Bisoprolol

I’m confused about side effects from Bisoprolol. I had a Bypass which worked out fine. Later I had surgery to clear an Artery in my leg. The pain in my calf muscles disappeared and I could walk much further. However after a mile me feet started to go to sleep at the same distance every day in both feet not just the leg I had sorted. My nose runs when I eat and I dream a lot. I can live with all of that fine I’m just trying to find what’s causing my feet to sleep. They say the blood supply seems fine and I don’t feel it any other time.

Are you sure it’s not your footwear - maybe try wearing different shoes to test?

If you do narrow it down to Bisoprolol it’s important you inform your doctor as they will need to log it with the manufacturer as a new reported side effect.

No it’s not foot ware, there are known side effects

Apologies didn’t connect feet “ going to sleep” with numbness which as you correctly say is a documented side effect.

Morning

For me runny nose, cold hands and feet and dizzy spells. But they have improved ectopic beats somewhat which terrify me!

I get a variety of side effects, some went away after a month or 2, others stayed or changed. I think it is an inflammatory response in various parts of my body, hard to know. Pins and needles in hands or feet, or feet going to sleep or burning pain in feet, these went. Runny nose, sinus issues and blocked eustachian tube in ear remain unfortunately. Also odd chest pains and muscle tension or aches in varying parts of my body which come and go - very common with me. Some breathlessness. Plus interfering with sleep (insomnia). All these are more livable with now that I'm on the lowest dose possible to manage my heart (AF). (I have had to experiment with dose using a pill cutter and when in the day to take it.).

Thanks, will try and reduce dose

Let us/ me know how it goes reducing, it should help, I'll be interested to know how you get on and hope it does improve the side effects. Unfortunately bisoprolol does have a number of side effects for a lot of people. There are several posts about bisoprolol and its side effects on the site. I was initially put on 2.5 mg twice a day. But I found I can manage my AF on just 1/2 a tablet (ie 1.25mg) once a day, so 1/4 of the dose the cardiologist put me on originally. And he is fine with my reduction.

Did you notice much difference when you reduced the dose?

Hi - yes a huge difference even just reducing it a tiny bit. (I am pretty sensitive to medications always). So having just half of a 2.5mg tablet in the morning instead of 2 x 2.5mg (I also tried just 2.5mg in the morning or 1.25mg twice daily, - I tried all combinations to reduce my blocked ear and insomnia). 1.25 in the morning is the least I can get away with that keeps the ear blockage (fluid in eustachian tube) and insomnia down enough that I can sleep a few hours. I am still often awake til 3 or 4am until I fall asleep but a few hours is better than none. Also the higher dose gave me terrible day time restlessness. I really dislike bisoprolol. Quite a few people on the site recommended trying nebivolol as an alternative but I decided to stick it out with bisoprolol as I'm due an operation on my mitral valve to repair it, and did not want to change medications. I am hoping I can come off it after a valve repair...

So you could try reducing the dose if you feel safe to do so with your condition, I don't know why you are taking it, are you prone to an irregular heart beat? You may be best talking to your GP if he or she is understanding that you would like to try reducing it. How much do you take daily? I know someone who had a heart stent put in after blocked artery and he has a daily dose of 2.5mg to maintain things. It depends on your individual situation. I take it for AF and I can feel when I'm in AF or not so I can judge the dose. But quality of life matters, so balancing all factors is important.

I get a tightness in one of my legs in the calf every time I walk. I’ve had it all checked out for clotting and restricted arteries with scans but nothing came back. Never thought it could be side effect of bisoperol. For me I take 1.25 in the morning and 2.5 at night. I take all my candestartin at night too. These medicines wipe me out when I take in the day. I know HF causes tiredness but sometimes I wonder how much the medicines do too.

I had pain in the calf of my right leg. Got slowly worse. The only way they can really tell is doing an angioplasty. Seems like something is affecting the muscle in your leg it may be lack of oxygen to the muscle which is blood flow or maybe side effects. Would persevere and find out.
