Stent not relieving angina symptoms - so far

Last year I began to get mild burning in my chest and back when walking. So angina was suspected. I was put onto aspirin, statin, bisoprolol and ranolazine and they seemed to greatly reduce the problem. I had a heart scan which detected a significant blockage in my LAD. So last week I got a stent and stopped taking the ranolazine as advised.

So today and yesterday I went for a long test walk and got the burning sensation again. So disappointing ! I get the burning sensation after a few minutes of walking but I find that if I stop and breath deeply for about 30 seconds it goes away.

So has the stent failed to eliminate my angina? Should I wait a bit longer for the stent to settle in?

PS - I'm beginning to wonder if the burning sensation is actually angina as I have a hiatal hernia and a very recent endoscopy detected a few stomach ulcers.

Hi bizzy55

I’m sorry to hear about your symptoms.

Due to mentioning that you already have a hiatal hernia and stomach ulcers, could the burning sensation that you feel in your chest be coming from those? Both of these issues can cause indigestion which is commonly associated with angina like pains.

It was just a thought to consider. I hope others can help with some more insights.

All the best.

Hi there, I know with a couple of my stents, it takes time to settle, they have been inside your arteries, it stirs up the cholesterol blockages, the medication usually calms everything down. But please discuss with cardiologist when you get seen again. Take care. Moni

Hello

If the pain hasn’t gone then definitely you need to go back to the doctor.

I have 3 stents in my LAD and continued with symptoms after they were put in.

Without giving too much detail:

The stents were checked with further angiograms and it was assumed I have a problem with my smaller arteries.

Changes in my medication have resolved my problem.

If you’re still getting symptoms then you must speak to your doctor so they can investigate.

I wish you well

Thanks Sunshinebrew. Did it require a change in medication strength or medication type ?

It took a while but changing the beta blocker to calcium channel blocker worked in the end but this was specific to me and my condition, so wouldn’t be the answer for everyone.

This was done gradually on advice from my cardiologist and with my doctor

I did also gain a lot of information support and advice from this forum at the time.

My advice to you is if you still have symptoms and pain be persistent and get it checked out with the doctors.

I wish you well.

Thanks again Sunshinebrew. I shall try to speak to my cardiologist. Assuming I can get an appointment. 🙁

Would definitely speak to your cardiologist or GP and I'm sure they will be able to help.
