Diltiazem side effects

Hello everyone I hope everyone is keeping warm and safe,

Has anyone had serious side effects from taking Diltiazem for blood pressure. I have had horrendous hot flushes and sweating and weakness in my limbs since taking it. I have spoken to my gp as it was affecting me daily, just wondered if anyone else had experienced problems. Thanks as ever, Judi

I get insomnia and loss of appetite since starting Tildiem 300LA (diltiazem) I'm so tired yet cannot sleep, either I can't get to sleep or if I do, I keep waking frequently through the night and waking early.

I am a cold soul so don't find the hot flushes much of a problem!

On the plus side my BP is lower and my AF/flutter is under control.

Hello Cat04, so glad the meds are working that’s the important thing. I hope the side effects lessen for you. Take care, Judi

I have been taking high doses of slow release Diltiazem for 10 years.I don't have any problems.

Perhaps ask your GP for an alternative medication to help manage your blood pressure?

Thanks Milkfairy, my meds have just been changed so I hope things improve now. I was quite poorly a few days ago and ended up in A and E. Thankfully i was checked over and was okay. I just feel very weak but getting better. Take care, Judi

Thank you, I hope they work their way out of my system in a few days. I think it’s probably one of the worst reactions I have had, I tried to persevere but had to give up in the end. Fortunately the GP I spoke to was very kind and helpful. Have a lovely Christmas, Judi x

Hopefully this does not apply to you. In the past, a Registrar put me on it without checking for Heart Failure (specifically: the Left Ventricle Ejection Fraction LVEF). It was in my file that this LVEF was low. The Diltiazem made it worse.

With Diltiazem always ask to be checked for Heart Failure.

I had a horrible autoimmune response that started at day 14 of the meds. This is a rare but not uncommon response that begins with a rash. However, this does not sound like what you are experiencing. Good luck!

Thanks so much Wildie1, I really appreciate your reply and I hope you are okay now. My whole body was in pain and very weak, I woke in the morning and my hands felt like they were full of arthritis, which is a bit extreme but I can only imagine it’s what arthritis might feel like! My legs have been very weak and the hot flushes horrible which resulted in a panic attack. I fortunately spoke to a very understanding and kind doctor who listened and hopefully the meds I am now on for my bp will have much less side effects. As I said I do hope you are okay and I hope you have a lovely Christmas. Judi
