Hello. My husband had spirometry tests when he was first prescribed Bisoprolol due to his asthma. It showed he didn’t have asthma! The technician said that didn’t mean there wasn’t something going on with his lungs or that he didn’t have asthma that came and went, but he didn’t have asthma just then. The Bisoprolol didn’t have any effect on his respiratory system. Perhaps ask for spirometry so measure objectively how your lungs are performing with &without Bisoprolol if you haven’t had tests already.

Best of luck in getting it sorted out.

that’s interesting I have only had a peak flow is that the same only I score high in that 650 , did they come to a conclusion with your husbands issue I take it he had breathing issues

No further tests, just carry on with his inhaler as it improves his peak flow.

I'm on verapamil because I have asthma that's the only medication for palpitations they could prescribe and supprised your asthma wasn't taken into account also??

I am surprised and now I can’t get even to speak to a cardio person and I am just left on repeat prescription

I'm so sorry that sounds terrible 😞. Hope your able to get an adjustment to your meds and hopefully one that doesn't exacerbate your breathing! 😔

my Cardiologist said a big no to Bisoprolol as I’m a life long chronic asthmatic..

yes it’s like my asthma was missed

I have asthma and was prescribed 2.5mg bisoprolol. Some beta blockers work directly on the heart and some affect the lungs also. Have a chat with your cardiologist to find the right combo for you. It also depends on whether your asthma is well controlled.

that’s my trouble I can’t even get to speak to a cardio doctor I haven’t seen one since June when I was discharged. I have complained to Pals amd asked for there help as I have been left on the prescription but even my GP isn’t really sure if it is long term or not or when I will have a review

There are alternatives - BHF suggests diltiazem and verapamil - your GP should be able to change the prescription and if unsure should check with the cardiologist - saying they are not sure is not good enough, it's their responsibility to sort it out

i know it's hard right now with the pressures on our health services, but you know that beta-blockers are not the best thing for your asthma and if this gets out of control it will affect your heart too, so the medics need to get this right for you to avoid complications

get assertive with them, it's in all your interests to get this right now😀

..... and while you are at it, when was your last full lung function assessment? i don't know who is supervising your asthma care but it's important to have occasional checks as treatments can be tweaked or changed if your lung function changes

as you are aware, your heart and lungs work as a team and are really important !!!!!😀

I have never had a lung assessment only a peak flow with the asthma nurse

fishonabike profile image
fishonabike in reply toNLGA

if you are taking medication to control your asthma you should have a full lung function assessment - a practice nurse can often do the initial testing in the surgery, if they have the right training - but the rest is done at a chest & lung department - ask your GP about it

i had this done a couple of years ago after reporting breathing problems to my GP - i had occasional allergic asthma which was helped by a ventolin inhaler and antihistamines - but this breathlessness felt different to what i experienced as a result of the allergies - i was diagnosed with asthma and very mild COPD, given a different inhaler and have not looked back - i have not needed ventolin since then, no more breathlessness and i feel bettter than ever

get a full assessment soon

there's more information about diagnosing and treating asthma here: nhs.uk/conditions/asthma/di...

i don't know when you were diagnosed but these days it's usual to have more than a peak-flow test to confirm it

I think years ago just diagnosed on symptoms now a peak flow but my peak flow is high amd they say my asthma is under control yet if my heart echo was good my CT on tne lungs was good why am I breathing so heavy

i can't answer that - but i would push for an alternative to the beat-blocker asap for starters

That is interesting. Have been on 5mg Bisoprolol twice a day for 10years.- Parox.Afb. - plus other BP meds. A good few years ago I started having sudden bouts of wheezing when exhaling which would stop if I cleared my throat. GP put me on inhaler as required. Possible connection to the hiatus hernia/acid reflux problems I occasionally get. Fast forward post Covid I mentioned wheezing again at a blood test. Booked for spirometry test. Now told I have Asthma and on inhaler twice a day for 3 months then another test. No one has mentioned any connection to meds. I have never smoked. Will mention this connection?at next test.

I am just getting an inhaler prescribed for as my bisoprolol dose was increased my Long Covid breathlessness got worse, never given a spirometer test….bit difficult when appointments are all by phone! I had commented that I wasn’t too keen on taking yet another drug just for side effects but not offered another drug to bisoprolol ( I am already on 5 BP drugs due to LC symptoms).

I was on bisoporol when diagnosed with asthma. I looked it up and my research said that bisoporol was cardio selective so less risky to asthmatics than other beta blockers. There is a study on the subject by somebody called morales, you can Google it.

My lung consultant was OK with bisoporol.

So well worth doing some research and having a chat through with your doctor.
