Fasting glucose

I was diagnosed with coronary heart disease on 28th June. I have 69-65 % luminal stenosis in my lad . I am having an invasive angiogram on Monday. I started taking Atorvastatin 20 mg and Ezetimibe 10 mg on 28th June. I tested my fasting blood glucose yesterday and it was 7.8. Has anybody had high glucose since they started on statins?

Hello :-)

I have never read a post that statins have caused this before

Have you read the side effects if they can ?

You could always phone your pharmacist and ask if this could be a side effect ?

Good luck with your angiogram on Monday I hope everything goes ok :-) x

Thanks very much for your reply. I did read that sometimes high blood sugar can happen with statins but I’m not going to panic just yet I’ll do a couple of more readings and then if it continues I’ll check with my doctor. I was just curious if anybody else had the same problem. Hope you are doing okay.

Good luck with the angiogram on Monday German14. I'm afraid I haven't heard anything about statins raising glucose levels but I know I can't take them at all as they cause major problems with my liver. I'm on an Ezetimibe trial which I started at the end of April and will have blood tests at the beginning of August to see how they're working for me.

Thanks for your reply. I was diagnosed with NAFLD so my cardiologist is trying me on a lower dose of statins. In a few weeks I’ll be having a blood test to check that everything is okay with my liver function. It would be great if the Ezetimibe was enough on its own. Hopefully it will suit you.

My husband started 40 mg Atorvastatin last November and has just been diagnosed as pre diabetic which came as a total shock. He is changing his diet increasing exercise , and if that does not reverse it he will discuss stat in use with the GP. Wish he had been warne d about it, I found out only by looking o nline

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully your husband will be able to keep his sugar levels low by diet and exercise. Nobody wants to be On any more medication unless it is absolutely necessary. I’m going to keep an eye on my glucose levels and go to my GP in a few weeks.

Good luck for monday with your angiogram. I also have a angiogram this tuesday also. Im just confused as to what will happen, i know i have 2 of the 3 coronary arteries blocked up to 69% and the other blockages are 25-49%. Do they put stents in on the day of the angiogram or is it done on another date? Your input would be greatly appreciated .

My cardiologist informed me that if he thought stents were necessary that they would be done at the same time as the angiogram. Hope everything goes well with yours.

It really depends on the cardiologist and the hospital, some hospitals don't do stents. But you are in good hands, whatever they decide, will be in your best interests. Take care. Moni

Hope everything went well with your angiogram yesterday. I had mine on Monday. It showed that my LAD only had 20% narrowing instead of the 60 to 65% which showed up on the CT cardiac scan. So they didn’t have to put stents in. I was so relieved. I hope your outcome is as good as mine.

I've been on statins since 2011 and diabetic, I haven't had that problem with statins. But everyone is different, it might be that the statin doesn't suit you. All the best with your angiogram. Take care. Moni
