Hi All

Hope you are doing ok.

I am back at the Hydro-dam today, where a dam wall contains water between mountain ranges on three-sides.

As you saw last week the water was nearly all ice, but several days of hot sunshine & a few very heavy showers has now melted more ice and so the reflections are now even more beautiful and I thought you might like to see.

If you zoom in you can see ...

...the cable station cafe on the Dam wall, which serves a lovely coffee. ( I'm sure they serve beer too but as it was only 8am it was a bit early for that!).

.... the 'blue bit' between the mountains and the reflection is still ice and so doesn't give any reflection.

It's ment to be a good place for fly fishing in the Summer, and if you are well enough and there's no snow then you can walk around the whole Dam 2/3rds of the walk is flat (ish), but the last 1/3rd is a good couple of steep climbs up & down. Lots of the path is currently still closed at the miment due to the snow & I'm not fit enough to walk it anyway - BUT maybe next year or the following one, or maybe just in my dreams.

Take care

A great photograph of a fabulous looking place! Are you staying up there? I only ask because with a heart condition you would probably have difficulty with the walk? And is there a hotel or mountain hut nearby? I used to love getting up into the mountains in places like this but with the angina and general old age it seems like those days are past.

1234_6 profile image
1234_6 in reply to jerry12953

Hi Jerry,

If you liked mountain hiking then you would so love it here as there are so many different mountain ranges with lots of walking paths of / for different abilities of hiking right through to climbing.

Most of the spring flowers are out now so the long green grass on the lower slopes is filled with white, yellow, pink, purple and blue flowers with giant bumble bees buzzing about. The cows are just being moved to the upper pastures & they have their cow bells on which ehco off the mountainside.

Being glacial mountains there's bits of stone coping up throughout the flowering slopes & open pastures as if giants have tossed them about like a game of marbles.

There's so many different color green trees in the mountain forests that I don't think an artist with a paint box could match them all. And the amount of bird song we can hear from the trees is amazing.

Where the mountain sides aren't covered in trees, they are exposed stone of varing grey, pink & rust- iron colours, or lots of grey scree. Lots of snow patches are still visible but it's now melting higher up so we can also hear & sometimes see the water falls & streams rushing down the mountain side on the way to the river in the valley.

There's also birds of prey to see hovering on the warm air currents, and beautiful fluffy white cloud formations in the blue sky.

It's t-shirt weather needing a slather of suntan lotion, a sunhat & sunglasses, but still a need for a warm jumper up near the snowline or when the wind blows up off the snow, but there's only been one spectacular mountain storm so far so the waterproofs have stayed packed away.

There are huts at the cable car stations and on some walks in the mountains, serving soup, hot dogs or weiner snitzel and hot drinks, beer or ice cream.

I'm not up to walking too far with my arrithmia, general unfitness & a bad foot at the moment. I can manage a max 4 miles very slowly over about 3 hours with lots of stops & provided i dont try to talk as I walk; but upward slopes & staircases i really stuggle with. So we take the cameras & just take our time walking, then rest & read afterwards.

We are not staying as high up as the hydro-dam but we are still up in a mountain valley about half hour post-bus ride away from it, & we have a lovely mountain view too from the balcony where I sit after our daily walk. There's sheep in the field opposite & a children's farm with Donkeys, goats, etc just down the road.

On the hydro-dam, we weren't very far from the hut in the picture (it can be seen on right hand side if you zoom in) & the paths still weren't fully open for walking due to the snow .... so we didn't risk it.

But we've done a couple of different "short" mountain walks nearer to where we are staying - downwards walks between cable cars & there were huts on the way, but most of our walking has been in the valley where we are staying, or we've taken a post-bus & train to have a walk around local towns.

Walking has been a littld bit more effort here but not too bad. My oxy level has been around 92% here ... at home it's usually 94% .... so there is a bit of a difference. Pulse rate / heart is between 58 & 61 at rest... a little higher than at home too. I didn't bring the BP machine so can't say if there's a difference there or not.

We've been here nearly two weeks & unfortunately it's almost time to leave.

And after all these mountains and fresh air I think i'm definately going to notice the pollution when I get back home given that I'm commuter distance from London.

When I was a child and camping with farmerโ€™s permission I remember seeing the reflection in a small blue lake of the Matterhorn touched with pink at sunrise. The HydroDam is called the Lunersee. It's in the Volarlberg region of Austria - between the Tyrol (Innsbruck Mountain Areas) and Switzerland. You get up to it via cable car (or you can walk).

