I am back at the Hydro-dam today, where a dam wall contains water between mountain ranges on three-sides.
As you saw last week the water was nearly all ice, but several days of hot sunshine & a few very heavy showers has now melted more ice and so the reflections are now even more beautiful and I thought you might like to see.
If you zoom in you can see ...
...the cable station cafe on the Dam wall, which serves a lovely coffee. ( I'm sure they serve beer too but as it was only 8am it was a bit early for that!).
.... the 'blue bit' between the mountains and the reflection is still ice and so doesn't give any reflection.
It's ment to be a good place for fly fishing in the Summer, and if you are well enough and there's no snow then you can walk around the whole Dam 2/3rds of the walk is flat (ish), but the last 1/3rd is a good couple of steep climbs up & down. Lots of the path is currently still closed at the miment due to the snow & I'm not fit enough to walk it anyway - BUT maybe next year or the following one, or maybe just in my dreams.
A great photograph of a fabulous looking place! Are you staying up there? I only ask because with a heart condition you would probably have difficulty with the walk? And is there a hotel or mountain hut nearby? I used to love getting up into the mountains in places like this but with the angina and general old age it seems like those days are past.
If you liked mountain hiking then you would so love it here as there are so many different mountain ranges with lots of walking paths of / for different abilities of hiking right through to climbing.
Most of the spring flowers are out now so the long green grass on the lower slopes is filled with white, yellow, pink, purple and blue flowers with giant bumble bees buzzing about. The cows are just being moved to the upper pastures & they have their cow bells on which ehco off the mountainside.
Being glacial mountains there's bits of stone coping up throughout the flowering slopes & open pastures as if giants have tossed them about like a game of marbles.
There's so many different color green trees in the mountain forests that I don't think an artist with a paint box could match them all. And the amount of bird song we can hear from the trees is amazing.
Where the mountain sides aren't covered in trees, they are exposed stone of varing grey, pink & rust- iron colours, or lots of grey scree. Lots of snow patches are still visible but it's now melting higher up so we can also hear & sometimes see the water falls & streams rushing down the mountain side on the way to the river in the valley.
There's also birds of prey to see hovering on the warm air currents, and beautiful fluffy white cloud formations in the blue sky.
It's t-shirt weather needing a slather of suntan lotion, a sunhat & sunglasses, but still a need for a warm jumper up near the snowline or when the wind blows up off the snow, but there's only been one spectacular mountain storm so far so the waterproofs have stayed packed away.
There are huts at the cable car stations and on some walks in the mountains, serving soup, hot dogs or weiner snitzel and hot drinks, beer or ice cream.
I'm not up to walking too far with my arrithmia, general unfitness & a bad foot at the moment. I can manage a max 4 miles very slowly over about 3 hours with lots of stops & provided i dont try to talk as I walk; but upward slopes & staircases i really stuggle with. So we take the cameras & just take our time walking, then rest & read afterwards.
We are not staying as high up as the hydro-dam but we are still up in a mountain valley about half hour post-bus ride away from it, & we have a lovely mountain view too from the balcony where I sit after our daily walk. There's sheep in the field opposite & a children's farm with Donkeys, goats, etc just down the road.
On the hydro-dam, we weren't very far from the hut in the picture (it can be seen on right hand side if you zoom in) & the paths still weren't fully open for walking due to the snow .... so we didn't risk it.
But we've done a couple of different "short" mountain walks nearer to where we are staying - downwards walks between cable cars & there were huts on the way, but most of our walking has been in the valley where we are staying, or we've taken a post-bus & train to have a walk around local towns.
Walking has been a littld bit more effort here but not too bad. My oxy level has been around 92% here ... at home it's usually 94% .... so there is a bit of a difference. Pulse rate / heart is between 58 & 61 at rest... a little higher than at home too. I didn't bring the BP machine so can't say if there's a difference there or not.
We've been here nearly two weeks & unfortunately it's almost time to leave.
And after all these mountains and fresh air I think i'm definately going to notice the pollution when I get back home given that I'm commuter distance from London.
When I was a child and camping with farmerโs permission I remember seeing the reflection in a small blue lake of the Matterhorn touched with pink at sunrise. It is a glorious image that has remained with me. One of my deep regrets is that my heart will no longer allow me to go into the mountains but I have my memories
I wonder if you are old enough to have been playing at being Hedi or looking to join the Chalet School (later stories being set in Switzerland) when you camped near the mountains as a child?
