Severe pain in my arm

Hi this morning I had severe main in my left arm that radiated into my back under the shoulder blade. I was not able to relieve it by moving my arm, lying down or standing up. I called 999 and the paramedics gave me an ecg which they thought was normal. Blood pressure also normal. Just in case they took my to A&E where they took bloods from both arms over a couple of hours and again took ecg’s. Conclusion was that there was no sign of a HA and they could not diagnose what had caused the pain. I am on warfarin, bisoprolol, ramapril and for the last two weeks statins after a MVP repair in 2017. The A&E doctor did not think that the statins would have caused such severe and localised pain. Has anyone else had pain in their arms that goes away after 10 minutes?

I was good it wasn’t a HA. Had you taken a spray when you had the pain?

Dear Kristin1812 I am not on any sprays. I don’t think this is angina as it was not bought on by exercise. I was just sitting down looking at my phone when the pain started.

It’s just that if I call an ambulance with chest and left arm pain, the paramedics always ask if I’ve taken any sprays, and often give me another one, if the pain hasn’t stopped.

Hiya, have you had a diagnosis for angina??just wondered as my angina doesn't necessarily trigger when I'm active it also happens when I'm at rest or even asleep.it can also affect my arm and shoulder then sometimes up to my jaw.have chat with gp just to clarify you don't need gtn spray. xdebx

I have not had a diagnosis for angina. Whilst I am not the fittest person on the block I am quite capable on doing a 5 mile walk every day (if the weather ever clears up). There was no pain in my heart area or jaw just the pain in my arm (much the same as if you put a blood pressure cuff on and pumped it up to maximum and left it on). I will speak to my GP in the morning.

Good idea it could be anything and also nothing but with your history it's even more important to ask a professional..lets hope it's just a trapped nerve or two..gl xx deb xx

Hi I am not any sprays. The A&E doctor did not suggest it. He suggested that I make an appointment with my GP which I will do tomorrow.

I had a similar experience the other week. I was sitting in the car waiting for someone when both my arms felt strange and weak. I then got the most excruciating pain in my left arm. It felt as though it was being compressed or squeezed really hard. Only lasted for a few minutes. Rang the doctor who couldn’t explain it. She referred me to the stroke clinic but the conclusion was that it wasn’t a stroke. I’m on bisoprolol following surgery for a mitral valve repair, rivaroxaban and atorvastatin. My bet is on the bisoprolol as I’ve been on the others for months with no problems.

I have been on bisoprolol for 3years and have not experienced this pain before. I have been put on statins two weeks ago which could be the cause but the A&E doctor dismissed this as he said that pain would be a dull ache all over the body. Has anyone had thus when taking statins?

Regularly in exactly the same place. Nothing to do with my heart; it's a muscle that goes into spasm near a prolapsed disc.

I have MVP too and I feel this strange numbness on left shoulder sometime radiating in front of my left chest or back through shoulder blader. I assume it’s because of my back sprain.

Was diagnosed with unstable angina after similar pain last year.

Left arm at the top, as if it were being severely squeezed and always at rest, nothing to do with exercising or movement.

Initially prescribed the under tongue spray but later Isosorbide mononitrate taken daily. Now no pain at all.

I also take Flecainide, Apixiban and Atorvastatin and hope that lot will cover me!

I hope you have diagnosis and treatment soon. Good luck.

Hello from the USA 🇺🇸I have had that same pain as many have stated above, left arm to jaw, but my BP was also quite elevated. I was told to head to the ER. Did all the tests and a few scans and they found nothing. No HA.

This began 3 years ago.

Pain came and went for the next few months, years, funny rash started on my face, inflammation markers elevated, then one day horrific terrifying pain that sent me to the ER again, and diagnosed with an aortic dissection descending. I consider myself lucky...

I have been diagnosed with LVV/ Aortitus.

Severe stenosis in my right renal artery, and a stent placed.

Inflammation causes the pain.

Have you been checked for any of the above ?

My meds thus far and currently :

16 month taper of steroids, Actemra, hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan (ARB highest dose, Amlopidine (CCB/helps lower heart rate)

Carvedilol (metoprolol gave me the blues and then some)

and Rosuvastatin, highest dose.

From what I gather, and you need to be on these meds, certain beta blockers (metoprolol) cause angina like chest discomfort and irregular HB’s that scare us, and the only statin that I’ve read that most people can tolerate is Rosuvastatin.

Which Statin do you take ?

Multiple Medication Management is difficult and can seem more worrisome than the actual illness itself sometimes.

Keep The Conversation going with your cardiologist, GP and anyone else in your care. Write down and Ask questions. Can you Email, schedule telehealth appts, have a friend or loved one nearby to listen in on conversations ?

I am doing OK, after lots of trial and error, persistent and consistent advocating for myself, my body, my soul.

Hang in there and please take care.
