Chest pain after palpitations

I haven't had palpitations at all since my heart attack 4 years ago. Prior to that they were frequent and tests showed harmless. This weekend I've had 3 bouts of sudden thumps where things started to go black before my heart went back to normal but the unusual thing I've never had before is that they left me with chest pain; a dull pain that lasted about an hour and almost started a panic attack. I am waiting for a call from GP but has anyone else h ad any sort of pain after a bout of palpitations? It felt as if I'd been kicked.

Hello :-)

I cannot say I have had this happen but I am so glad you have phoned your GP and when you get your call I hope you will have time to let us know how you have got on :-) x

Your story has a few similarities to mine. After years of going to the doctor, cardiologist, and ER with mystery chest pain and palpitations—and the doctors tested me, didn’t find much and blew it off—even putting me on blood pressure meds to appease me (even though I didn’t need them)…it turned out that something huge was wrong when I was admitted for chest pain and tests. My new cardiologist ordered an angiogram, and it turned out that my ventricular heart artery was70% blocked and that I needed a stent! He saved my life!

Hi

Yes to pain after palpitations. I feel as though I have been punched in the heart or that it has overdone it at the gym! I am currently under investigation having had bouts of palpitations & angina - some instances lasting for over three days with a feeling of heaviness and/or my heart being squeezed. So far nothing beyond this & now on statins & Bisprodol whilst awaiting CT scans. Good luck with your investigations, I will be following with interest.

Well I was asked to go down to see the doc with an ECG first. ECG was absolutely fine. Because I had only had 3 events , two Saturday and one Sunday, GP decided to wait and see. If I get it again with pain I have to phone and they will arrange a 24 hour Holter monitor right away. However when it only happens now and them, there's no guarantee it would happen while I wore the monitor. This is exactly what happened years ago when they first started. It was months and months before any kind of t est showed them. He did say palpitations can sometimes be quite fierce and make you feel as if you've been kicked. I don't want to call it pain because I associate pain with sharpness and this is dull. So it's wait and see whether it happens again- a bit like my internet that keeps dropping out and I have to wait and see whether, what the engineer did, has fixed it.

Are there any wearable e.g. on the wrist or elsewhere, consumer ECG devices that you could get which you would wear all the time and so be sure to capture it when it occurs? Some of these are well developed, verified and have class II medical device status, which means they should have a decent degree of accuracy.

They aren't happening often enough to warrant paying for any kind of monitor. GP isn't worried. My palpitations are harmless but the pain is unusual although it can happen.

Yes mine is a dull pain. All ECG's have been ok and my 24hr should some irregularities but 'nothing significant'. I have had an ultrasound, this showed a minor issue on the left side but not sufficient to be causing the angina. I am now awaiting a CT calcium scan and CT with dye to find out what is going on. My 'big' events tend to be on a cyclical trend. Hopefully we will both be sorted out soon 🙂

I can't answer your question directly because I've never had any pain associated with palpitations but you definitely need medical advice on that as it sounds potentially serious. Just to say that I was having bad palpitations (nearly losing consciousness), and have since completely cut out coffee which is known to be a contributing factor. Since then, about 6 months now, I've haven't had any. As I say coffee is known to be a contributing factor so nothing new, but in my case, albeit a loss in my life as I love coffee (!), it's made a big difference. (I'm already on beta blockers to control arrhythmias).

I don't drink coffee but lots of tea. Caffeine is a big trigger as is chocolate and stress . I used to have hem y ears ago very badly but they all settled down when the stress was removed; not had any for years. GP isn't worried unless they continue but right now they don't happen often enough or even daily so that a monitor would catch them.

Hi I woke up with Palpitations and then pain in my chest, then the next time they happened

I took deep breaths and it stop immediately, I was diagnosed with Ectopic beats at 15 per cent but Heart MRI said normal so no meds, but I am very worried as the palpitations have just started, could this cause something else

Mine have never caused any problems at all but they do ned checking out. The difficulty when they are intermittent is actually catching hem to find out where they come from. It took me a year of ECGs, scans and finally a stress test. Even that didn't show anything until I sat down to rest and got palpitations. They had left the electrodes attached so they were able to see them.
