anyone get night sweats with heart failure

Hi, does anyone get night sweats with heart failure? I am way past menopause so it’s not related to that. I wondered about medication but my nurse said it wasn’t related. Interested to know if anyone else has similar experience

I don’t have HF but I do get occasional night sweats, i personally think that’s part of life!

hi Happyrosie, think they can be part of life if occasional but these are every night for weeks now. Not a usual thing for me and it’s not down to hot room or too many bedclothes so feel there must be some other cause.

My husband has HF & he suffers with night sweats, though not every night. When they happen he'll get them every night for several nights, stop for a short time and then they start again. However, we think his is connected to cancer treatment, he has an oncologist appt this month so will ask then.

I do know of other people with HF who have/had hot sweats but it's not a recognised symptom of HF, maybe a reaction to the meds you take?

Thank you Lezzers. Sorry to hear that your husband also has cancer. I think you are right that the cancer meds can cause the sweats. Interesting to know that you know of other HF patients that had them. I do have the feeling it may be the meds. Have only just started on Eplerenone which is a diuretic and they seemed to start at the same time. Hopefully if it is that they will settle in time.

Thank you for thinking of my husband. I belong to a 'dedicated' HF support group and hot sweats have been mentioned on there a few times.

what heart medication are you on

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toSuebedoo

Hi Suebedo, I’m on Ramipril, Edoxaban, Digixin and Eplerenone. Seem to have been having the night sweats after Eplerenone added.

Check with your doctor if you should/could take medicines at a different time. Although I still get some night-sweats, Lisinopril made them worse so I was told to take them in the morning so the hot-flush they caused would dissipate with normal activity.

Mousakka in reply toDavey77

Hi Davey77, I take all my medication in the morning so probably that is the best time as I would have minimal amounts left at night.

I had them when I had endocarditis

Mousakka in reply toFountainsfewston

Hi Fountansfewston, sorry you had endocarditis. I have only just been diagnosed with HF and was in hospital for a week so think that has been ruled out hopefully

Ah, that’s great that it’s been ruled out.

Hope you start to feel better soon

I don't have HF but I do get night sweats, as does my sister. In our cases it's due to problems with thyroid and parathyroid. I believe there can be many reasons so I would suggest you have a word with your GP to see if they can shed any light on tge cause. Good luck

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toscentedgardener

Hi Scentedgardener, don’t think I have thyroid problems but am thinking of getting my GP to do some more health checks.

I think that's a good idea, there are so many potential reasons, and in my opinion it's a yucky problem and creates so much more washing.

I had them when I was at work. For me it wasn't the heart, it was stress. Are you stressed at all? could be the cause 🤔

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toWooodsie

Hi Woodside, yes always a bit and sometimes a lot! I suffer from severe ME and fibromyalgia as well as the HF. Could be the cause as I know stress can do all sorts of things to you. Hope yours has calmed down now.

Thanks Moussaka, since I retired I have only had it about 3 times. Always when something was worrying me 😭🤣🤣🤣

As a precaution I would suggest you discuss with your Dr and ask if a blood test is appropriate to rule out any other issues. Better over zealous than presuming.

Yes , think there are a few articles on the internet relating to this....just another annoying little thing to deal with as a HF patient. Hope you are managing to keep as well as you can with yours xx

Hi

I am an almost 77 yo Male and I do get some sort of Hot Flush symptoms., but I think describing it as a Hot Flush is maybe not quite correct, more like a bout of sweating ! It can get that bad I wake with what feels like water running off my chest and then it goes cold, bed linen and pillow need changing. Don't know if it's HF meds or not but it's not pleasant to say the least.

ps OH still has Hot Flushes so I understand the female side to this.

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toPrada47

Hi Prada47, bedding certainly does get soaked and mine are definitely hot flushes. Not pleasant whichever temperature they come in. With your OH getting them as well you have quite a problem there between you 😄

Hi I have HF and I get night sweats sometimes but I won’t link it to HF, more likely with me it’s when I have a cold coming.

Hi Deejay62, no signs of colds at the moment

I had nights sweats for a period when in hospital and it was found I had pericarditis. This resolved once medicated.

Hi Cooper10, hopefully not that as they would have picked that up in hospital recently hopefully. Glad your resolved

I get all sorts of the day sweats since having HA and all meds. Because if my age it’s just been put down to menopause yet they started a week after meds started and are different to the hot flushes I used to suffer thst had stopped pre heart attack.

Hi trafar, definitely sounds like meds with yours.

Hi, I’m way past menopause (70) but still get night sweats. Talking to friends of a similar age I’m not alone and I’m the only one of us with heart problems and the associated medication. I don’t have heart failure though. I just put it down to another one of the ‘joys’ of being female!

Hi - my husband had night sweats which was caused by the meds. Ramipril made it worse.

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toSuebedoo

Hi Suebedoo, I’m on Ramipril so could be the culprit. My HF nurse wants to increase the dose so that could be interesting. Don’t want things to get any worse.

trafar profile image
trafar in reply toMousakka

I too was on ramipril and get sweats I have come off due to it causing a cough which has now cleared, I am still getting the sweats although it could just take a while to get out of your system. I will wait a month and post if they stop.

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply totrafar

Hi trafar, I’ve been on Ramipril since December but only started getting the night sweats in March so would think I would have had them earlier if it was that, I do have the cough though which is irritating. They are just about to up my dose of Ramipril so will see what happens.

trafar profile image
trafar in reply toMousakka

I only started the cough 3 months in so it is possible it’s a build up, my ramipril cough was an awful cough I woukd have never believed it was possible. Fingers crossed your new dose doesn’t make it worse

Yep. I mean, I did a little anyway because I'm a big manly man but after my op I certainly did. I'm not sure if it's linked to the HF, the op, the medication or just a summer thing (it's nowhere near as bad over winter) but it definitely increased considerably immediately after the op.

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka in reply toBicuspidBloke

Hi BicuspidBloke, I’m not looking forward to summer. Nearly finished me last year and I didn’t have my diagnosis then.

BicuspidBloke profile image
BicuspidBloke in reply toMousakka

Me too. All I can recommend is a cooling bed sheet plus bedding made from linen, bamboo or cotton. And open windows. I'll be honest - it was still bad with them but I'd hate to think how bad it would be without them. I'm just hoping my body has acclimatised to its new status (post-op and thus no longer in HF) and this summer will be better.

My husband had night sweats and I was worried about them. He doesn't have heart problems. He had blood tests because he had lost weight but all was good. (he walks a lot) I read that low vitamin B 12 could cause this. So he has been taking vitamin B complex supplement for about 3 weeks and has not had a night sweat since taking them. Early days yet but so far so good. Something to think about.

Mousakka profile image
Mousakka

Hi Miriam123, I’m glad that the B complex supplement has helped your husband. I don’t think that it will be the cause of my problem as I have taken a B complex supplement for years and sometimes extra B12. I’m not adding in the B12 at the moment so could try to see if it helps but thanks for the info.
