Hi - l am twelve weeks post 5 x bypass and just been for my surgeons appointment where he was very pleased with my progress and has discharged me to my GP and the cardiovascular rehab team.
I am currently really struggling with the current heat wave with fatigue and weakness- whereas before my heart attack I had no problems with the hot temperatures and quite enjoyed sitting in the sun and listening to music.
Anyone else suffering in the heat this way?

Yes I’ve bought blackout blinds for the living room and kitchen for when the sun is out, a Dyson fan for the living room and a small fan for the bedside table. I stand in a bowl of cool water for 5 minutes before going to bed and keep a cool pack in the fridge to place on my head when I’m in bed. Stay cool for now. It won’t last for ever. The rains are forecast from Tuesday. 🥶 then we’ll be back to normal for UK. 😂
Keep your home locked down. Curtains drawn, blinds down, windows closed. I use a constant supply of wet flannels and drape them around my neck. Cool showers are another way - just short ones do the trick. Invest in a portable cooler/air conditioner, they come small and reasonably priced these days.
Should you be concerned that perhaps the medication you are taking post op may be a/the cause please do speak with your cardiovascular nurse as soon as you can as they are very knowledgeable about these matters. Stay Safe
Yes I am fine after bypass - 8 months- and fit but no way would I sit in the sun with the temperatures we are having now even if I didn’t have a bypass. The air is so oppressive and I was told to avoid extreme heat after bypass
My husband is now 2 years 5 x bypass. He finds extreme heat and cold difficult. It doesn’t stop him going out in it but he needs to be aware of his body and act accordingly.
Hi Spirite, many of us are feeling it - maybe because when the temperature goes up, the heart works harder. An expedition doctor told me that heat makes blood vessels near skin open up, which increases the space in which the existing amount of blood is circulating. The heart has to work harder to pump blood in the bigger space, my heart rate goes up 10-15bpm in heat. It’s like a mini workout for the heart. If we also get dehydrated (not just sweat, also more vapour lost by exhaling in the heat) then it is a double whammy, as the blood vessel space is bigger and now the volume of blood fluid is smaller, too. Drink lots, stay cool, or take plenty of indoor cooling breaks (I do 10 mins outside max in an hour) and best of luck with your recovery.
