Hi. I had a mild heart attack in October 2021, one stent fitted. Follow up echocardiogram ecg in April 2022, all good, told no further appointments unless there's any problems.

I am currently on Candesartan, Bisoprolol, Omeprazole, Aspirin and Rosuvastatin. No one has reviewed this since October 2022.

I am just wondering if there any vitamins you shouldn't take with a stent/heart meds. I've read folic acid? Which is in my multivitamins. What about omega 3? B12? I'm having major issues with a burning mouth and wanted to try supplements Does anyone what you can and can't take?

If you have an adequately healthy, varied diet then you usually don't need to take supplements at all.

Supplements aren't regulated in the same way as medicines, so what you see may not be what you get... and if you already have an adequate amount in your diet, you just end up making expensive urine.

If you decide you want to go down the supplements route regardless, speak to your local pharmacist, who will be able to advise on decent brands, as well as interactions with your current medication... which in most cases will ne reviewed after 12 months for most.

I was aware of that, but thought it was only after a year - which is why patients are supposed to have regular bloods done after this.

Just read the post again and have misread, I thought the medication started Oct 2022 so missed that.

Totally agree about getting bloods done to check!

They have been by both the GP and ENT, I've had blood tests and an endoscopy ENT said there is not much they can do with burning sensation in the mouth. It is burning mouth syndrome, lots of examples of what it could be but no real solutions.

There’s research that shows (can’t find it atm) that people who take multivitamins have shorter life spans than those who don’t. The researchers weren’t sure why.

Vitamins absorbed from food is usually more bioavailable than in a tablet, particularly as they are in combination with other minerals etc within the food.

Vitamin B12 is important for vegans. And Vit D for all of us in this country particularly from Oct to May. But eat loads of fresh vegetables. Avoid spices and other foods that will irritate your mouth. And try Difflam mouthwash.

I would definitely ask your doctor first. I do take Vitamin D drops in the winter as well as psyllium. However, I have to be careful when I take psyllium (2 hours before / after heart medication minimum) because it can interfere with uptake. Coq10 has tempted me but it's expensive. My mother swears by it but I think she falls under the "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" school when it comes to supplements...in her mind, if she's healthy, it's the supplements...

Vitamin D seems to be recommended by doctors widely and appears to be almost universally needed in winter in UK. There may be some debate as to if VitK should be taken with it but this does not seem to be widely thought to be essential as far as I can glean.

Quick query re psyllium as I’m interested in these things . Do you take that for the fibre or for cholesterol management or other? Do you take it as a tablet ?

Yes I was advised to take K2 with D3 as one helps the other get where its needed

I would consult your pharmacist or doctor first. Biso is a beta blocker . The omprasol is to counteract the distructive side effects of aspirin(blood thinner that can cause stomach ulcers etc) , you shouldn't be taking anti acids two hours either side of taking it.

Omega 3 yes safe enough, basically oily fish twice a week.

As for burning mouth again consult your doctor/dentist . It maybe a side effect if something your taking

Im on bisoprolol and I take an adult chewy multivitamin once a day. I take it in the evening away from my heart meds.

That seems to be an ace inhibitor lkke ramipril( they replaced mine with entresto a few weeks back.

As for the statin thats for cholesterol.

If you are b12 deficient you need to see your doctor as that can cause heart problems.

I have had this burning mouth problem for some months now. It started with a fungal infection side effect from a medication. This was treated and gone but I’m left with the burning, an oily petrol taste which affects my eating. Also a numbness in my tongue. My dentist gave me a gel to try and help the dryness to no avail. So I just live with it and hope it will go in time. I would be interested to see if you get any info for a successful treatment.

Unfortunately I have the burning mouth syndrome for 3 months now, nothing seems to work and none of the symptoms /severity/timing of the pain makes any sense. Lots of different ideas of causes from the medical profession menopause, auto immune, some medications, nerves, allergies, stress but no real help and what works for some does nothing for others.

I hate to be a prophet of doom but my wife has had burning mouth syndrome for many years, multiple dentist and doctors visits have come up with no solution. She has got to the state where she just lives with it now.

I have to admit I think that’s going to be the case with me. I’m also a Diabetic so the mouth problem just chokes me off eating which makes trying to balance food pretty rubbish. Onwards and upwards.

My pharmacist put me on a really good probiotic which after years of on and off burning mouth seems to have completely cleared it up. It is quite expensive but I only took the first month and it cleared it up. I only had to buy it once again in the last 3 years so it worked well for me. Ask a good pharmacist for advice.

The one I took was UDOs Choice, has to be kept in the fridge expensive but sure there are other brands.

I'm a vitamin person, been on high strength C, zinc, D and Omega 3 for many many years. Interestingly I added Omega 3 as they gave me Omacor for 1 year after my heart attack, apparently 1 year was the recommended max so when they stopped it I added the Asda version.

Hi, Duvetdays15,

I used to take several vitamins prior to my heart attack in March 2022. At the hospital, the doctors, ER doctor and cardiologist, told me to stop taking all of the vitamins.

I had a bone density test in May 2022, and I had osteopenia. My GP then prescribed vitamin D supplements—8,000 to 10,000 IUs per week. I am taking a 2,000 IU pill every other day in order to add to the 8K. In addition to lots of green, leafy vegetables and more exercise, the vitamin D supplements should help to slow the progression into osteoporosis. But check with your doctor first about whether you might need this supplement and for dosage. In my blood tests on February 14, 2023, my vitamin D level was in the low normal range.

Best wishes in sorting out what vitamins/supplements you might need to take.
