Stopping lansoprazole or PPI's

As I have been on it for 18 years or so because of a non steroidal anti inflammatory. But was never taken off it. So I take meds for my heart . Ramipril , ranolazine apixaban diltiazem. Tramadol . As we know PPI's they stop production of stomach acid but also stops up take of vital nutrients mag cal etc. So we looked up a herbal alternatives and found Slippery Elm. So 1 week in to it I have had very minimal reflux. Which if I take Slippery Elm a couple times a day it controls it. So my question is . Was it necessary for me to take PPI'S for so long for no reason and is there anyone else in a similar position. I hope this helps anyone

Hi Pippy. I’d talk to my GP about this. It’s one of those meds that’s falling out of favour if not needed. We had a couple of new doctors at our practice and according to the nurse I have seen recently, they’ve stopped PPIs for loads of patients and it has had no impact. I was able to drop Lansoprazole without impact. I suggest you talk to your pharmacist/GP in any case if you’re supplementing with herbal remedies. Good luck.

Hi . I have spoken to my new GP and he was happy for me to stop and pointed out that I should of had regular blood tests for vitamin b 12 and creatinine every few years . Which I never had . But yes please see your GP.

Ah. Sorry. Got the wrong end of the stick. You’ve stopped taking the PPI already - not asking if it made sense. Hope it works out.

I remenber Slippery Elm many years ago was advised by a friend who said it calms the indigestion system & is especially good if someone had a tuumy upset/bug. I had forgotten about it so thanks for the information

Hi there, can you tell me how are getting on now please. I've tried to come off these tablets a few times (been on them for 14 years) and get rebound reflux each time and so I end up back on the PPI. I desperately want to come off them because of the long term affect on health...

Hi apperantly it can take up to 6 months for your body to re adjust. I was able to control my symptoms ver well with slippery elm a 100% natural product would advise any one to try . Absolute great find doesnt mess with the production of essential stomach acid. I decided to give it 6 months . unfortunately after 6 months and no change i had some test done (endoscopy and PH test) i have found i have hiatus hernia and barretts esophagus
