Throat irritation, cough and wheezing

Hi all! I have a bit of an odd one with a few issues I’m not sure are inter-related but they definitely make the entire situation worse. My husband started getting this tickly throat irritation over the past year. Every time he eats something mildly spicy (even pepper), his throat gets tickly and he starts coughing. The same thing happens at night as well. In addition, he has had a few colds/flu like episodes which ended pretty quickly but then resulted in wheezing. At the moment he has been wheezing and coughing for almost two months. Apart from that he feels fine - he still runs almost every day so the wheezing isn’t causing him any breathing difficulties. I’m confused whether this requires a medical assessment (he doesn’t think so) but the combination of cough after every meal & wheezing seems alarming to me.

Hello :-)

Personally if he is coughing and wheezing even not all the time it needs checking out and I would suggest to him he makes an appointment

I hope he will and if you have time you will let us know how he gets on :-) x

Hi AGreena

I have a friend who has this cough every morning

and he was told he had what is termed a “ post nasal drip” and it irritates the back of his throat so he coughs. He was told to take mylanta, the white liquid used for heartburn every night before bed as it lessens the post nasal drip secretions. Hope this helps, if not maybe your hubby should see the doctor. Good luck with it all

I had an annoying cough that lasted 3 years and I thought it was post nasal drip. Because during the virus everyone kept looking at me when I coughed I pursued it with the doctor. The first x ray didn’t pick it up but after a Ct scan I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis, so worth getting checked out.

it is significant. Sounds like gerd. Acid reflux causes those symptoms. See doc. Have raised pillows. No fatty foods in evening. Or white wine. Try a gaviscon tablet suck at bedtime.

I suggest that a visit to the doctor is a good idea. My main symptom was a bit of a tickely cough and occasionally wheezing. And I sometimes got the cough when lying in bed.

Give the doc a call just incase, my "cough" lasted for about 18 months then a hart attack.

Don't panic but take some action just in case.

Question what age is your Husband ? just my GP told me as you get older the muscles in your throat start to relax a little and can cause a cough whilst eating !!

Regards

He’s 34 so I presume he’s a bit young for the muscles to relax (although you never know).

I would agree with that !!

Thanks for your comment! I just checked what that was and I’m not sure it’s that as he doesn’t really have any other symptoms & it’s not affecting his workouts/no shortness of breath whatsoever. I originally thought it could be some sort of allergy. He’s speaking to a doctor on Saturday so hopefully they will do some tests!

update: he spoke to a GP today and she seems to think it’s asthma so she prescribed some inhalers to see if that does the trick. She was a bit baffled by the spicy food thing so if the inhaler doesn’t do the trick, he needs to go back so they try a few more things. I’m hoping it’s really this and nothing more sinister going on but she didn’t seem particularly worried.
