my husband had open heart surgery 9 weeks ago which went well, the operation was over 8 hours. Since then he has numbness in his one hand. In the last few weeks he’s had pains in his hip and upper leg. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Thank you

Hi CowansDon't know if it's relevant, but I had my surgery last November and I still have a slight numbness in my right thigh, following the attachment of the heart lung machine. It's steadily improving.

Might be worth asking his cardiologist or cardiology nurse, to see if there is a logical cause.

All the best 👍

Dear Cowans

A warm welcome to you and your husband to the forum, I hope that it helps the pair of you as it has me and many others.

I had a triple bypass last sept and I still have a numbness down my left arm and into the hand.

I was told that a certain nerve may have been damaged and that hopefully in time the full feelings will come back.

It is not debilitating for me, just odd.

As for the pains in your husbands hip and upper leg then that needs to be investigated, is it from the leg that a vein was harvested out of? Then mine still aches { leg not hip } .

It is something to mention to the DR/Cardiologist on his next visit.

Please keep us informed

Hello when we are on the table for hours and hours we don’t move so some times all the joint, muscle and so on can get stiff or damaged slightly. I had really bad neck pain for 3 weeks post op my head must have been in a strange angle for hours plus the fact they put your arms above your head to keep them out the way that’s not going to do them a lot of good after 7 to 8 hours.I suffer with sciatica which comes and goes what a lot of people don’t realise is this is generated from L4 L5 in you spine nothing really to do with the leg.

I’m not saying that’s your husbands problem it may be if he lay in an strange position either in the op or it’s a nightmare to get comfortable after the op in bed for weeks, a test for this is put your leg out straight then get someone to push your toes up towards your knee if the pain increases in the leg then it’s the nerve and he needs to reposition his back and work on some exercises.

Hope he gets better soon.
