Concerned about latest Cholesterol Results

I am a 35 year old female in the UK weighing 145lbs. Had lipid profile done as part of routine bloods. These results have gone up since my last test 6 months ago.

***Please note I DID NOT fast for this test as I was unaware the GP was doing my cholesterol ***

I have also done the American conversion.

• Cholesterol - 5.6 mmol/L (216.55 mg/dl)

• Triglycerides - 2.51 mmol/L (222.3 mg/dl)

• HDL - 1.33 mmol/L (51.43 mg/dl)

• LDL - 3.1 mmol/L (119.88 mg/dl)

• Non HDL Cholesterol - 4.3 mmol/L (166.28mg/dl)

• Cholesterol/HDL ratio - 4.2 mmol/L (162.4mg/dl)

This has increased since my last test in June. Admittedly my diet is not very good.

As I struggled with severe anxiety I have just come back from appointment with GP who has told me not to worry and to change my diet and retest with a FASTING test in 3 months. She stated Statins are not a good idea at the moment for me.

Looking for any help! Please no horror or frightening stories because I am beside myself.

Listen to your GP! Try what the GP says and see what you can achieve yourself!

I was in the exact same boat as you when I had my tests back in 2019. All my numbers were high and my diet was also not very good. I made an effort to eat much healthier starting at the end of October of this year. I was tested at the end of November 2020 and from just one month of changing my diet my numbers drastically improved. My Cholesterol went from 245mg/dl to 157mg/dl and my Triglycerides went from 206mg/dl to 152mg/dl so with some diet changes you should be able to improve your numbers fairly quickly!

Sanjay Gupta on u tube gave the best tutorial on cholesterol I have ever heard . He is a cardiologist from York and he really made sense of the whole cholesterol problem. I really suggest you have a look on utube on his advice on cholesterol . I can’t take Statins and the worry about not being able to take them bothered me. At last I found someone who really knows their subject

There’s room for improvement here, but these really aren’t that bad at all: it’s definitely not a reason to panic, nor would statins be appropriate at this point. By your own admission your diet is poor, so the obvious solution is to overhaul your diet, exercise regularly, and then get retested after a couple of months of healthier living and see where you are. I’d also advocate fasting tests as these do make a difference: I told the GP this having had a non-fasting test that came back squiff and she dismissed it, only for a letter from my endocrinologist to arrive insisting she do a repeat fasting test as I have a number of conditions and regular treatments that put me at increased risk of cardiovascular problems, so the threshold for endo wanting me on statins is lower than normal. Sure enough, my numbers were still wonky, but not as wonky as they had been non-fasting.
