I had OHS on 06/05/21, discharged on 11/05/21. All going well at home for just over 2 weeks and now I’m back in with an infection in the scar 😭 being treated with IV antibiotics. Can’t help but feel hopeless being back in hospital, missing home so much. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced infection afterwards and were you in for long? x

I have not had the experience you are going through even though I am waiting for a Bypass and this is a worry I think about getting an infection in the scar they make and I can imagine how gutted and upset you must feel
Those antibiotics though will do the trick and knowing Hospitals they do not want us taking those beds up for long so as soon as they can they will have you back home
Others that have had the experience will be along to tell you how long it took but wanted to try and tell you even though I would be gutted that you will soon be home and continue that recovery you have been doing so well with x
Sorry you're back in hospital. I had a small infection at the bottom of my scar after my first AVR but that was about a month after my surgery so I was able to take oral antibiotics. I think possibly because it is so soon after your op they don't want to take any risks, hence the hospital stay. I had a splenectomy between my two AVR surgeries and have been told that if I get any infections I need to be put on IV antibiotics straight away. Hope you make a quick recovery and back home soon.
Hi. I had an infection after my heart op over 20 years ago. It wasn’t treated at the time. I was sent home with community nurse coming in to dress the wound but no antibiotics! Ended up back in hospital a few months later as the infection had traveled to my sacroiliac joint & couldn’t walk! Spent 5 weeks in hospital on IV antibiotics & morphine for the pain. They let me go home after that with a cannula in & went to GP every day to be administered. Took 3 months in total. I think you are lucky they are on it so quickly which might mean a shorter job. Good luck 👍
Hi, thank you so much for your reply. Sorry to hear it got to that stage for you 😔 They are switching me to oral antibiotics today, but the wound is still quite wet, so they want to see some improvement before they can send me home under care of the district nurse. Hopefully in a few days there will be some improvement. I’m also 24 weeks pregnant and have a 3 year old at home, so really just want this over with 😬 xx
