Ramipril - dry tickly cough

Hello,

I have developed a dry tickly cough 8 weeks after starting my meds for an NSTEMI in January this year. I have read this is a common side effect of tacking Ramipril. Has anyone switched to an alternative that does not cause the cough, i will talk to my GP about switching but wondered if this was well known.

thanks in advance to anyone sharing their experience and have a great day.

danny.

Sorry to hear that you had an NSTEMI, hope you're recovering well.

I had to swap from Ramipril because of the cough, to Candesartan. Not had a problem with coughing on that.

(as an aside.. I was originally on amlodipine but I had unpleasant side effects on that, so they put me on the ramipril. It's third time lucky for me with the Candesartan!)

thank you, Candesartan was mentioned by my rehab nurse.

I was on Enalapril which also caused me to have a really bad, persistent cough so was switched to Amlodipine. No more cough. Apparently the cough is a side effect unique to ACE inhibitors such as Ramipril and Enalapril so my GP said Calcium Channel Blockers like Amlodipine don't have that side effect. Good luck I hope they find the right meds for you.

Lisinopril had the same effect on me a really vile persistent choking cough. Apparently drugs ending in 'pril' seem to have this effect. It was first thing on the paperwork in the box. It took about a week for the cough to decline and i have never had it since. Mind you, they are still looking for one that suits me but the cough has gone.

Hi, I too had the cough on Ramipril. It apparently affects 1 in 10 who use it, and my GP said they prescribe it initially as it is cheapest, but will switch meds if the cough becomes an issue. I was switched to Losartan and the cough is no longer there. ATB!

hi. It’s a common side-effect of Ramipril. I was switched to Losartan. Good luck!

I had the same kind of cough with perindopril. It was driving me mad and keeping me awake so my GP moved me onto candersartan. I was warned that it could take up to four weeks and maybe longer for the cough to go away. After four weeks, it is much better and almost gone away.

My cough started within 2 weeks of taking ramipril. The nurse changed me to Losartan and it took another 3 weeks weeks for the cough to go. I am 3-4 months post heart attack and losartan working well and no coughing at all .

I took Ramipril and it gave me the worse cough I have ever had. I was switched to Losartan which was fine.

Hi following heart attack Jan 22, I developed very severe cough after taking ramipril for 8 days. I stopped taking ramipril but the dry cough continued for another 10 weeks which caused scarring on my lungs which was so severe, I was seeing consultant for lung cancer. My condition gradually got better when the cough finally went. Several CT and PET scans later the scarring has completely gone. I refused to take ramipril until recently my GP suggested LOSARTAN. I have been okay with this but it can make me drowsy. I take it in the evening to help with this. More iimportantly, No Cough! Do bear in mind that the cough can continue for up to 10 weeks after stopping ramipril and other drugs in the same category have the dry cough as a side effect. Good luck - hope this helps

I've been on Ramipril since January 2022 when it was prescribed by my Cardiologist for my high blood pressure. It made me cough badly, so he doubled my dose and the cough stopped and hasn't come back. He wouldn't change it for another blood pressure tablet as he said it was the best for me.

hi - sounds like we both had a procedure at same time (my HA was late Jan 2024).

I have the cough and the Hospital Dr said it was likely to be Ramipril. Yet to change it, as I want the diaorhea that I have way to often in the morning to be addressed first, which is to do with stomach liners.

The reference that the cough caused scarring is very scary and made me think I need to get this also resolved.

Good luck

I hope your feeling better. Was a real shock to me but feeling more acceptance now. Cough is horrible, keep waking up in the night and then feel really tired the next day. Trying to go the gym and for walks but this has slowed me right down. Have just put in a repeat prescription and asked for a change, they will phone me Monday so fingers crossed.
