Hot sweats

Hello I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this one. Recently diagnosed with Ischaemic heart disease and always tended to blame my hot flushes on the menopause but as I don’t get them anymore in bed I’m wondering if it’s heart related as in anxiety/worry. I only sweat on my face and head - not a great look! Happens at home, in shops and I’m certain situations talking to people. Could it be a side effect of beta blockers and statins……or is it my menopause??

Thank you OutoftheBlues for your response. I seem to be questioning everything at the moment as this diagnosis has come out of the blue and everything has happened very sudden. I’ve lost confidence in what I am able to do and can’t do. The menopause seems to have a massive affect on women’s health and perhaps HRT could have helped prevent my heart situation but like your wife’s friend it’s too late for that now. But thanks for your reply.

Strange you should post this. I am through menopause luckily with no major effects. But three days ago had two episodes of hot flushes and then it happen a day later. I was not anxious I was just sat down knitting. I did wonder if it was the beginning of another side effect of my drugs as pharmacist just changed statin brand with last prescription pick up waiting to see it it was a short term adjustment in my body or if it becomes a thing I need to report to my GP.

Hi, I am 61 and went through the menopause 10 years ago with no issues or hot sweats. Since having my HA last year I have the “hots” which last only a few minutes when my overall temperature rises to the point my husband can feel me radiating it is like a hot flush but I dont sweat profusely . This is mostly at night but does happen in the day as well . I am convinced it is one of the drugs, but have no idea which one!

Many thanks to those of you who have replied. Although not nice to have so many worries and symptoms, it’s good to know I’m not the only one and it’s perhaps my “new normal”. Stay strong everyone xxx

I just wanted to add my experience of night sweats just incase it might be helpful. I've only recently started medications due to recent problems and I'm still in the processof various investigations. I know medication isn't the cause of my sweats. I sailed through the menopause relatively easy compared to some. Im 64 and was experiencing night sweats regularly summer & winter. I did some research and some experimenting and sometimes night sweats can be caused by eating before bed. I now leave 4 hours before eating and bedtime. It has certainly helped me. I no longer have night sweats but I still get really hot. More recent research has suggested that my mattress topper might be contributing to over heating during the night due to them absorbing body heat then releasing that heat in the night as it has nowhere to go. Im currently looking at changing my mattress topper. As I said this is just my experience.

Thank you Villagelife and everyone who has replied to share your experiences of these pesky sweats….day or night. I did used to get them during the night but now - no longer. Just during the day - I think they’re related to anxiety and perhaps not the medication. Still trying to get used to the meds which also cause a little bit of dizziness but hopefully I can get this resolved when I next speak to GP. Thanks again for sharing your stories re the hot flushes. 😥

I had an early menopause after a hysterectomy and I occasionally get hot flushes that are so intense my hair is wet. It’s most unpleasant. This has only come on since I was diagnosed with heart failure in 2016.

I’ve had to dry my hair three times today already. ☹️☹️

Hi , I am currently sitting with a neck fan on , one attached to a lamp on my right side so it blows on my head and across from me a dyson fan on at maximum. I’m in menopause as well , I was trying to get ready this morning, shower dryed make up hair done and I just couldn’t keep going even with a fan on in the bedroom. I often wonder if the medication makes it worse especially as I’m on 10 mg of bisoprolol as well as all the usual medication. I’m also not allowed hrt which is driving me totally insane, some days like today , after putting on a full face of very expensive make up and feeling it slide off my face , I could cry . I hope you find the answers and share them cus I’m demented with it as well .

Hot Showers do make you sweat afterwards for a while. Maybe turn down the temperature a bit? I sweat a lot at night and often wake up with my face pouring with swart. Not pleasant. I don't know if it's the menopause or the AF or a bit if both. I can't go to bed after a shower without half an hour to cool down first. I often sweat badly after a cup of tea. It's embarrassing but I have learned to live with it. I do think some of it may be heart related though as I went through the menopause about ten years ago.

Yeah my showers aren’t hot at all cus I know I’ll suffer afterwards. I also think a lot of it is to do with heart disease as well . My ef is 40% and I get knackered doing wee things like walking to the local shops etc .

I have never found out what causes my sweating. Certainly not menopause as I had a hysterectomy in 1988. Mine is always at night. I wake up absolutely soaked with mightwear sodden too. Like you it's only my neck and forehead.

After 34 years? I'm now 74. It's impossible.

I’ve asked for hrt twice and was told no . I was out for breakfast last Sunday and started sweating fanning myself blotting my face and a lady on another table seen me , as we were leaving she told me to get the patches for hrt , I said I can’t due to heart medication, she told me she had a heart attack in December last year and is still on the patches . I’m going to call them up and hopefully speak to my own gp instead of some random one , she’s a woman so hopefully I’ll get something from her . This isn’t living though and I’d definitely take the risk of hrt right now .!

I recently started HRT again at the age of 68 with angina (waiting for tests to determine if it’s microvascular or vasospastic ). After a lot of research I had quite a job convincing the gp to let me trial the patches. She reluctantly prescribed them for me. It’s been a game changer as I no longer overheat during the night or have a flush during the day. My angina episodes are shorter in duration too. A win win for me. Fingers crossed that I can convince my gp to continue HRT.

Do your research and badger the female gp to get your life back! Good luck

The lack of interest by the medical system has been shocking, that's true but he sweating hasn't gone on for all that time. I had 10 years of HRT but it's 20 years since my hormones started to vanish and I had none of the sweating before about 7 or 8 years ago, in fact no menopause symptoms at all and of the older members of the family that I remember; mum, aunts, grandparents etc, none of them had any problems. OK so back in the day, no one talked about "women's problems" ( when my great aunt got ovarian cancer it just wasn't mentioned) but my mum would have told me if she'd had problems herself.

I am 50 and suffering with the perimenopause and the hot sweats and anxiety are the worst for me. I had a heart attack 3 1/2 years ago and am on them standard heart drugs - atorvastatin Asprin bisoprolol and ramipril. I have spoken with my Dr and he was very understanding and has made a referral for me to a menopause clinic at our local Hospital. I too thought the answer for HRT would be no but he said although I have certain risks not to rule out completely. Fingers crossed there is something I may be able to have - even just to control the hot sweats!

I do think the sweating may be heart related as it's one of the symptoms of a heart attack. I didn't realise but it's made me think. I put it all down to the menopause and like you I couldn't take HRT. Maybe ask your GP again?

Hi I’m through the menopause but I get hot sweats and cold sweats. My GP sent me for blood tests (pre Covid times) to rule out a heart tumour - fortunately all fine. These sweats are known as adrenaline rushes and you need to have a simple blood test to find out what’s wrong.
