Might be one for the Doc, but I was wondering if anybody has had experience of getting a tattoo whilst on blood thinners? I want a memento to appreciate the fact I'm still here. I'm on 60mg of Edoxaban daily.

Dear MertleTurtle

My tattooist had no problems with me being on blood thinners, he said that the ink is not pushed in that far. I am extensively tattooed.

My Dr was not so happy but could not really answer the question other than about infection etc. but he's a bit old school and thinks that tattooist are a bit unclean. { he's younger than me }

Take care and enjoy getting inked, a good tattooist will put you right.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Getting a tattoo when you are on blood thinners (also known as anticoagulants) is possible but many tattoo artists will not allow it. There are also some side effects and risks that range from a higher possibility of getting an infected tattoo to losing a lot of blood during the session. If you do get an infection there is a risk of getting endocarditis!

Blood thinners prevent your blood from clotting, which makes for a very bloody and messy tattoo session. It also prevents your tattoo from healing quickly and safely afterwards.

Ultimately your decision.

Great stuff, thankyou Michael JH. I'll wait until I get off these meds👍

Dear MertleTurtle

I am so sorry that I didn’t read your post thoroughly, you are on Edoxaban which is an Anticoagulant not a blood thinner.

I would not have the Tattoo done without your Drs say. I would not have tattoo work done if I was on these.

I am on aspirin as a blood thinner and that is a different story.

So sorry for the wrong information in my last answer.

Take care

Just a clarification, the term ' blood thinner' is a misnomer.

There are several approaches to help preventing blood clots forming. Neither ' thin' the blood they help prevent blood clots forming.

Antiplatelet medications such as Clopidogrel, heparin by injection and aspirin.

Anticoagulants such as warfarin and Direct oral anticoagulants DOAC eg Edoxaban

The BHF has some useful information.

I’m in the process of having a full sleeve done, and I’m taking 75mg of aspirin a day. Absolutely no problems so far, the tattooist said there was hardly anymore bleeding from me, than someone who wasn’t on a blood thinner.

If in doubt have a word with the doctor.

Good luck, and don’t forget to show us your tattoo. 👍🏻👍🏻
