I had a double bypass/midcab March 2017, I have had pain in my breast ever since and my surgeon said I will always have ongoing pain. I've got a mammogram next week (1st one) and am scared it's going to hurt, are there any women out there that have had a mammogram after heart surgery.

I’m not sure you want to know this but all my mammograms were very painful and I have not had open heart surgery. The good thing is the radiographers are very quick and considerate but they have to get accurate pictures. Just tell them how you feel. You’ll be fine.

I had a ha and stent end of aug a CT scan picked up I had a lump on my breast so I had a mammogram in October. It was uncomfortable for a few seconds but not painful. Thankfully it was nothing sinister. The staff were fantastic and made sure I was ok. Talk to them about your fear before they start. Good luck x

I've not had heart surgery but just wanted to add that I've had 2 pain free mammograms so far. My mum put fear into me telling me not to have one as they are so painful but luckily for me i don't feel any pain at all. I will say its bit awkward getting in the right positions for it at times though but im happy to get it done to put my mind at rest (2nd one was due to finding a lump but luckily it was benign) . Good luck with yrs, Can you take a pain killer beforehand maybe? x

Hi, it can be uncomfortable but not dreadful, don’t worry, it’s very quick, it’s just one more of the medical things women we women cope with. Good Luck!

I had open heart surgery in April 2018 and had my first mammogram afterwards, last month. I was worried about the scar but I had a word with the radiographer and asked her to try not to pull against it. She was was very gentle in getting me into position and it didn't hurt any more than usual!

A few years ago when I had a mammogram I was told to try to relax by breathing slowly and deeply because if you are tense it hurts more. It did seem to hurt less.

Hope yours goes well.

I had an open heart surgery in May 2019 and a mammogram yesterday. It was uncomfortable but since I mentioned my operation and my worries the radiographer was extremely gentle and quick. Good luck xxx

Hi I had a triple bypass in April 18, followed by a severe electrolyte imbalance. I was then called for a mammogram in August of that year. I told the radiographer when I arrived about my bypass ect but there was no problem with the mammogram other that it feeling uncomfortable as usual. Please try to relax & don’t worry.

My wife was worried about her first mammogram as all her female relatives said how painful it was but she had no pain or discomfort at all. She didn't go to the local portacabins that come round because she had to miss her initial appointment because of other hospital appointments but went to the hospital don't know whether that made a difference?

I am sure the surgery will not make it any easier but whether it will make it worse who can say. Just make sure that the radiographer is aware.

I hope it all goes well for you.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I had my mammogram on Tuesday I told the radiographer and she was very gentle, the one where I've had the midcab is still tender but I do have continual pain there most the time anyway. Have a great Christmas everyone. X
