If your consultant recommends it, I would go ahead. I know several people including my mother and recently myself that have had one with no ill effects, and many good ones. I had one fitted just over a year ago, with no problems. It is a simple, short procedure, with a well-tested piece of equipment, that can now be monitored remotely.

Have a chat with the BHF nurses Monday morning if you can.

Thank you rufus haven’t been able to get hold of heart nurse as yet I’m actually so confused if I want a device implanted and if it goes off I can only imagine the panic I would feel

Hi Kwagmire.

I had an ICD fitted in January. Procedure was quick and painless and recovery was also speedy. I had a fair bit of bruising and swelling but that died down quickly and my scar is now a thin pink strip. You can feel it under the skin and it does take a little getting used to, but I mostly forget it’s even there. I’m just back to normal.

I’m monitored from home with what looks like a router - all my information is sent across to hospital in my sleep.

I’ve not had any shock therapy as of yet (either warranted or unwarranted) and I’ve just received my driving license (it was suspended after my cardiac arrest in December).

Your cardiologist would not be suggesting an ICD if he/she didn’t believe it was beneficial.

I never feel mine. It is only monitored about every 6 months - they take a reading at night, which I don't know about until they ring me with the results. You are not allowed to drive for a short while after it is fitted, and you must notify the DVLA. I also told the car insurance people.
