Diagnosed with afib and on blood thinners and Bisoprolol. I am lucky to get 5 normal heart beats in a row and then a pause of 1 beat, sometimes only 3 and then sometimes 10 or more before a pause.
My heart rate before treatment was around 60 at rest increasing with exercise. Now in the low 40`s.
4 years ago I was told I had ectopics with no treatment required. Then the symptoms were exactly the same. I think I need to consult my gp again.

I'm 77, a similar age to you, and have had permanent AF for over a year. I take 1.25mg Bisoprolol to keep my resting heart rate below 100 (85 right now) and Edoxaban (anticoagulant) to reduce stroke risk. I have never had any symptoms and neither the condition nor the medication have had any noticeable effect on how I feel or what I can do (I'm fairly active - I'm building a 10ft 6in high stud wall and putting up some plasterboard today).
The record of your irregular heartbeat would confirm AF, but if you have no symptoms then, other than the stroke risk, it isn't really worth worrying about and I personally wouldn't consider surgery at my age for something that isn't affecting my quality of life at all.
On the other hand, if your very low resting heart rate is a concern then talk to your GP about the dose of or need for the beta blocker.
l agree to see your GP. It could be the Bisoprolol. I cannot take that regularly as it makes my blood pressure go too low. I just use it as a pip which works for me. There are many different drugs, so if it is that, l hope your doctor will advise and possibly change your drugs. All the best.
