Seven months post bypass surgery l am literally dragging myself around so so tired and light headed blaming the side effects of metoprolol.

Well did l get a shock hmmm my iron count is so low l have iron deficiency anaemia. I have basically gone vegetarian trying not to eat animal anything that l am now anaemic. This sucks.

Just to add insult to injury my lipids were slightly raised ( and l mean slightly) and had to endure my gp lecturing me like l was some kind of naughty school girl. Not happy Jan.

Sometimes everything you do goes pear shape!!Hopefully you'll get the balance right and things will start to pick up.

Heather never a truer word said, especially after all this lot, my goodness. I think l went too far into vegetarian and my body be like hey where’s the meat? Balance is right word.

Hi Jedx, that's good you got a blood test and it explains a few things for you. Maybe a dietitian can help you figure out some adjustments to your diet. After reading this, I think I might be overdue for a blood test too!

I have the same iron issue since bypass I think it's quite common and I have been eating plenty of things with iron in them.

Turns out things like Omeprazole you take to protect from aspirin stop iron absorption plus a lot of the healthy foods if you read up also limit iron absorption

I was in the same situation following bypass.

Iron tablets take a long time to correct low iron levels.

I was given an iron infusion and it made a huge difference to my energy levels. That was about nine months after surgery.

Talk to your GP about an infusion.

Don’t worry l have to take iron tablets for one month then he will re-test if not enough difference seen he has said l will be having an infusion. It must be a thing l guess after such surgery.

Same here. After HA and stents and all the usual meds, I also got anemia. Mine was due to heavy monthly bleeding which started after I started taking the blood thinners and the consultant thought it could also be the gastro tablets I was taking stopping iron being normally absorbed. I had iron tablets and within 2 weeks I felt so much better. I was panicking that my heart was getting worse and was so relieved to find it was something easily fixed. It took a lot of visits to the GP though and a female doctor to make the link and do a ferritin bloodtest.

Hi Anne,

My gp wants me take iron tablets for l month then will reassess. If no improvement l will be having the infusion. I’m kicking myself cuz l should have told him that the tablets give me the runs so l don’t know how much l will absorb anyway. I hate that l forget to say things at the docs office.
