leaky heart valve
Hi yes quite alot of us on here have some form of leaky heart valve. Which valve is leaky? Mine is my aorta, it's bicuspid and severe aortic regurgitation and moderate stenosis so will eventually need valve replacement surgery. Was you recently diagnosed with this?? or you just want to some advice. This forum is great! You get to know people just like you and helps you to feel less alone. I'm sure others will be along soon to give you much better advice.
Hello
I have a slightly leaky valve
Not sure to what extent yours is but many can have a mild leaky valve and live with it if it stays that way and if it were to get worse they can treat it so all in all it can not be as bad as it seems x
My husband has a leaky aortic valve discovered when he went for a pre opp for his hip replacement (having waited 3 yrs for it) Hospital demanded he saw a cardiologist before they did his hip. Cardiologist says it is moderate to severe but he will be fine having hip surgery. His heart is working well, but will need heart surgery at some point. Cardiologist is quite clear that hip surgery is the priority as it is dramatically affecting his mobility. His medication has been altered to take account of heart issues, but we are now hopefully awaiting his hip replacement.
Wishing you luck not sure what I have
It was a shock to us as my husband had had no heart problems apart from high blood pressure. It has been important for us to find out more, so we know what he is dealing with. My brother has had a leaky valve for years, but just has to have a yearly echocardiogram. I hope you find out more details soon.
I have a moderately leaky mitral valve which has been the same for at least 12 years. I do have to be checked by Cardiology before any surgery - as above - hip replacements were top priority!
I have Mild Mitral valve regurgitation or" Flash Back" as my EP calls it .Not serious enough to bother with so that's good. It seems quite a few suffer from leaky valves! Best wishes on your own journey!
I have a leaky tricuspid valve. Unfortunately it comes with my congenital heart disease. So we are on a watch and wait process. All my other valves are OK according to mri. But what the future holds I don't know. Take care.
ditto hope your ok
Thank for your reply at least iam not alone. I don't know going through hell at the moment. It is a pain to have a congenital heart defect which basically puts the tricuspid vavle in the wrong place. But it has served me well so far. Its a journey I would not wish on anyone. Hope you get yours resolved.
I had mild murmer from mitral diagnosed in 1990 when I was in my early 30s. Never caused me any issues until recently when it deteriorated rapidly ending up with mitral repair in the Brompton last year. Don't sweat it as long as it gets regular monitoring
Hello Bobkins99I'm glad that you had your valve repaired and that you are doing better with it. Can I just ask you how long did you live with your mitral valve situation before it went worst?
I have mild mitral valve regurgitation and 2 other valves are mildly leaky too. Wish you well.

First diagnosed as mild in 1990, started to notice increased shortness of breath 2019 so no real issue for 30 years, but got worse very quickly. Turned out the neo-cords had snapped so it was just flapping around really.
Yes 😊 but it’s been fixed now. My mitral valve wasn’t closing so the blood wasn’t going where it should. All sorted now 😊❤️🩹
Yes, moderate mitral regurgitation and mild tricuspid. They dont bother because they've stayed the same for years.
Hey Folks.
I had a leaking aortic valve. It was bicuspid, and was not working very well at all. This caused some other issues with my left ventricular, enlarging. The valve was replaced, but much of the damage had been already done. The good new is the old ticker has remodelled itself so there is about 35% pumping post op 2021, up from 21% pre op. A fantastic job done all round, please I get the chance to type this, if not picked up it could have soon gone the other direction . 🤔
I had an infection on my mitral valve that resulted in moderate to severe leaking/regurgitation. I had to have surgery to have it replaced with a mechanical valve but now I'm all good!
Yes, I had a leaky aortic valve from birth. It was a bicuspid rather than tricuspid valve. Lived a pretty normal life until I was 66 when the time came to have it replaced. Surgery done at Wolverhampton Heart and Lung centre. Still riding motorbikes at 68 and enjoying life!
I had a leaky mitral valve which was replaced with a new pigs valve in January.
I had mitral valve regurgitation, mild at first. Got to severe then I had it repaired, sewn up and a ring inserted. Had it done minimally invasive, i.e. through the side of my chest rather than the front.
Glad that you had your valve repaired Beatles1956. How many years did you go without your mitral valve playing up? I have mild mitral valve regurgitation too.Mariathas
I was only diagnosed a few years ago, following tests for a fluttering in my heart. An echocardiogram showed mild regurgitation, but they would keep an eye on it. About a year later, it showed as severe, so they told me I needed an operation. I said I could take a cancellation, and soon after that I had a call from the surgeon to ask if I could be in London in just over 2 weeks time. So, to answer your question, I was unaware of it for over 60 years, then it seems to have progressed quickly.
