'm out in the garden I always wear a light hat and always have water to hand to keep hydrated. Summer's probably the only time of year I remember to keep ice-cubes in the freezer for drinks. Light, loose clothes seem to work well and I dump the duvet and just use a sheet or very light cover at bedtime. I don't find fans in the house very helpful as they just seem to shift the warm air about, but I keep a little hand-held battery fan nearby for my face. Carol

Food for thoughts here, thanks Carol! For now it is cooler here but I think if the sun comes out in full force, it could be warm again πŸ₯΅πŸ€”You might be right with my ceiling fan, but my bedroom suffered the full force of the sun after 2pm and it's absolutely sweltering πŸ™„

I wished my bedroom would be on the Westside that would be more bearable in the evenings as well!

I made a 1.5 litre bottle of Squash and keep it in the fridge! I have cool showers as well and all sorts!

Before my heart attack I could cope with the heat much easier, but now I am trying slowly to get used to it !

But shade is better Carol πŸ‘πŸ˜‚

The sun shines onto the back of my house from early morning, Snowdrops, then moves over the top to the front by mid-afternoon. I've started closing all the curtains at the front in the afternoon to try and keep it at bay. It's worked a little bit, but it's just still too warm! The first thing I've been doing every morning when I come downstairs is opening the back door - the only downside to that is that the late wasps are seeing it as an invitation into the kitchen - we can't win 🌞 The little hand-held battery fan works to cool me down (for all of 2 minutes!) if I soak my face first! πŸ€ͺ😁

I’m Italian and we keep the shutters or curtains slightly closed during the day to avoid the sun coming in and making the exposed rooms even warmer.

We reopen when it’s cooler before going to sleep.

Hello :-)

I have not coped at all with it in fact last night was so hot I could have cried

But while it has been like this I have done very little just mostly took it easy keeping the house as cool as I can which as been near impossible and myself as cool as I can again just about impossible I have noticed how the heat has affected me physically it has been unbearable

Good news is for most places over the next couple of days we are going to get rain and by Tuesday should be back to lower temperatures that we are used to so just take it easy and soon this heat wave will have passed :-) x

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toBeKind28-

I did this midmornings BeKind28I aired all the rooms but then closed my curtains in my living, bedroom and hallway landing! They recommend to shut the windows as well to keep the hot air out πŸ‘ But I have a telephone socket in the corner of my bedroom window and that will get too hot if I close that window!

But must admit I could not stand 35-40Β°C any more unless it's by the sea with a brise going and I would have to have shade!

We are not used to extreme heat in the UK but when we have a heatwave we find it hard to adjust especially if we have health issues πŸ‘ŒπŸ₯°

Hello :-)

Well you are doing all you can to stay cool and in the next couple of days hopefully we will all feel better as it will be cooler

I agree though people with health issues have been struggling so much more and we are not used to it and we mostly have carpets as well as loft insulation to keep our houses warm yet abroad where they are used to the heat and do not have cold windows they marble kind of floors their houses are made more for the heat so I do not think it helps that ours are set up more for the cold and makes it harder then to get them cool in these heat waves

A sea breeze would be lovely though :-) x

Hi Snowdrops, it’s the humidity that’s getting to me as much as the heat. It makes me feel like I’m struggling for air at night.

The best thing I’ve found for staying cool is a narrow silk scarf soaked in cold water and wrapped around back of neck, You can buy gel filled things for the same purpose but they don’t feel so good. Don’t be afraid of getting clothes a bit wet! I got myself around a heatwave in France this way, stopping by public fountains to re-soak the scarf every couple of hours!

What a brilliant idea, thank you so much Rainfern! Will see if I can get a silk scarf in any secondhand shop for next time πŸ’•πŸ™

It does help to have real silk as it absorbs and holds water better. I’m lucky I have a special one my sister gave me. Try Etsy?

Thing is Etsy is expensive expensive Rainfern πŸ€” Well I ask for a silk scarf from Etsy for Christmas fir next year πŸ‘πŸ˜‚

But it's also amazing what you can find In good second hand shops!