I'm pleased you have very happy memories of the mountains to cherish now that you can't visit.
One if those places where you can stand still in the same spot but the picture becomes different as the clouds move. If wasnt so cold I could've stayed all day & filled the phone with photos. ๐
The HydroDam is called the Lunersee. It's in the Volarlberg region of Austria - between the Tyrol (Innsbruck Mountain Areas) and Switzerland. You get up to it via cable car (or you can walk).
Another lovely (but potentially dangerous) place near here to walk around is the town of Bludenz, because while you are walking you get lovely wafts of melted milk chocolate in the air ( like the smell when you melt chocolate to make cornflake cakes at Easter), because it is the home of the Milka Chocolate Factory.๐ฌ
Many many moons ago was travelling through Europe by Motorcycle on way to Yugoslavia, as was, and I think we were in the Austrian countryside at the time when we caught a whiff of something really savoury. made you feel Hungry. Rode down this hill and around a bend to be confronted by the Maggi soup factory. Hope it tasted as good as it smelled.๐
Wow. Maggie make some good soups and sauces that are different to those sold in the UK. We always end up taking some home with us.

I bet you had a wonderful time biking through Europe!

Long ago the 1st time we drove in Germany we had to pull off the motorway as the traffic speed & cutting up was frightening & the sign posts didn't make sense as they only showed the very final destination of the road. My map reading really isn't good & so we wound cross-country zig-zagging all the way as I managed to match sign posts with village names on the map & head us in the general direction of where we needed to get to. Took hours, but the weather was nice, the car was a converable so we rolled the top down, and on the way somewhere up a mountain off a very windy road in the Black Forest we stopped at a biker's cafe for a coffee & had the best ever apple cake & custard. Never-ever been able to find the place again since!
yesterday I posted but it never appeared so Iโm trying again!!! I know itโs very early in the year to ask this but I need to sort it. As Iโve said in my previous posts I hate living alone and I need to get some recommendations from people who go away for Xmas in uk, I live in the south and donโt want to travel far is there any older singles on here that have done this, last year was my first year totally alone at Xmas and it was awful bearing in mind I had just had my pacemaker after cardiac arrest which made things worse. Sorry itโs not a happy jokey post but didnโt know who else to ask as Iโm sure many of us are in the same boat
Youโre taking first steps, reaching out, and you should be patting yourself on the back for that. Not an easy thing to do. I know that if I was on my own with AF life would not be at all easy, and you must still be grieving. Just an idea - I used to help out at Christmas for a local mental health charity and it was always a lovely atmosphere. Many tasks can be carried out sitting and even just an hour of your time would be appreciated. Itโs also a great way to get to know other people. Nearer the time, it will also be worth looking to see what organisations are running Christmas lunches. You can let them know beforehand that you are recently bereaved and feel vulnerable in a group situation. Itโs amazing how kind people can be. It sounds to me like your pacemaker is keeping you well now, so turning your mind to more social events is a great way forward. Wishing you good luck on your journey and hugs to you๐ค๐ค
May I suggest you obtain a brochure from local coach companies as they often offer a short- break away over Christmas/ New Year with a show & a dinner & other activities all arranged. Some will even pick up & drop off from home. Because you are going 'as a group' it's often easier to open conversations on the coach and / or over dinner or during an excursion / activity, than it is if you book into a hotel on your own. Also there's usually a Rep who manages to pull the group together.
You can ask lots of questions before you book such as whether they introduce you to each other, how many people go on their own, etc. to check if you feel the holiday is right for you.
Indeed!!.....it's like everyone's been good in class and has behaved as you were asked....here's a little treat for you!! Next week you might be allowed 2 chats!?.... anyway....good morning everyone x
recovering from a busy few days with 2 far flung school friends of70 years standing visiting. Just finished laundering vast quantities of bed linen and towels. It was lovely to see them again and know that as long as we are alive and whatever life throws at us we will always be friends. I am so lucky. Husband has had an ambulance and been to 3 hospitals in as many weeks and has horrible problems hanging over him. The garden is looking stunning and is a joy to behold. Have to pace myself or become very achy and breathless but am OK.
Iโm going to help Andy out today, as I think heโs having an extra long tea break and everyoneโs missing out on his jokes ๐คฃ.
My partner owns an Indian restaurant (he really does btw), they are so secretive about their flatbread recipe which meant that I had to sign a legal agreement.
