It’s been abit warm up here in West Yorkshire too.πŸ”₯😎 don’t worry though because it won’t be long before we are slipping and sliding around on ice and slush, Not to mention the dark miserable depressing days with low light levels and plenty of rain. Me too, Waterlooville. Grey and cloudy but still warm and humid. I do what the Mediterraneans do - shut the curtains on the side the sun is coming from, it keeps the room much cooler.

Hello :-)

Strange you did this post just now as I am sat here struggling to and feeling his is the worst day ever even though no direct sun the air is so heavy and humid that it is affecting my breathing and then that affects my anxiety and so on

I even had to take my blue inhaler today which I usually don't have to take that one and can't notice it has made a difference

Sorry you are struggling to I keep looking at the weather here by Tuesday it should be back to normal I hope they have got it right for once and hopefully it will be the same where you are as I think for quite a few of us with heart issues this weather has been really hard for us to cope with

Glad you go a nice dinner and your Mum is a good one cooking in this heat I would have passed out

Husband cooked ours or we would have not had any :-) x

Yeah I try to elevate my legs all the time because I really notice when I dont my legs and feet swell alot. Yeah specially round Jan - Feb time I get ill with my chest so it's not a great time x how bad is your asthma?? X

You did really well having your family round today in this heat but worth it and maybe you can do it again when the weather will be cooler :-)

Your heart will have been jumping around but you can relax now and try and stay cool this evening

I would say my asthma is normal just common asthma best way I can describe it but heat like we are having and of it is really cold and of course anxiety can trigger mine of to

it’s hard going at times. I was out on Saturday at a Traction Engine Rally and about 3 hours in the sun was enough for me. It was so nice to find shade by a hedge.

I’m finding that my left ankle, the leg my graft was taken from, still swells slightly when it is hot, that’s three months after the procedure. I understand it does sometimes happen but isn’t common.

The worst I find is in the evenings and also at night. We’ve got a large floor fan in the bedroom, it never used to go higher than 1 in the past, last night it was on 2 all night. Today has been better.

My exercise walks (2 miles in just over 30 minutes) are the worst thing, I get home and can wring out my clothes, and that’s proper sports kit as ordinary clothes would just be as if I’d jumped in a swimming pool. Cooler mornings and evenings are looking welcome and, as an older person, that seems an odd thing to say.

After a night of no sleep I had a lovely afternoon seeing 2 of.my grandchildren for first time since coming out of the JR and our son cooked a lovely heart healthy supperBut Im SO TIRED x

I haven't really coped at all these past few days. It's the humidity which is the worst. We had a short storm today here in North Yorkshire around 6pm and a downpour but it's still very humid. Unfortunately we live in a flat, second floor facing the sun 🌞 and the past few days the flat has been a constant 26 degrees πŸ₯΅.

We are going to Northumberland tomorrow until Friday and it looks like it is going to get very cool by the middle of the week with showers. That'll do for me, I'll be very happy and go prepared with waterproofs and jumpers πŸ˜‰.

You have my sympathy! As mentioned elsewhere I have also developed a hear rash which got worse as the hot days continued. Added to this was right hypotension which made bending down to pick things up a nightmare (slight dizziness). This afternoon we had a shower which made things better outside so I flung the windows open (no tjroughdraft in this over 60s duplex) and within 30 minutes some half-wit nearby lights a bonfire! The number of utterly stupid people is definitely on the increase. Regards, Mr Meldrew! 🀣

francesw47 profile image

dreadful! We should not moan after such a disappointing summer, but this has been pretty awful. Not so much the high temps but the humidity. I live by the sea so some slight relief from a faint sea breeze (but not much) and just melted. Remember as a child being given crisps with extra salt (remember the packet with the blue twist of salt?!) to offset the effects of heat ...so went in search of extra salt (Marmite for me), which was fun. Otherwise, shady spot, hat, factor 50.outside my beach hut. Heart not coping terribly well so gave up on thoughts of a walk...lots of tachycardia and dizziness. Nasty. Hope tomorrow is cooler. How on earth did you cook a roast yesterday......you must have melted!

I'm glad your breathing is a little better. Sadly, most Brits don't know how to cope with the heat. Having lived in a hot climate, I learned a trick or two. You open the windows, doors, blinds, curtains, etc., first thing in the morning to let some cooler air in.

Once it starts to warm up, you close all the windows, doors, blinds, and curtains on the side of the house the sun is beating on. As the sun moves around during the day, you close those windows, doors, curtains, and blinds to keep the heat out as much as possible.

This helps keep the house as cool as possible. You would only open the windows and doors in the heat if there's a good breeze that you can take advantage of. Other than that, to keep the heat out as much as possible, you keep everything closed.

When the heat becomes unbearable - take a cool shower or wet your hair, wrists, and feet with cooler water as this will cool you down quickly in the heat.

Most people with asthma and lung and heart issues also suffer from breathing difficulties when the pollen count is high. To check it out just google the pollen count, the MET office has it on their website site. It would be best to keep the doors and windows closed when it's high. Your inhalers might need something else to help your breathing. You might want to talk to the Dr. about a good anti-histamine, like fexofenadine.

That's what my son does every day, opens windows around 6.00 am and around 7.30 everything is closed with all the blinds closed, and it does helps doing it.

I live 5 mins away from Heathrow so you can imagine the temperature where I am, it was dead on 33c yesterday, Today is a little bit better but still to hot for me!.

All the best to everyone.