Yes, Not wonderful but survivable. Breathlessness and sometimes giddiness. Has anyone suggested an op (e.g. Tavi) to replace the dodgy valve ? Not a very intimidating procedure (unless, very rarely, it goes wrong due to post-op blood-clotting.
Best of luck, and don't worry

Yes two I think - but not causing much trouble- will have an update on 15th November, when I get my 18 month echocardiogram - when I will know if things have worsened.
yes, severe mitral valve regurgitation. Shock diagnosis last December following routine blood test. Been on Papworth waiting list since March.
Hi Sorry for this long reply. l had to have my aortic valve replaced (2019) unbeknown to me it was in a critical condition!! so l was told by Cardiologist team , l hadnt take notice of the obvious symptoms of breathlessness, dizziness it was only when l got persistant Atrial Fibrillation l couldn't cope ,l was hospitalised and a scan revealed how bad it was 🫣 after it was done l never really returned to 100% health so in 2022 listening to my body more closely now l starting with similar symptoms again, So my Cardiologist kept changing my medications and l had 3 separate Cardioversions over 2 years and was down for an Abalation . l took a really bad turn in Dec 2023 , l was unexpectedly admitted into (a different hospital authority ) and scans revealed l had severe tricuspid valve regurgitation and this Cardiologist said no Cardioversions or Abalation was ever going to work in stopping atrial fibrillation because of this Tricuspid valve issue which lve had a long time my heart was enlarged on one side causing fluid swelling in my stomach legs face ? I was shocked 😲 so l agreed to let this Cardiologist treat me so in march l had this valve repaired again it was open heart surgery but lm feeling wonderful this time and started my heart rehabilitation classes yesterday🤞 hope this helps any questions please ask ❤️
Yes, I have just been told I have a mildly leaking heart valve.
I was told by HF nurse about my MVR mitral valve regurgitation after a heart attack. She wasn't to concerned saying loads of people could have it without knowing!!!
Hi Pinkladyga, I have a leaky mitral valve (mitral regurgitation), which was first picked up back in 2014 when I was 54. After competing in a 10k race, I had atrial fibrillation, which was corrected by cardioversion. The leak was subsequently picked up on echocardiogram. Then in 2022, the afib returned - again corrected by cardioversion. I was told my leak had worsened and I am now awaiting surgery to repair the leak. I’m now 63 and otherwise in good health - fit and active with only mild symptoms 🙏
Hi, had a triple bypass op end of May and just been told I have a a mild to moderate leaking tricuspid valve. Although initially taken aback , I have spoken to my surgeon and it appears that there is no action other than to monitor it and it may not cause any significant problem for years.
Best think to do is to get on with your life as if you had no problems ( obviously without going against medical advice .) I have found it is very easy to get caught up in our presenting health conditions which can further lower our quality of life. Modern medicine has resulted in many of us living longer ,but it doesn’t always assist us psychologically in making the most of our extended lives.
To finish, our grandfather was told he had a leaky valve when he was 60 and could have it fixed.
He said that he would take his chances and not have the op. He lived an active healthy life and died when he was 93, still going on daily walks and doing diy.
How lovely to find someone who thinks as I do. It is too easy to get pulled along on the heath train ans spend your latter years going to appointments and waiting for results. I decided to 'put my head back in the sand ' as my cardiologist put it and to enjoy as best I can the rest of my life. Just because it can be done does not mean it should be done. The mental strain of a condition is sometimes as bad as the condition itself. Unfortunately gp s do not have the expertise or the time to support the considerable anxiety a serious condition can generate. I speak of course from my own experience, other s may feel differently. Like your grandfather I have chosen to ' take my chances', and will try to enjoy what time I have left.
Good for you - I think a lot of health worries involve not emotionally appreciating that we all die, even if currently in good health; it is not if, but when.
In my cardiac rehab planning , I said my goal was to die painlessly in my sleep ( hopefully having done all I can for my friends and family. )
The universe is a splendid place and we owe it to ourselves to appreciate it’s beauty, for however long we have to do so.
İ was diagnosed over 3 years ago with mild mitral valve regurgitation, caused by a childhood illness that I didn't know I'd had (rheumatic fever). İt is now at moderate level and my tricuspid valve is mildly leaking now too! İ find it hard not to worry as I am not sure how quickly the leaks are going to worsen. However, I have found that it sure gives you an incentive to keep fit! Good luck with your journey x
Yes I have just been diagnosed with a leaky heart valve.