Itโs just their standard Naan Disclosure Agreement. ๐
Two very old gentlemen sitting in the sun outside the nursing home when a naked old lady runs past. 'What on earth was that? 'Asked one man. 'No idea' said the other 'but it sure needs ironing'.
That actually sounds like lovely weather! We were at 85-90 degrees F yesterdayโalmost too warm. Plus, the plants and grass could do with a bit of rain. Lol! ๐ธ
Thank you, yes he is. And the best thing is he loves my daughter dearly and has cherished her through the last year while she suffered gruelling breast cancer treatment and I couldnโt get to help them as Iโd had a cardiac arrest and couldnโt drive for 6 months.
how ghastly for you. You feel so helpless when you can no longer help your children or grandchildren. At least you can be confident that she is loved and cared for.
hello from sunny Croydon. I only joined this site today as feeling a bit confused and worried about my possible illness so itโs lovely to read funny posts ๐
hello and welcome! Yes on the whole funny - just watch out for some of Hidden jokes some can be duds ๐๐๐ but others cheer you up just when you need it๐
So, let me welcome you. We're a bit of a mixed bunch, on different journeys with various heart problems. We pop in and out of this corner to share the good days and get some inspiration to get us through the not so good days. Sometimes I just read; sometimes I feel like contributing.
Hope you'll get something positive out of the site. Cheers from sunny Bohemia.
As explained by others this is the Social Stream for posting day to day chat & for enjoying Andy's jokes.
If you have any specific queries relating to your heart issues then it's best to post them separately as a new post (& not here on the Social Stream) so that they can be reviewed by everyone, that way you'll get more reviews & responses which hopefully might be helpful to you.
ohhhh no not a bad thing at all. My daughter and I just look at each other now and again and just shake our heads. Never give up on the jokes Andy smiling is the best healer of all x
how lovely. Had a great 6 weeks in NZ a number of years back. Extraordinary how it has almost every landscape and climate in such close proximity to each other. Stunning scenery.
If you went to South island it's so stunning you run out of wows at the scenery round every corner.I live in North Island and it's now winter hence the snow but the views are still great I'm glad you had the chance to visit come back again soon
Yes we hired a car and went to Queenstown and loved Milford Sound where we took boat and saw stunning waterfalls. It had rained so much that they were boating in the centre of town a day after we arrived and we were marooned there for 4 days. Quite an experience. NZ is the most beautiful country and the people were very friendly and helpful. Loved it.
Little aside, maybe of interest: the song "Roll out the barrel" is originally Czech, a polka. The original lyrics are a regret of a love affair, rather a contrast to the lively tune.
Bit quiet on here today. Hot & humid here, but it's not supposed to rain.
A beautiful Czech instrumental polka written in 1927 with Czech words first put to it in 1934. Then a recording first done in English in 1939.
I never realised that the first line is: "In Heaven, there is no beer, thatโs why we drink it here!" I do wonder if that was in the original Czech wording, or just added in to the later English version recording by the boozy British ๐บ.
Anyway .... Roll Out the Barrell is ment to be an invitation to everone to enjoy the present moment and celebrate the joys of life with loved ones.
That's a very relevant sentiment to most Hearties - even if they're no longer allowed the Beer due to their Meds!
Despite the lively tune, the original Czech title was "Skoda Lasky", nothing to do with cars but a song regretting a romantic relationship. The chorus begins something like: Wasted is the love, I gave to you...
Ticks seem to be every-where at the moment. Where I live the "no mow in May" polices of the Local Councils have ment more long grass so they've spread from the Common into all the side verges all the way into town. The problem is we lots in the UK are not used to them, nor to watching out for the ymptoms of the Lyme disease they spread. Lots are very likely to just think its a bad bite reaction & not take much notice once it heals. Are they bad for dogs and cats too?
managed to get Lyme while walking in long grass last year. Bite very distinctive. Got two lots of horrid antibiotic pretty quickly which I had to take for a long time and it appears to have done the trick.
I need a bit of an uplift cos have been with my husband for over 12 hours in hospital today while he had an emergency drain fitted into his kidney and now has a bag. Very difficult day and a long drive home. Still we were lucky it had been done. Was phoned early this morning by a doc asking him to come in quickly cos his kidney function was only 4! Have not dared look at what my Kardia has to say about my heart.
Iโm sorry to hear about your day. I imagine your husband is incredibly exhausted as well. Iโm glad he was able to go in and have the emergency drain fitted in and they attended to him quickly.
