Hi any body tell me, will i have to be on Bisoprolol for life after having mechanical heart valve fitted or is it just for first year ?
Bisoprolol: Hi any body tell me, will i... - British Heart Fou...
Bisoprolol
It'll depend how you're doing after the year... you should be assessed and your needs determined at that point. Everyone is different so it's impossible to say just now.
I had a stent fitted in 2017. Since then I have taken bisoprolol daily, 1.25 mg. No problems at all. Yesterday my GP advised I can stop taking them. My resting heart rate had decreased from 62 to 54 for the past 3 weeks. My GP now says no need for beta blockers, woo hoo ! I will let you know if I get any withdrawal issues. Tapering off meantime. Hope this helps.
Hi Andy how did you find coming of bisoprolol I've been reducing for two weeks and tonight I feel dreadful
Hi, you really need advice from a cardiologist. I was on biso after a stent fitting and also put on ramipril. After a year I was ok but still not feeling myself, even though I was fine before the stent op. I had a private consultation with a heart consultant and he stopped the biso and doubled my Ramipril instead. He also gave me an examination and checked through my records and put my mind at rest saying all was well. After a couple of weeks I started to feel much better. I don’t know if it’s the mental effect or the biso was making me feel sluggish as it reduces your heart rate, which takes the strain off your heart while it is in recovery. Maybe have your meds reviewed but by an expert rather than your GP although you could start there. All the best.
Hi, I was only on it for about 8 months when cardiologist said I could come off it. I don't know how relevant it is but I had no other heart issues and fairly young, 50, and fit.Take care.
Andy
It's a piece of string, some are off in a year or less. Others for a long time, it's down to a lot of factors.I was on 2x1.5 morning and night and after a year got fed up with the side effects (mostly breathless) so I hassled the dr and even wrote to Mr R my surgeon, they told me that I could taper off.
That didn't quite work, from 68 to 95 BPM,but after some fiddling around I am now on a daily 1.5 and 70 which I am regarding as a partial win, still breathless but not as much.
Speak to your Dr, but remember that it is possible that even if they start you on the taper off, the results may be start taking them again.
Good luck.
Hello. I am on a low dose of 1.25mg due to heart failure so I cannot comment on your situation. It has unfortunately reduced my pulse rate to 54 bpm and I feel permanently tired. I am on 3 other meds so one of those might be responsible for the tiredness.
Hello Joby92, I got two stents in near 3 years ago after an MI . I was given Clopidogrel 75mg,Furosemide 40mg also Bisopropel Fumarate 2.5mg . Up till now ive had no problems with any of them. Just lately have been prescribed Isotard 50mg XL tablets for angina.
Hi, As you've had a Mech Valve fitted, you should have an annual review with a Cardiologist, so I would ask for clarity why you're still on Bisoprolol. Its normally a short-term med for valve patients, unless there's another heart related issue going on in the background necessiating its use. Other than immediately following my own Valve surgeries for a month or so, it was 27years after my first before I was put on Bisoprolol and that was due to Heart Failure not the valves.
Valve surgery is different to other forms of heart disease and for many people, especialy those that have opted for Mech valves, the only medication we're put on is Warfarin.
As I say seek clarification.
Best regards.
Hi Joby. I was put on Bisoprolol 1.25 mg a few months ago for arrhythmia and atrial fib. but have been experimenting with herbal medicine from a medical herbalist and now dietary changes as I may have histamine overload. I want to come off Biso as it makes me dizzy and tired and headachy. I cannot comment on your situation except to endorse seeing a cardiologist for examination and advice. We are all unique! Best wishes, Sam-Sam
Hi
My husband had aortic root surgery at the age of 57, four year ago. At the same time it was discovered that he needed aortic valve replacement so he received a mechanical valve.
The consultant said the bisoprolol was to "calm" everything as during heart surgery "everything takes a battering". My husband regained fitness quickly and after a couple of months my husband was advised by his consultant to come off bisoprolol. All he takes now is warfarin. My husband did go back on bisoprolol for a short while as he was advised to take it again to see if it would help as he is much troubled from the thudding of his mechanical valve. The bisoprolol did not help with this so my husband again came off bisoprolol.
Of course please be advised by your consultant. I hope all goes well for you.