No oven goes on in my little house Yumz in this heat darling πŸ‘ As I mentioned in my other post! Let fresh air in, in the morning, close the curtains or blinds were the sun shines on your windows depending which they are facing, North, East, South or West! Be prepared, it's that simple and tell your Mum to prepare meals without the oven right, salads, bit of chicken or fish which is quickly prepared and use the microwave to have a nice baked potato medium size, 10 mins for one, and less heat created ! Last time I had a full roast 🀣 once a year at my daughter's at Christmas time πŸ‘πŸ˜

You have read my last post about the Heatwave and how people are coping! There has been lovely and helpful ideas from people πŸ‘Œ

I haven't read through all replies so I'm sorry if this is a repeat but the worse thing you can do if its hotter outside than in ,which it has been , is to open windows and doors . Close them and let the fan cool the air inside .Oh and dont point the fan towards the ceiling you'll blow hot air back down

Poor you you are suffering and your so young, your lucky to have a lovely supportive family around you. Dinner sounded good , haven’t used my oven since End of November or my hob as it’s induction and I’ve got the pacemaker now, so it’s microwave and air fryer only saves on electric πŸ™„ !!!

I live on the coast so get in the sea during the hot weather to cool off.I was on leave last week so was able to do that every day. Back to reality today.

I also cold shower before bed and keep hair wet. I sometimes take a Cold towel to bed too, with a cold water spray to hand. I keep windows open in different parts of the house for air flow overnight, and in the day if a breeze. Obviously stay hydrated, stay in the shade at peak times. And avoid ovens! πŸ˜‰ 🌸

The best way to keep a house as cool as possible in very hot sunny weather is to shut the windows on the side facing the sun, and also close the curtains or blinds behind them. On the sides away from the sun open all the windows. Then swap over as the sun moves round.

Hi, we are not used to this extreme heat so it is difficult to get our bodies acclimatised to it. In the 80’s I lived in Kuwait, with over 100 degrees some days, and what I learned there was to keep all windows and external doors closed, pull all curtains and blinds on the sides of the house where the sun is shining. You alternate shutting curtains as the sun moves around. Personally I shut all curtains in the house to keep it cool. I keep internal doors open to circulate the air and open windows only when the sun has gone down.

Even doing all the above it has been very hot inside but that is because our houses are designed to keep in the warmth in for the winter months. Pleased to say it is much cooler and more bearable today which for me is far more pleasant and hope it is for you too.

Silvertail profile image

We are always advised to keep all windows and curtains closed in the day time to keep the heat out. (Believe me, in Queensland we know all about heat.) It also is more efficient for the air conditioning. Despite this, I feel the heat terribly, especially the humidity. Give me winter any time.

Lilypond39 profile image
Lilypond39

For a start , you shut all doors ,windows and curtains during the day. Keep the sun out of your house, as soon as it goes down open them up and let the cool air in. If you have fans ,that's good. Anyone who has lived in a hot country will tell you this.

Bernar profile image
Bernar

yes the humidity has been awful. If you are well enough go to a supermarket or even your local Co-op which is air conditioned and stand in there for a bit to get a short respite from the heat and humidity?

Thank goodness it’s cooler and drier this morning.

I always understood that during the day you kept all windows shut to keep the hot air out and only open at night to let the cool air in. Also, to always keep blinds and curtains closed on the sunny side of your house. I have severe heart failure and this works a treat for me to keep me and my home cool. After all, on mainland southern Europe they always have shutters that they keep closed during the day on the sunny side. Give it a try. You’ll be amazed at the difference. πŸ˜‹

You've been inundated with replies so I suspect we are all suffering. My body doesn't sweat at all anywhere except my forehead and neck. It's been running into my eyes and just pouring off my forehead, even waking around 6am with my pillow soaking wet. When we had the early heatwave I started taking dioralyte every other day but even that hasn't helped this time. I've felt so ill with it. I read the other day that instead of pointing fans at yourself, you should point a fan through an open window pointing outside so it blows the hot air out of your room. Haven't tried it yet because it's now cooled down and raining t hank goodness. I only had to go out once last week to the hospital but I felt ill on the way home so I drove into a petrol station and went into the beautiful air conditioned shop and just browsed until I'd cooled down enough to go home.

I've got an air conditioner, they're only a few hundred quid and well worth it for a good nights sleep.

Not expensive to run esp if you have economy 7 at night.

We spend a fortune on heating systems so why not a few hundred on cooling?

Hi,

Here’s a few tips to keep you cooler indoors when it’s like an oven outside.

Before bed….OPEN WINDOWS. ( House cools.)

Early morning CLOSE windows, doors, blinds/ curtains. ( This is because the house has cooled down overnight and you now need to keep the sunshine out of the windows and the hot air that’s outside the house from coming indoors.)

Bedtime…Open windows again.

It really works if you do it! Good luck.

Hi, Yumz199725,

I am so sorry that you are suffering with all of the heat! We have also had a very hot, humid, and low rain summer. The last two days have cooled some and we have had some rain storms with the advent of Hurricane Lee. I don’t live near the ocean, but we often get rain when a hurricane comes up the East coast. I have really enjoyed the slightly cooler weather.

I hope that you soon get some cooler weather too. We will still have a few hot days, but fall is coming! Hoping that you soon get some heat relief! ❀️

I’m Italian so I guess I’m a little bit more used to the heat but some advice when/if next heatwave strikes: we normally keep the shutters/curtain closed during the hottest hours, especially if facing south and we reopen towards the evening when the air is cooler.

We don’t even consider using the oven during the day πŸ˜²πŸ˜…
