Sartins side effects

I am new on this site. I have been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy after echocardiogram. After a year from first seeing my GP. Consultant is putting me on sartins, don’t know which one yet until my GP prescribes. Are there any problems with this medication.

If you mean statins they're pretty much a hot potato on this forum. At the top of the page there's a magnifying glass, if you type statins in there you'll pretty much get loads of info there which should enable you to make an informed decision.

Best wishes ☺

Just copy letter from cardiologist to my GP it suggests Valsartan.

😂 My mistake!

Valsartan is a completely different med to a statin.

Perhaps you could expand on why you're concerned about side effects. All meds can have side effects, it doesn't mean everyone will get those side effects. My husband takes candesartan which is a similar drug to Valsartan and he has no issue with them.

I was put on ramipril and had the cough, extreme tiredness, and dizziness so stopped taking them.

Sorry about mix up it was my cardiologist who just called them Sartans didn’t mean to confuse with statins. I am worried dizziness especially as I still want to get out and about.

Have you checked your blood pressure?

I was prescribed Candesartin and my blood pressure dropped dramatically. I felt awful.

Did you stop taking the candesartan?

Yes after 48 hours.

I was on a BP monitor at home to check my BP.

I was on a baby dose of 1mg!

Did you take anything else in it's place, or was it not necessary?

The plan was to replace one of my other medications. Amlodipine as I am also on Diltiaziem.

So I remain on my original medication regime.

I am worried about that too as I don’t have high blood pressure, they are to help heart work better.

Then I suggest as others have done that you monitor your BP at home.

If you have any problems go and see your GP.

Ive taken them for over 2 years with no issue.

I've taken them for the last 13 months without any ill effects. There's a lot of anti-statins posts here and elsewhere.

I think the best advice is to approach taking them with an open mind and then decide what you think of them.

in reply toSpiritoftheFloyd

Yes I remember having to overcome all the negativity. I discussed it with my doc, who is an integrative medicine guy, not quick to write prescriptions. He explained to me why it was important, which is not an easy job to convince a retired nurse who is skeptical of everything medical🧐😂😂😂

Hello and welcome to the forum! I was originally prescribed statins when I was diagnosed with PAD (peripheral arterial disease) a decade ago. There are about five statins routinely prescribed in this country. They are also available in various doses, and as such there is usually a statin/dose combination to suit most people. I started on Simvastatin and got muscle aches but a change to Atorvastatin cured this. Often it is a question of working with your GP to get the right combination. Besides reducing cholesterol they also stabilise existing plaque and reduce irritation often a precursor to plaque formation. There are also reports of a reduced incidence of gum disease amongst those taking statins. Dental health is particularly important to those with heart issues.

I dont know if there is any correlation but in the 2 yr of taking statins, Ive had no a fib. Previously my episodes were 2-6 months apart. I have to think the anti- inflammatory affect has to be helping me out.

Couldn’t agree more, I’ve been on Avorostatin for years and years, with no side effects, and cholesterol stays low, I’m taking 20 mgs daily.

👍 I was initially on 10mg which dropped my total cholesterol, with diet tweaks, to 3.2. pre bypass. They push it right up post bypass and currently it is 3.0 on 40 mg (law of diminishing returns). Cardiologist is happy and my liver is happy so I am happy! 😀

Just had letter from cardiologist, wants to put me on Valsartan, spironolactone and a beta blocker.

Apologies, we all seem to have gone off at a tangent. When I developed angina I was prescribed Diltiazem. Whilst it prevents angina it also lowers blood pressure which combined with Lisinopril (ACE inhibitors are frequently prescribed to diabetics to protect the kidneys) caused episodes of hypotension. A change from Diltiazem to Isorbide Mononitrate overcame this. After my bypass a beta blocker (Bisoporol) replaced the nitrate. The dose of Lisinopril was reduced to get my BP right.

All the drugs you are being prescribed can reduce BP. I think it highly advisable to get a BP meter to keep an eye on things.

HI

VALSARTAN is the major ingredient in the Branded Medication known as Entresto. I don't know if it is offered as an individual medication or as in the case of Entresto is combined with Sacubitril. I take Entresto without any problems. Hope this helps clear up the statins !!!

Regards

Boathouse do you have a Heart Nurse ?? GPs can not prescribe Valsartan as Entresto without a Cardiologist or Heart Failure Nurse first prescribing it !!!
