Leaky heart valve.

I've been told I've a leaky heart valve by an under doctor on the phone. I don't understand this condition. And my own heath clinic hasn't been told about it. I'm to be given a test yearly to keep an eye on me. This is after a Tia 10 months ago. There's no one to explain it to me.

I am sorry you are short of information. If you search ‘BHF leaky heart valves’ you will get some good clarity. My mitral valve has been monitored yearly with an echo, and it’s taken a few years to worsen (slightly) from mild to moderate. Cardio tells me they will not even consider surgery with me unless it gets to ‘severe’.

If you need more your GP should be able to clarify things for you.

Thanks for your reply. A doctor is phoning at the end of January. So will ask more then. We cannot get to see a doctor down here in Sussex. Must be the same all over now.

That seems a long time….is that wait for a phone call or face-to face?

Sorry, I realise you said it was phone. It’s not so bad around here….but that’s no comfort. You do need some clarity. Wish things were working better for you.

Dear Bager

What an awful way to receive this type of information on your illness.

I can only presume that this was after tests done, maybe it’s down to the pandemic that they told you this way, but that does seem odd and a little heartless.

I would contact them and maybe get a face to face appointment with someone that can explain the diagnosis with you.

As Kristin1812 has already said that all heart problems have stages, from mild to chronic.

I hope that yours is on the mild end.

Take care

Thanks. For your reply. It's makes me think mine must be mild as I can still do thing's like walking and gardening.

People with very severe leaks can be completely asymptomatic..

Hi Bager. My mitral valve regurgitation was probably there for a while before it was diagnosed with an echo. It was "mild", and I could cope perfectly well at that level. Later, I found I was struggling a bit more, and an echo showed that it was "severe". That then led to a repair op. It would be helpful to know how"leaky" your valve is, but it's good that you are now in the system and will be monitored!😀