Anyway your sister must have had 7 th sense that you will need that scarf in hot weather πŸ˜πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ŒπŸ₯°

Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toYumz199725

I would not use my oven in the heat, nio chance Yumz, I use the microwave a lot and have salads πŸ‘ŒBut I close my curtains or if you have blinds close them, and leave Windows open to get the air flowing at least!

Rainfern in here recommended a silk scarf dipped in cold water to help cool us down!πŸ₯° I am sorry to hear you are so struggling in this heat πŸ‘ŒπŸ«‚

Wish we had air conditioning. It was 30 degrees where I live, yesterday, but I cooked a beef joint in my slow cooker, put roast potatoes and parsnips in my air fryer oven and microwaved the vegetables. Hardly any heat in the kitchen and more economical. By the time you’ve heated the big oven up for 20mins, they’ve nearly cooked in the air fryer oven. Love the way the slow cooker makes meat really tender, so you can use the cheaper joints.I recommend the air fryer oven, as it holds more than the drawer air fryer.

Even cold flannels will do the trick please! Around your neck, etc and rinsing your hands + feet under cold water or a cold foot bath could help you, right β“πŸ˜‰

my house is very old with low ceilings even in the modern extension bit, my kitchen and dining room have tiled floors which I stand barefoot on from time to time but when I can't stand anymore in day I sometimes go in car with aircon on and find a cool cafe to rest in

it's just started to rain hooray lol

I dream of living by the sea as that's where I was born x

My brother and his wife called for me on Friday around 6pm and we went for a drive through local hills ending up at the beach. He & I went for a paddle - it was like heaven! - his lovely wife practically had to drag both of us out of the water when it was time to leave! 😁

Oh that sounds like fun Cee-Cee πŸŠπŸš£πŸŠπŸ€½πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ πŸ₯°Bet it was just nice to cool off for a while! I remember Friday was warm too, but Saturday was just a strange stinging heat and very humid too! Wished I had been there as well Cee-Cee πŸ₯°

Cee-Cee1 profile image
Cee-Cee1β€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

It really was, Snowdrops - I wish I was there again today! It's probably really crowded though, we didn't get there until around 7pm on Friday so it wasn't too bad, although it was lovely to see plenty of people still there paddle boarding and swimming & stuff. There was a little freshwater stream running into the sea that I dipped my feet into to wash the sand off - it was colder than the sea! 🧊 The warm breeze coming off the sea really helped with the humidity which was great. 😊

It's much easier to warm up than cool down.

If the heat affects you, there's luke warm showers and baths. As water evaporates, it sucks heat out of whatever it's on, so a fine spray of water on your skin will help.

Cold drinks cool you down internally.

If the air is humid, as you sweat, less is going to evaporate.

Don't open widows on the south side, especially if they are in brick or tiles. That just lets even hotter air in.

Open doors and windows on the north side, low down where the cooler air is.

Good insulation helps as it keeps heat entering and escaping from the house.

I keep temperature readings and right now we are at least 4-degrees above the same dates last year.

At some point, temperatures will return to normal and we will feel the difference. Last year, 12th December was particularly cold. My windscreen washers froze up and the mean MOT man failed my vehicle.

I loved all your answers here, fantastic advise and ideas how to keep cool in Heatwaves at home or abroad on holidays! Thank you so much for all your answers πŸ‘πŸ₯°Germany, where my siblings and my dad lives it's very hot too right now, further South it's even hotter where my youngest brother lives!

So πŸ˜πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‚ I think I stick with occasional Heatwaves in the UK πŸ‘

Stay cool, hydrated and look after your health please all πŸ‘πŸ₯°πŸ™

I have a neck fan operated by charging it like a phone, got it last year from Amazon and I love it. It really does help. I also get a wet, cold face cloth and put that on my chest or shoulder when I’m in bed as it really cools me down. I’m so lucky as since Monday I’ve been in Devon where it’s not so hot and we have the sea breeze as we’re only a minute away from the beach. Back home tomorrow and the weather will be cooler then, yippee.

