Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice plz. I had a ha in Sept 2018 had stent then underwent double bypass in Jan 2019. Recovery for me was really slow still is!! I developed palpitations after the surgery and am really struggling to manage them. Had heart monitor for 5 days which ruled out af thankfully but I reported 19 episodes when I remembered but these weren't confirmed or denied in letter,no advice given no follow and no explanation!! Has anybody had similar experience? I never suffered with them prior to surgery.

Hi Nicki: I had arrhythmia and ectopic beats for months after surgery for a quad bypass. Fixed it with acupuncture, hawthorne and dan shen, two great herbs for the heart. – Jon

Hi Jon,That’s interesting!

I’ve had a quintuple bypass March 2019.

Since coming off Bisoprolol completely my heart feel a bit “manic” on times.

GP has nothing to say about it.

Can you tel me more about Hawthorn and Dan Shen please.

Where to get it and how you take it.

Thanks.

You should consult a qualified herbalist. Search here for side effects of coming off Bisoprolol, many suffer withdrawals

Hi LaceyLady,Yes, I understand about the withdrawal symptoms of Bisoprolol. I’ve been on them for four and a half years now. Started off on 5mg after a heart attack and stents. Went onto 2.5 mg after bypass. Then onto 1.25mg. Then off completely but was suffering heart going crazy so went back on them for a few month and then tried again. This time I’ve succeeded on staying off them.

I’ll try a herbalist thanks.

A word of caution. Herbal remedies do not have to go through the same safety checks as conventional medications.

There can be inconsistencies in the strength of preparations and additives.

They can interact with conventional medications and effect blood test results.

There are very few large clinical trials into the use of herbal remedies to treat heart conditions.

Hi Milkfairy,Thanks for the heads up on that but I would be very careful with anything like this.

I wouldn't take vitamin D without checking with the pharmacist 😉

I mean, who would have thought that I cannot eat or drink grapefruit!

When going put for a meal (ahhh the good old days 🤩) if I'm unsure of what's in the sauce I ask the ingredients. Too often I've found coconut milk in there.

We all have to be so careful. Although after five years of it, it's become second nature now (but still learning all the time) 🙂

Thanks again 👍

I got caught out by taking biotin it altered my troponin blood levels not good for someone with angina😊

Also artificial sweeteners cause me problems so I am now like you checking everything!

Stay well.

Wait, artificial sweeteners caused you problems. I take Sweetex. Only one in an espresso. I normally have three espressos a day. What problems were you getting. If you don't mind me asking.

So Biotin (basically a vitamin B) was making the heart feel like it's being damaged and so sending out more troponin. Gosh thats amazing!

Just goes to show that you should be getting everything from a balanced diet (maybe with the exception of vitamin D, but then only to the NHS recommendations and not these 4,000 IU ones)

All my bloods are fine thank goodness. I still have angina even after stents and bypasses so I still need to be careful.

Saying that... I have had a borderline liver function test for years. going back tomorrow for another lot of blood taken. I think my left arm is empty now so they'll have to use my right arm

😂😂😂😂

The biotin can alter the accuracy of troponin blood tests so you can have a false high or low result.Rather important as troponin levels are taken when you are being checked for a possible heart attack.

I live with vasospastic angina a type of non obstructive coronary artery disease. Artificial sweeteners, caffeine, beta blockers and adrenaline all cause my blood vessels to constrict.

Hi 007

Did you come off bisoprolol yourself or through your gp or cardiologist?

Because I'm having a nightmare with my gp and cardiologist with bisoprolol!! After my ha I was put on clopidigril(probably spelt wrong🤭)with bisoprolol along with some others. So my cardiologist said after a year the clopidigril and bisoprolol could be stopped, so at my review the clopidigril was stopped but my gp said I had to stay on bisoprolol, so I explained what cardiologist said. He said as I didn't suffer any heart damage I wouldn't need to continue with them but gp said I had to continue. So the question was put to the cardiologist regarding this and his response was in a letter of one sentence...maybe your gp has a reason to keep you on them!! He was asked why I should continue and an explanation as to why...I would've thought the cardiologist was best placed to explain this!! 🤔

I’m amazed your GP is arguing with your Consultant! Surely your GP should defer to the Consultant.

Sorry I should also say that my circulation is really bad, hence the query regarding bisoprolol. I believe the bisoprolol is playing a part in this..that's why I was questioning the need for bisoprolol if I don't have any damage..but no ones wants to give me an explanation 😠😡

Hi Madge11,My story is much like yours.

