Nausea after valve replacement and bypass

Had my mitral valve replaced and a bypass 4 weeks ago now, and have been home 3 weeks.

Suffered nausea and lack of appetite from day 1 out of surgery, and aches and pains until this weekend - miraculously they all seem to have gone away. However the nausea seems to actually be getting worse, took me an hour to eat dinner tonight. I'm on bisoprolol (low dose), furosemide, spironolactone, aspirin and simvastatin (was on those before) and ticagrelor.

Is it any of these, or is it all from the op (anaesthetic?) - my sense of smell is now extremely sensitive, my mouth tends to be dry, the taste of sweet things and herbs are exaggerated (they become sickly) and some savoury things taste bitter.

I'm dreading it being from the op and staying for months, haven't enjoyed a single meal since I came home.

Seeing the consultant next week.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about your problems with nausea. I had nausea for a long time after my bypass. In the end it was down to the mix of medication and anxiety. It will get better, please speak to your GP if it continues and talk to then about your mix of meds. Also I found some foods could trigger nausea where they hadn’t before. I do hope you get sorted out, it’s an awful felling. Take care, Judi

Thank you. It is a horrible feeling, and it's not helped by the news on Monday my best friends been diagnosed with stomach cancer (started before that news though)

I am really sorry to hear about your friend. I had all sorts of tests due to the length of time I had nausea and also the amount of weight I lost, which was 2 and a half stone. If it’s any consolation they found nothing it was really down to meds and anxiety. I hope you feel better soon.

I had it for sometime and was given Metoclopramide it was great it certainly stops you feeling nauseous😜

I was thinking that would be the best option.

Not to bad thanks for asking, up’s and down’s. I’m still not totally fixed and have an appointment on 22nd August to see if any more can be done but I’m starting to get my head sorted out that if this is the new me then I’ve just got to get used to it. How are you?

Hiya, I am okay. I just get fed up with side effects of meds and then I start wondering if it’s my heart. I get alot of weakness in my limbs, which I think is my BP med. I am going to see a cardiologist privately in October. I saw her last December, and it was the best money I spent. I think the psychological impact of my bypass has been as challenging as my physical recovery. You have had such a tough time, I do hope things progress well for you. Let me know how you get on in August. You can always PM me. Take care, Judi

Doctors prescribed me cyclizine 50mg - anyone any experience? Seems to me it's just an over the counter anti histamine.

I had cyclizine for a while but sadly it didn’t make much difference. Judi

Cyclizine is given for nausea but it’s not great it’s like a first step. If it’s doesn’t work in the first 48hrs go back to the gp.

Hope it stops soon👍

The ONLY Rx prescribed for me, that you list is Spironolactone. Spironolactone made my Hyper-Aldosterone problems worse. It was replaced a couple months ago, with the drug called Eplerenone, which has lessened the negative symptoms of excess, but hasn't overcome the cyclic cortisol symptoms that I experience. Sorry that I cannot help. :-(