I hope that you'll both be able to have a restful day today as you still be tired, & i hope that hubby will feel a bit better in terms of hus healtb now that the drain is in. Take care
I will be going back to the hospital shortly. You are right I am tired and still worried because it will be a long time before my poor husband will be out of the woods
Good morning all. Thought I'd share some info with you (hope this is the right place.)
This morning, I read in the newspaper that The Flintstones will no longer be permitted to be aired in Dubai. A spokesperson for the channel was quoted in the article as saying, โA claim was made that people of Dubai would not understand the humour of the show, but we have reports that prove they Abu Dhabi Do.โ
They finally revealed the cause of Paul carer moles death ( s club 7) he had multiple heart issues ๐๐ฎ really serious ones I tried to attach the link to the story but don't know how. ๐ค๐
thank you. Husband still in hospital and on a drip with a drain in his side. Did not look great today. My bp has shot up of course - that is controllable though.
Hi Granny E(Tues 6th June) Just wondering how hubby is getting on in hospital and if he is improving, how you are coping with the stress / worry & the tiredness from visiting. Hope all is going OK. Take care.
Thank you for your suggestion, I know I can PM mamasoap but I felt her comment deserved & I wanted to make a more public acknowledgement! The post isn't deleted it's closed, I'm guessing it won't get reopened so I'll not worry about it any further.
You learn something new everyday I never knew you could close your post I just thought you could only delete it so that is good to know I will have to search where that option is x
I have just done a post and have to take it down quick before people think it is a post to test where the option is to close a post and I do not seem to have that option just to delete it if I want to which I better hurry up and do x
Without wishing to add to any controversy here, but I thought the post was put up for the attention of admin, moderators & the BHF. I don't understand why it was deleted before admin had the opportunity to look at the comments!
In reference to deletion of posts, I think if there was a feature where OPs could archive or save their posts away from the public instead of deleting them, that might be useful. This would also allow the OP to โrepublishโ the post again publicly if they wished to. However, this would be a feature and issue which admin or the moderators will have look into in order to make it possible on the forum.
Also just to add, I donโt think the post was deleted with any unkind intent. As the past has demonstrated, it has sometimes been better to delete posts which may escalate things in order to keep the peace. This may have been the case this time too.
But the post was there pretty much most of the weekend and was only deleted mid morning. I don't understand why the late deletion when it was FTA of admin etc to address certain points but was deleted before they even got to see it. That's what I'm struggling to understand. Hopefully admin will pick this up though & they'll be able to view the deleted post, it had some good comments that I hope admin will take on board.
I'm guessing that is the case. I do know admin have the facility to view private messages so it would be a bit strange not to be able to view deleted posts.
HU are admin. But, I didn't say they do look at PM, I said they have the facility to do so, which they quite rightly should be able to do as they have a duty to keep members safe. Each group would have it's dedicated HU admin who 'supposedly' oversee their group. Looking/searching for a deleted post wouldn't be difficult, they would simply set the parameters they need i.e. group, day, username etc. Andy has said he'll contact admin about it, so hopefully they'll respond to him. ๐ค
I used to do Admin on the anxiety forums some years ago on here it worked differently back then as I described maybe they have changed how they do it now hopefully if they have he will get his post back :- ) x
This platform is run by Health Unlocked their technicians etc decide and program in the format there are 100's of Communities on here all work the same
Organizations like BHF can apply to have a Community on here as they have done that gives them the ability to delete posts if needed stop anymore comments on posts but they cannot change the format of how it is set out like none of the other Communities can either only Healthunlocked could do that
Once a post has been deleted which thousands will be through all the Communities on here it would be near impossible for them to find it in the system and would take days if not longer to do so if it was even possible which they do not have the resources or time to do so before we decide for whatever reason we want to maybe delete our posts for good we have to think once we have it will be gone so BHF are powerless over this one x
I took the shell off of my racing snail, thinking it would make him faster. But if anything, it made him more sluggish!
- - - - -
Sluggish is how I feel today! 1st day back after travelling home from hols, had a bath, walked to the hospital, did a bit of shopping in town & have put a washing load on. Now I'm sitting here wired up with a 24hr holter meter & thinking I should really be doing some form of activity, when all I want go do is go to sleep.
For me it gets harder and harder to get moving, but after a (very) slow start I always feel better. It's important not to overdo it, but I read somewhere on here to have one simple goal each day, then you can look back at the end of the day on something positive. Good luck.
