Hi All,

Just talking out loud if that’s ok?

Posted last week I had finally got the date for bypass (triple), pre op all went ok, all very professional helps puts you at ease.

The Nurse was great and talked myself & the Wife through everything which did open our eyes and at one stage we both went very quiet.

Well here we are the night before admission and I am really starting to fell it now NERVES ARE kICKING IN- wow, querying to myself have they got this right?

I’m sure it will all be fine and there are a lot who have gone through this stage

Sorry I know just waffling on a bit now - well all being well will drop a post in a few days time

Thanks for all the support leading up to the day 😉

Just wanted to wish you good luck, you will fine. Just remember all the instructions you are given take it easy when you get home. You will get there, and your life will be back on track. Keep doing the breathing exercises they help more than we think. Post when you feel ready let us know how you are doing.

Best wishes Pauline

That’s great, just remember you might feel good but take it easy. Your emotions will be all over the place, part of it is your brain is still processing what has happened to you. Plus a huge dose of anesthetiser and some very exotic drugs take longer than we think to work it’s way out of our system. Keep doing those breathing exercises and the coughing one, I called them huffing and puffing 😂 your lungs take a hit as they collapse when we are on bypass so they need a bit of help filling all those little pockets up again.

Listen to your body if it says I am tired you rest, building your stamina back is so important, but slowly does it.

Welcome to the heart mended road.

Wishing you a great recovery.

Pauline

Hi golfswinger. Pauline is right, you’ll be back on track before you know it. I think the thought of what is about to happen can be worse than the actual procedure itself. When you get home, just take things at your own pace, but be aware that you will have days when it can be overwhelming. That’s usual. Just give everyone a shout on here and hopefully, we can pick you up. I’m going to need the same in a few weeks for my surgery so the good thing is, most people here have been through it or are just about to. You will feel better and life will begin again before you know it. Best wishes

Open heart surgery is a major procedure so of course it carries risks, but it can also deliver the most tremendous rewards.

My bypass produced benefits that I can only describe as transformational, the effects of angina had crept up without me really noticing, but once the clock had been re-set by the bypass I felt twenty years younger, waking every morning full of energy and eager to meet the day.

The first six or eight weeks after the operation can be quite challenging, but it's really important to do your breathing exercises five or so times each day, to go for your daily walk (the objective is to build up to a 30 minute brisk walk after six weeks), and to do your daily shoulder roll exercises. If you stick with the discharge programme that the hospital will lay out for you, then you'll soon be back on the golf course and swinging better than you have for a long, long time!

Good luck!

Best of luck to you ! I had a quad bypass in January this year. My golf handicap has come down from 14 to 10 after my operation. Do the cardio rehab and keep active!

Hi Golfswinger. My hubby and I had 'the talk' ! at his pre op in October 2018 but the cardio surgeon was brilliant when he came to see us after. He said "I can do this with my eyes closed and sometimes I do!! You'll wake up feeling like a new man".He was right! My hubby had a quad bypass, was in the Intensive Care Unit for 12 hours, was transferred to a High Dependency Unit then and was on a ward after that. He had the op on a Monday and was back home by Friday.

I made the mistake of buying Sky Sports for the hospital TV over his bed but he was discharged that same day!!!

Paracetamol very occasionally was all the pain medication he needed.

Keep us posted. You'll probably have lots of other questions when you finally escape from hospital. Most of the lovely people on this forum have had similar operations and have the T shirts to prove it.

Love and hugs. Jan xxx
