High BP reading suddenly

Hello - having had stood in blood pressure. I was sitting watching tv when had pain in back like indigestion . I got up and felt unsteady so decided to take blood pressure ( instead of doing my planned workout!). It was 190 over 90 but pulse only 46. As pain across shoulders called ambulance who did usual and by then bp down to 183 over 102. They said ecg OK and as pain gone have left me to call dr tomorrow. I feel stupid because last week had rung my dr about my drop in bp whilst exercising and palpitations and chest pain I had had but dr said not to worry and that my left ventricular stiffening was just age. My bp was 135/80 this morning a bit high for me but I have never been 190 before. I have been asking dr whether I need more tests but told not to worry and was reassured last week but I am now feeling pretty unwell. Has anyone else experienced strange high bp brought on by just sitting around?!

Hi Janouska, reading your post I think it's worth letting the doctor know what's been happening and especially as your still not feeling well regards Sheena

Thanks yes I will. Got through the night fully dressed on sofa. Living alone is scary when you are not feeling well but I know people have been through a lot worse than me.

They may have but at this time it's yourself you need to be thinking about, so be kind to yourself sending a big hug 🤗 Sheena

Totally agree with you janouska I’ve had many scary nights and still do. Living alone is scary in the middle of the night last Saturday night I had an angina attack but wasn’t sure if it was another heart attack. I leave my front door unlocked all night incase I have to call ambulance 111 have always been there to reassure me they have been brilliant

Yes I need to have a key system so that I don’t ever have to have door kicked in! I’m hoping for a full night in bed- little pleasures that keep us going.

I am on a number of blood pressure tablets yet I still get 150 - 170 and occasionally 200 plus but don’t feel any. Different when it that high. I too have been told it is just my age so one learns to live with - well I have and am doing fine - even thought a couple of days ago I managed to put nail super glue into my eye thinking I was putting in eye drops. I am fine now - it is amazing what the eye does for its self. I had glue on the eye and within two days IThe eye has rejected it and I am no longer in pain. Amazing - I thought I was going to loose the sight in that eye but no - as I say I am fine now. My blood pressure went right down to 127 this morning whereas I am normally in the 140 or 150.

I think you answer is not to worry about it unless it stays at a very high number for a number of days. Good luck with it all and stop worrying.

Thank you that is reassuring. My bp has been better today but every time got up and walked about got heart palpitations. Really felt like being kicked. Anyway I got call back from dr this afternoon so happened to mention that on top of the high bp and she told me to go to A andE. You can guess what they said ecg was ok so go to dr and ask for thyroid test and 48 hour monitor .?The nurse told me to not keep taking my bp but I only did it last night as was nervous that stayed so high for so many hours and I didn’t want to go upstairs to bed until I could be sure was getting better. Anyway I hope I can get to speak to my own gp next week as due blood test for statin review.

Ya, was wondering if this could be thyroid related

I do take my blood pressure ever night and every morning because it is so erratic. I note it in a book where I also note what I eat ,what snacks also, my bathroom movements ( have a problems in that area and am under a consultant for it) and any extra medicines I take - with an area for notes-to record anything that happens during the day or during the night. When ever I have a doctors appointment I take my book with me so when it comes to how is my blood pressure I show them the book. It works well for me.Dont take your blood pressure during he day - you are only getting yourself under unnecessary pressure. Content yourself with taking night and morning. Take care of yourself. Bye

Thank you. Yes I am going to try to stop taking my bp and forget about it for a while! Not easy when heart keeps giving me thumps but I know walking helps that so am going to do that - keeps me away from the bp monitor too!🙂

My blood pressure readings are quite erratic, but I dont feel any different. My doctor said as long as on average its below 140/80 its ok. I can get reading between 120 and 160 with the odd one outside this range. At the bottom between 75 and 105 Even within a few mins the reading can fluctuate by up to 15 - strange?

I have been reading the above posts with great interest as I have also to watch my BP, I am on Amlodopine and Ramipril.

I also am highly allergic to any quantity of caffeine including decaf, with caffeine my SBP can spike to >160; entirely without caffeine my SBP currently ranges between 119 and 128.

I have no problem with DBP.

Without caffeine my ectopic heart beats have all but vanished, my waterworks are much improved and I am calmer.

I cannot believe I am the only individual with such adverse reactions to caffeine, try giving it up entirely for 2 weeks and then check your BP; you may be surprised even delighted.

Be careful of Dr's telling you all is OK with high BP.!This happened to me multiple times over around a decade, chopping and changing meds, altering the doses too. I started to experience strange symptoms. .slow digestion, fast irregular heart beat, extreme tiredness, aches, cramps, feeling thirsty, passing alot of urine and anxiety over trivial situations but never connected this to blood pressure. Also I was in and out of A/E with strange blood salts readings, very low potassium levels and high end sodium,.This kept repeating the same pattern. Feel dreadful,go to hospital, have blood test and ecg ,discharged on potassium tablets. My gp took it as normal for me because every time it was tested it was always low! I actually asked him to prescribe a potassium supplement permanently but he refused on the grounds of too high being dangerous! !!

I was struggling to digest food so was sent to a rather clever gastroenterologist who ran lots of different blood tests and low and behold had a positive aldosterone test. This indicates a serious endocrine disorder of the adrenal glands, hallelujah I am not going crazy! Started treatment immediately but have serious complications from all those undiagnosed (so untreated) years. The worse thing was that 3 !! Doctors diagnosed me as attention seeking/ mental problems and I just wasn't been listened to or believed.

Thank you for reading my story.

I hope it stops someone else having to go through all of this for an accurate diagnosis. The endocrine disorder is called Conns syndrome.