December 2016 heart attack.

March 2017 five stents.

March 2019 quintuple bypass (CABG x 5).

I was put on 5mg of Bisoprolol after heart attack and Clopidogrel for a year after stents. I was fine on Bisoprolol then.

After bypasses they again put me on Clopidogrel for a year and reduced my Bisoprolol to 2.5mg and I was fine then too.

Around mid 2020 I started to feel very tired at times (more than usual). I also started feeling dizzy and faint. My vision also started going strange, also headaches. No other signs of stroke of blood clots though.

I noticed that at these times my blood pressure was dropping down to 44bpm.

I did not have access to a cardiologist as I was signed off. So I went to my GP and she spoke to a cardiologist. The cardiologist said that as I didn’t have heart damage I could come off them (actually scans showed that I did have scarring on my heart).

So I reduced them from 2.5mg to 1.25mg and felt a lot better. My heart rate was a little higher and I was not getting the sudden dropping of bpm.

After two weeks my GP said to try stopping them altogether. That didn’t work… I was waking up at night thinking my heart was going to explode. So after a week I went back on them.

A few months later I was getting tired again so decided to give it another try and stopped them again.

This time I was better. I’m feeling less tired but my heart is still a little erratic. I’ve been off them now for a few months and I think it’s getting better or I’m getting more used to it.

I’m still a little concerned about coming off them completely because I have it in the report from the scan that I have scarring on the heart and in my book that means it’s probably damaged??? And I thought that Bisoprolol protected the heart from another heart attack.

However, my research indicates that after a year you can wean off them???

There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about Bisoprolol so I don’t know what or who to believe.

All I know is… I seem to be better off them than on and I think given more time my heart will settle more (but then what do I know? 🥴).

Hi 007

Yeah it's so frustrating and confusing when you can't get 2 different health care professionals to agree on anything...they each have their own opinion fair enough but you'd think on matters of the heart ie meds you'd think it would be the same!!! But apparently not...

What do you do 😉😂

Hi JonThank you for replying.

My problem with the palpitations is they are getting more frequent as time goes on not easier. I had a spell of them following surgery which is normal apparently and my bisoprolol was increased to 10mg a day. I was told they would settle down over a few months which they did,I was getting them once or twice in every month. But since before Christmas they have increased hugely, I'm now experiencing them up to 40 times a day 😒 they are really unnerving. I don't drink or smoke don't have caffeine..it's so frustrating that the gp or cardiologist don't talk to you and try and explain why they might be happening, if I had a better understanding I might be able to manage them better...I don't understand why after 2years of having surgery everything is worse!! Thought the surgery was meant to help fix me but instead I feel like I'm broken 💔😔

This cardiologist has lots of you tube clips on the topic of palpitations. Hope it helps. youtube.com/watch?v=eLzBnbv... Sanja Gupta, York Cardiologist.

Thank you Jack for this idea. It's very helpful and explains alot, which unfortunately I've not been able to access through the heart institute or cardiologist!! I will be looking at more of his videos to get an even better understanding. Again thank you.

Hi Jon

Been researching your suggestions on herbs and the hawthorn berries seem a good idea, thou some people report stomach pain sickness and constipation whilst on these and the other problem apparently is that they may interact with some heart meds or blood pressure meds, just wondering what medication your taking and if you've had any problems.

Nicki

I believe you should not take Hawthorne with other heart meds.

Hi Lacy lady

Yeah it appears using hawthorn is not a suggested option when taking heart meds. Thank you for replying.

The heart does not like being 'handled' so probably the cause of your palpitations.

I went into AF after my valve replacement and they said about 40% of patients do but many come out of it without treatment.

I've also read that Fluoroquinolones Cipro antibiotics are now known to trigger AF. I was pumped full of it prior to surgery for a prostate infection and right away developed tendonitis so can't be be sure it it was the drug or the operation that caused the AF.

Just a word of caution. Herbal remedies at present do not go through the same safety checks that conventional medications do.

Some herbal remedies can effect the way medications work or alter blood test results.

Hi Milkfairy

Thank you for your reply. Yes your right in what your saying and I need more information before even thinking about it as an alternative. I'm hoping to speak to a nurse this morning so I can get some advice on the palpitations.

From what I've read most people who use herbal products have already stopped most of their meds and for some it seems to work for them but I'm very wary of these things anyway.
