I had a routine check up today and my blood pressure is very high, nurse said it could be "White coat syndrome" but I've got to do an at home reading for 2 weeks then go back to discuss the results.
I've had a headache for the past few days but I've been really busy so assumed it was down to that, but now I don't know.
Not looking for medical advice just wanted a rant

Hopefully, Vee, a tweak in your medication dosage will help to sort everything out. My blood pressure shoots up every time I have to deal with a medic of any description! Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you. Carol x
Ah so good to hear from you V. Sorry your BP is so high hope it was just the thought of having your BP checked that did it. X hope it's nothing bad giving you a headache aw hun ❤️
Hi V, lovely to see your post. I hope the bp settles down soon. I know drinking water can sometimes push up your BP which clearly you don’t want, at least that’s what I was told by a nurse. Just wondering about the headaches, are you drinking enough? Just wondered as you said you have been very busy and might be a bit dehydrated? xx
I drink so much water, it's a running joke with my friends that I'm practically 100% water It does mean I'm always peeing but it's very unusual for me to be dehydrated
But thanks, I didn't know that it could push up blood pressure. Maybe I should cut down
Hope it’s just a one off for you and it calms down. These things are such a worry and cause stress. Try to relax if you possibly can and get good nights sleep, because the worry doesn’t help. Viscous circle. At least you are being monitored which is the main thing. Take care and best wishes for good results.
hi V, it happened to me a few weeks ago. My BP at the docs was borderline high when it’s always low at home. I was told that it happens all the time. My daughter works in a&e and called it white coat syndrome. Keep taking the readings at home but obviously seek help if it stays high. Lovely to see you back on here, you’ve been missed. X
I've missed everyone on here, but I don't really have anything to say anymore. Not that wouldn't get reported anyway and I'm not a fan of the social thread so I pop on occasionally to see how everyone is.
The nurse said it could be White Coat Syndrome, but it was quite high. So she's concerned. I've not done a reading yet, and I'm not calm enough. I can feel my heart pounding with the stress so I just need to relax
Wait until tomorrow and see how you feel. In the mean time try and do something which relaxes you and try and get some sleep tonight. If they were very concerned they wouldn’t have let you leave surgery but I understand why you feel anxious. Xxx
omg I am just like you. Same thing happened to me last week I was asked to get a blood pressure machine but I get pounding heart just thinking about it. Lol need a Valium to do it I got an appointment next Tuesday as they put up my amlodapine to10 but causing problems not so much fluid as eye pain which is nota common side effect
My cardiologist poo- poos the white coat scenario. When I suggested that to him he replied yes but how many other times in life does your blood pressure rise not only due to seeing a “white coat”. Made sense!
What is "Very high"? White coat syndrome is very real, not helped by general anxiety that many on this forum understandably display.
Was it the usual rushed appointment whereby you rushed to the surgery were ushered straight into a room down a long corridor by a rushing nurse who then proceeded to slap the cuffs on you, didn't wait for you to calm down then took 2 readings?
I have never had a BP taken in a surgery that matches the recommendations. Have you taken your own readings since in a calm collected atmosphere with your mother removed?
Thing is the rush simulates a “real” reading. There’s no point calming trying to trick the machine!
A lot of he NHS uses Omron brand machines, you can buy one off the shelf in the chemist or Amazon. Get one and use it, then the suprise won’t be there in th hospital or GP, you will know what happens.
Even if your BP is high, mines 140/100 with a lot of prescriptions, trust me there not worried - I said here’s a month of readings this isnt “white coat syndrome” and the response was just “ok” 😕
Hi, don’t get too hung up on it. It fluctuates and factors affect it throughout the day. I spend six months getting mine right being a fit and health 48 year old. It peaked at 260 over 150 😍. Just monitor it over time.
Bless you. I was initially told I had white coat hypertension and it didn't bother me at all that was two years ago. I bought a blood pressure monitor and took my blood pressure each day for a month it was up and down the whole time. Then I saw a Cardiologist last year and had a raft of tests and was diagnosed with essential hypertension and moderate left ventricular hypertrophy, recently put on higher dose of ramapril and other medication and started recording my blood pressure again at the doctors request and in a months time will make appointment to see my GP however blood pressure still not controlled.Speak to your GP they will help.
H Valentina7 weeks after my TAVI aortc valve replacement my blood pressure went crazy and I ended up.collapsing znd been carted off now ambulance to be admitted but a change of meds sorted it out
I getbwhote syndrome everyone. I can take my BP at home and they're fine. See what the two weeks bring you. If you worry too much about it in the two weeks, it may elevate your BP at home.