Another lovely (but potentially dangerous) place near here to walk around is the town of Bludenz, because while you are walking you get lovely wafts of melted milk chocolate in the air ( like the smell when you melt chocolate to make cornflake cakes at Easter), because it is the home of the Milka Chocolate Factory.๐Ÿฌ

I bet you had a wonderful time biking through Europe!

--

Long ago the 1st time we drove in Germany we had to pull off the motorway as the traffic speed & cutting up was frightening & the sign posts didn't make sense as they only showed the very final destination of the road. My map reading really isn't good & so we wound cross-country zig-zagging all the way as I managed to match sign posts with village names on the map & head us in the general direction of where we needed to get to. Took hours, but the weather was nice, the car was a converable so we rolled the top down, and on the way somewhere up a mountain off a very windy road in the Black Forest we stopped at a biker's cafe for a coffee & had the best ever apple cake & custard. Never-ever been able to find the place again since!

yesterday I posted but it never appeared so Iโ€™m trying again!!! I know itโ€™s very early in the year to ask this but I need to sort it. As Iโ€™ve said in my previous posts I hate living alone and I need to get some recommendations from people who go away for Xmas in uk, I live in the south and donโ€™t want to travel far is there any older singles on here that have done this, last year was my first year totally alone at Xmas and it was awful bearing in mind I had just had my pacemaker after cardiac arrest which made things worse. Sorry itโ€™s not a happy jokey post but didnโ€™t know who else to ask as Iโ€™m sure many of us are in the same boat

Rainfern profile image
Rainfern in reply to Dogloverxthree

Youโ€™re taking first steps, reaching out, and you should be patting yourself on the back for that. Not an easy thing to do. I know that if I was on my own with AF life would not be at all easy, and you must still be grieving. Just an idea - I used to help out at Christmas for a local mental health charity and it was always a lovely atmosphere. Many tasks can be carried out sitting and even just an hour of your time would be appreciated. Itโ€™s also a great way to get to know other people. Nearer the time, it will also be worth looking to see what organisations are running Christmas lunches. You can let them know beforehand that you are recently bereaved and feel vulnerable in a group situation. Itโ€™s amazing how kind people can be. It sounds to me like your pacemaker is keeping you well now, so turning your mind to more social events is a great way forward. Wishing you good luck on your journey and hugs to you๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

Hi Doglover

May I suggest you obtain a brochure from local coach companies as they often offer a short- break away over Christmas/ New Year with a show & a dinner & other activities all arranged. Some will even pick up & drop off from home. Because you are going 'as a group' it's often easier to open conversations on the coach and / or over dinner or during an excursion / activity, than it is if you book into a hotel on your own. Also there's usually a Rep who manages to pull the group together.

You can ask lots of questions before you book such as whether they introduce you to each other, how many people go on their own, etc. to check if you feel the holiday is right for you.

Good luck

Little aside, maybe of interest: the song "Roll out the barrel" is originally Czech, a polka. The original lyrics are a regret of a love affair, rather a contrast to the lively tune.

Bit quiet on here today. Hot & humid here, but it's not supposed to rain.

1234_6 profile image
1234_6 in reply to Czech_Mate

Hi Czech_Mate

A beautiful Czech instrumental polka written in 1927 with Czech words first put to it in 1934. Then a recording first done in English in 1939.

I never realised that the first line is: "In Heaven, there is no beer, thatโ€™s why we drink it here!" I do wonder if that was in the original Czech wording, or just added in to the later English version recording by the boozy British ๐Ÿบ.

Anyway .... Roll Out the Barrell is ment to be an invitation to everone to enjoy the present moment and celebrate the joys of life with loved ones.

That's a very relevant sentiment to most Hearties - even if they're no longer allowed the Beer due to their Meds!

Czech_Mate profile image
Czech_Mate in reply to 1234_6

Despite the lively tune, the original Czech title was "Skoda Lasky", nothing to do with cars but a song regretting a romantic relationship. The chorus begins something like: Wasted is the love, I gave to you...

Without wishing to add to any controversy here, but I thought the post was put up for the attention of admin, moderators & the BHF. I don't understand why it was deleted before admin had the opportunity to look at the comments!

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers

Maybe it's worth your while contacting admin to ask them to consider this?