Oh i hear you! Heat has def been a struggle. I work in the laundry in a nursing home and i've got two big fans and a portable neck fan goimg and still struggling. Totally drained. Bring on the cooler weather then we can complain we're too cold and are hands/feet are like ice lolJules x

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toJules2021

I have done the same 14 years ago Jules but I had to change jobs because of personal circumstances, nothing to do with health, just better money! πŸ₯° Laundry work in care homes, tumble dryers and the iron going warms the laundry rooms plus this heat 😁πŸ₯΅ I can imagine it isn't easy to cope with!

Well they recommend drinking fluids to hydrate yourself! If I don't drink enough I admit I feel a lot warmer then if I do drink my sugar free diluted Squash juice or cooled fruit tea πŸ‘Œ It must have been manic in your laundry working through the Covid Pandemics, face mask and apron and gloves all of the time 😳

Hat off for you keeping this virus at bay in your laundry Jules! It must have been really hard! πŸ‘ŒπŸ₯°β™₯️

Same advice. Windows closed, curtains drawn, fan on but….. it’s a good time to test yr central heating if yr house is hot. I feel 25 degrees is hot enough for my radiators in winter if it’s really cold out si wack the heating up to 25, check it all works. It’s not going to make the house any hotter! You’ll get a workman out quicker in this heat to fix heating than mid winter. I’m not doing brill in this heat but my poor old dogs are suffering which is my main concern bless em 🦊x

If this is how it's going to be I'm going to have to get air conditioning but the electric bill scares me. I have windows open and curtains/ blinds closed b ut the setting sun is on my bedroom so it's like an oven. I di read advice that you should point fans out of yoru window to take the hot air out of the room. Makes sense but I haven't tried it because of the curtains.

`It'st he humidity that's the problem. Years ago I went with American friends to California. They insisted on spending the day on LOng Beach. I was really scared because I 've never tolerated heat but I spent a fantastic day on the beach and in an out of the sea. It was a dry heat, totally different to here. The same when I Lived in Germany; low humidity in summer and even in winter we had dry crunchy snow that never turned to ice. So how do we reduce the humidity here? Maybe a dehumdifier would be better than air conditioning

I expect everyone was so relieved when the rain came and the temperature dropped, I know I was, unfortunately went out for a long walk with my BF and think he may now be my ex !! the heat got to me and I blew my top at him, anyway, I find just staying in ,and operating the Mediterranean way works for me, inside between 11am and 3pm, have a siesta. Close all the curtains so the heat doesnt race in too and then open at night to let the cool air(if there is any to flood in) I never have dealt with heat well all my life (late father was the same) so since my mitral repair and an over active thyroid I stand no chance lol. Have found a de humidifier has worked in the past and a good fan too.Good thing is I dont feel the cold so roll on winter x

Totally bliss, started raining properly later in the afternoon yesterday until this early afternoon πŸ‘ It has definitely cooled the air altogether now! I do hope that if anyone living further South had rain or will get rain too soon!

I am glad I don't live in London as the heat there would have been unbearable for me!

When I was young I studied in Stuttgart and we had temperatures like this most summers!

I think when you have heart problems or had a heart attack and in the years afterwards you might less cope with the heat altogether!

But we are all different and it may also depends where you live and what you are used to temperature wise! But I would dread living in the Mediterranean or Asia and US where temperatures hit the roof 😱

Think we are lucky living in the UK πŸ’•πŸ‘

Lovely 😍 πŸ˜‚ it's raining cats and dogs we say up here in North Yorkshire 🌨️🌧️🌨️ As long as it doesn't cause flooding I am happy! πŸ‘ Flooding causes so much misery because it runs straight of the dry soil πŸ‘Œ which we have seen on the news!

But I really believe the imbalance of climate is caused by reducing rainforests πŸ‘

When I moved to the UK 1993 we still had decent summers and winters compared to now!

I feel seasons are so unpredictable now πŸ‘Œ

But I am so glad that farmers had a good week if warm sunshine so they could get their hey and silage in for their animals! πŸ˜ƒ
