can statins cause a runny nose ? since being on Rosuvastatin my nose constantly runs or is blocked it’s driving me mad, I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence though.

I've checked the patient information leaflet for that statin and runny nose isn't mentioned, but non-allergic rhinitis is listed as a common side effect with other brands of statin.

This can also be a side effect with aspirin and beta blockers. It might be worth a discussion with your GP about switching to a different statin or whether you need to be taking them at all.

that’s kind of you to check for me. I’m on aspirin and also bisoporol so it may be one of those. I haven’t had a face to face with cardiologist yet just phone call following my ultrasound. I will mention it when l get to speak to her

Hi Kingsnorth,

I too am on a statin, aspirin and Bisoprolol and can confirm that my “runny nose” only started when Bisoprolol was introduced to the equation. Both my GP and cardiologist confirmed that it was a well documented side effect. In my case mostly when outdoors. Otherwise no complaints, take care.

thanks for your reply l am on Bisoporol, Rosuvastatin and Aspirin and after reading comments on this forum posted a few years back it seems I’m not alone with the runny nose. It’s so blinking annoying. My eyes water as well but we won’t go into that! I will speak to my cardiologist to see if l really need to be on these meds mine were prescribed as a preventative measure as l have plaque in my arteries

I also suffer from a runny nose and watering eyes, very annoying but keep taking the Aspirin, candesartan, bisoprolol, and statins. It's annoying but stopping the meds is a no no.👍

I was of the impression that ramipirl is the medication that causes the running nose or cough .

Hi

I'm on the same meds as you and my runny nose is quite embarrassing sometimes. It's weird, don't get any notice and it just flows freely wherever I am and whoever I'm talking to. It's just like water dripping out of a tap. Oh well, that's the least of our problems I guess.

Keep the Kleenex handy!

l know, l now don’t leave home without tissues in my bag, up my sleeve and in the car. I struggle when weeding the garden as my head is tipped forward it’s a real problem. I might try some antihistamines to see if that helps x

Yes but I think it is the bisoprolol thankfully not all the time.

How long have you been on these meds? It can take a couple of months for your body to settle down with them. If it’s been longer, then ask about switching the Biso to Carvedilol, or the Rosuva to Atorvastatin. Not both at the same time, as you won’t know which was causing the problem x

l have been on them over a year l was initially prescribed atorvastatin but because it caused leg pain it was changed to Rosuvastatin but as l say l have been on it for over a year. I’m hoping to speak to my cardiologist at some stage so l will mention it but having said that l have only spoken to her once in over a year and that was briefly on the phone when she advised l take statins and aspirin because of moderate plaque buildup. I have had quite a few tests including a CT angiogram which was over 3 months ago and still not had any results 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for posting this.

You have answered a question for me by asking it! I take Rosuvastatin, Asprin and Bisoprolol and my nose is like a tap!

I blame hot drinks, eating, the cold, the heat, central heating anything really. Now I know I’ll just have to carry those tissues! I’m otherwise happy on my meds and will not stop or change them. It’s something I will have to put up with.

Someone asked about antihistamines. I take them prescribed for my eczema Fexofenadine 180mg so obviously they have no effect on the runny nose, for me anyway.

Have a Happy New Year and a healthy 2023

Regards

Maisie

Hi Maisie the same question was asked a few years ago l only found it yesterday and the same answers were given. l suppose it's something we will have to live with. l have cetirizine antihistamines that l should take for something unrelated l will start taking them to see how it goes. best wishes and happy healthy new year x