Tos92 profile image
Tos92

In reference to deletion of posts, I think if there was a feature where OPs could archive or save their posts away from the public instead of deleting them, that might be useful. This would also allow the OP to โ€œrepublishโ€ the post again publicly if they wished to. However, this would be a feature and issue which admin or the moderators will have look into in order to make it possible on the forum.

Also just to add, I donโ€™t think the post was deleted with any unkind intent. As the past has demonstrated, it has sometimes been better to delete posts which may escalate things in order to keep the peace. This may have been the case this time too.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to Tos92

But the post was there pretty much most of the weekend and was only deleted mid morning. I don't understand why the late deletion when it was FTA of admin etc to address certain points but was deleted before they even got to see it. That's what I'm struggling to understand. Hopefully admin will pick this up though & they'll be able to view the deleted post, it had some good comments that I hope admin will take on board.

Tos92 profile image
Tos92 in reply to Lezzers

I was going to say, Admin must have a way of looking at deleted posts. I assume that deleted posts get stored away in somewhere like a cache.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to Tos92

I'm guessing that is the case. I do know admin have the facility to view private messages so it would be a bit strange not to be able to view deleted posts.

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to Lezzers

Admin do not have the ability to view private messages but Healthunlocked maybe able to do so but would only do this in extreme circumstances :-) x

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to BeKind28-

HU are admin. But, I didn't say they do look at PM, I said they have the facility to do so, which they quite rightly should be able to do as they have a duty to keep members safe. Each group would have it's dedicated HU admin who 'supposedly' oversee their group. Looking/searching for a deleted post wouldn't be difficult, they would simply set the parameters they need i.e. group, day, username etc. Andy has said he'll contact admin about it, so hopefully they'll respond to him. ๐Ÿคž

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to Lezzers

Hello

I used to do Admin on the anxiety forums some years ago on here it worked differently back then as I described maybe they have changed how they do it now hopefully if they have he will get his post back :- ) x

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to Tos92

This platform is run by Health Unlocked their technicians etc decide and program in the format there are 100's of Communities on here all work the same

Organizations like BHF can apply to have a Community on here as they have done that gives them the ability to delete posts if needed stop anymore comments on posts but they cannot change the format of how it is set out like none of the other Communities can either only Healthunlocked could do that

Once a post has been deleted which thousands will be through all the Communities on here it would be near impossible for them to find it in the system and would take days if not longer to do so if it was even possible which they do not have the resources or time to do so before we decide for whatever reason we want to maybe delete our posts for good we have to think once we have it will be gone so BHF are powerless over this one :-) x

For me it gets harder and harder to get moving, but after a (very) slow start I always feel better. It's important not to overdo it, but I read somewhere on here to have one simple goal each day, then you can look back at the end of the day on something positive. Good luck.

Can't you just not worry about the posts if you've missed them? Personally if I get a notification and click on it and it says it has been deleted I just move on. I just assume that person had their own reasons for taking it down ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Hallo my ole Cronie ๐Ÿ˜Š. Believe it or not but I've never come across the term "cronies" before so I thought I'd look up the meaning of what appeared to me to be an old derogatory term ๐Ÿค”.

Was quite surprised ๐Ÿ˜ฎ, to find it only means "friends / pals / mates" !

Suffice to say I'm happy to have found "friends" on the Social Thread (and elsewhere within the Forum) and so I wish you, and everyone on the Social Thread a good day today too ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค— ๐Ÿ˜†.

I'm not aware of generally using derogatory words in my posts and apologise to everyone if I have.

As I said Cronies wasn't a word I'd ever heard before - it's very old fashioned so doesn't sound nice - which is why I looked if up.

And I'm not stressed at all today.

I've been out in the sunshine already, twice this morning and if was very nice. I did a lovely 4 mile walk (2 miles to the bakers to get fresh cooked bread when they opened at 7am, and 2 miles back again) before going for another walk to return my 24hour holter meter to the hospital, and walking back home again.

Hooe you have a good day.

Well done you. Good luck with the walking.

It's been a long time since I managed to do that much walking in a month - due to siactica, and a current foot injury as well as heart now.

Done several 25mile in a day walks in the past though.

Did 100 miles in a week once too on the Camino in Spain years ago. Would love to be able to do that again one day.

But at the moments its a a no-no (as 6 miles seems to be my max) & I will be in pain now with my foot for most of the day, after my walks this morning ๐Ÿ™„ so will be hobbling about for hours.