Can't you just not worry about the posts if you've missed them? Personally if I get a notification and click on it and it says it has been deleted I just move on. I just assume that person had their own reasons for taking it down ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Oh please ๐ you must try harder ๐๐๐ I did in fact make a lovely curry & Bombay potato dish this weekend if you're interested in the recipe. Sadly I can't bake, the only time I tried it was a disaster!! However, I kid you not, my knitting skills actually got me a job as a receptionist once ๐ ps: love the name & your sense of humour ๐
Just in case someone is wondering, Lezzers was responding to a new member who just joined today and not talking to herself ๐. They left as quickly as they came on this thread!
Oh he was definitely a troll, who I thought was actually quite funny, especially the name ๐๐ I loved the fact he/she thought he/she was being offensive enough to wind me up but I actually like a bit of banter! I so wanted to go back & say I'm in the middle of doing my ironing was that acceptable ๐๐ what was even funnier was the thread comments he/she decided to troll ๐ค๐ ๐
Yes, I saw they did it to a few others which seemed like harmless fun and definitely made me laugh ๐. Perhaps theyโll just pop in once in a while to cause a stir! Time will tell.
Yes, I saw the other comments & I've no doubt they'll be back ๐ In view of the comments they targeted I'm guessing it's someone who is already a member & set up a separate identity, you'd be very surprised at how many people actually do that! Or someone who has been removed and resurrected themselves, that also happens a lot! ๐ค๐๐
Iโm sure it was. They seemed familiar and comfortable with this forum. I think theyโve been monitoring the social thread from down under, wherever that is for them ๐.
A nice little mystery theyโve left behind for us!
Down under ๐๐ we need a detective ๐ง or maybe not. I hope whoever it was enjoyed his/her 5mins of fun, it certainly gave me a good laugh, & now I've got to get back to the baking, knitting & ironing ๐๐
Good idea. ๐ And it was actually true that my knitting skills helped me get a job as a receptionist, in a drs surgery of all places!! though I have to own up, it was more my joke about my knitting skills rather than my actual skills ๐
On the other hand, I think I may have changed my mind ๐๐. My partner owns a few restaurants, Indian being one of them, and my father recently acquired one. Theyโd cancel me out of their lives if they knew I was supporting this ๐
Oh, definitely can't have you cancelled, but how nice is that that you've got your own choice of restaurants, now I am jealous ๐ I'll delete the link as I think it might break forum rules anyway.
Iโve had the same problem for months. It took about a month for someone to get back to me, to then say my case is being referred and I still havenโt heard back. Think itโs been about 3 weeks since being referred to a new department to have the same issue sorted.
Different perspectives can be a good thing providing we don't argue. With regards to the picture .....Surely it's the letter " g " and not a number at all. ๐.
Yes, the user has deleted all their comments and left everyone else who they interacted with looking a bit โcuckooโ on here ๐ which they are not of course ๐.
It's definately a "g" and today it stands for "Glad. " Glad to have finally been able to remove the horrible itchy stickers & return the 24hr holter meter to Cardiology Investigations ๐ฅฐ.
Hallo my ole Cronie ๐. Believe it or not but I've never come across the term "cronies" before so I thought I'd look up the meaning of what appeared to me to be an old derogatory term ๐ค.
Was quite surprised ๐ฎ, to find it only means "friends / pals / mates" !
Suffice to say I'm happy to have found "friends" on the Social Thread (and elsewhere within the Forum) and so I wish you, and everyone on the Social Thread a good day today too ๐๐ค ๐.
I'm not aware of generally using derogatory words in my posts and apologise to everyone if I have.
As I said Cronies wasn't a word I'd ever heard before - it's very old fashioned so doesn't sound nice - which is why I looked if up.
And I'm not stressed at all today.
I've been out in the sunshine already, twice this morning and if was very nice. I did a lovely 4 mile walk (2 miles to the bakers to get fresh cooked bread when they opened at 7am, and 2 miles back again) before going for another walk to return my 24hour holter meter to the hospital, and walking back home again.
It's been a long time since I managed to do that much walking in a month - due to siactica, and a current foot injury as well as heart now.
Done several 25mile in a day walks in the past though.
Did 100 miles in a week once too on the Camino in Spain years ago. Would love to be able to do that again one day.
But at the moments its a a no-no (as 6 miles seems to be my max) & I will be in pain now with my foot for most of the day, after my walks this morning ๐ so will be hobbling about for hours.
