Hi all, I am 52 and I have started riding my bicycle a lot recently and have noticed that my resting heart rate is 42! I take statins for high cholesterol which is hereditary and is under control. Anybody else been checked for low pulse? TIA

Bradycardia or am I getting fitter?
Hi stubear had the same 4o hr didn’t know went to GP with cough sent me for ecg which came back abnormal, then went for a 24 hr ecg. I now get fluttering very light in my chest but no other symptoms. Waited 6 weeks for results apparently got extra heart beats waiting to see consultant on 23 rd September also got an appt for an heart scan on 22 nd aug. I am not stressing because my GP refferal was marked urgent but the consultant said it wasn’t urgent also I believe if anything sinister it would have been red flagged and I would have been called back. I am 72 my GP says I have an ageing heart made me wonder what our lovely queens got then. Take care xxx
queens got then
I also have high cholesterol 7.0 (hereditary) but so far because of my lifestyle, good diet and non smoker, doc has not put me on meds ... yet. I get checked annually. I’ve also recently taken up more exercise and lost weight. Resting heart rate (RHR) is now back 52. I used to hill walk a lot and about 5 years ago during a check RHR was 52 and doc said ‘for my age she was well impressed’. I think with exercise your heart rate does lower but not sure how low is safe. I am now 58.

Hello StuBear ,
I m a firm believer in following your instincts? If you have noticed a sudden and unexplained change in your resting heart beat it might be wise to get yourself checked out for peace of mind? I have no knowledge concerning potential heart issues? But I know that medication can have unwanted consequences for heart rate and blood pressure?
Best wishes.
My doc checked my bp and found my hr was 44. Since 2011 I’ve checked my hr fairly often and it dropped into the 40s here and there, but mainly stayed in the middle 50s unless I did anything physical when it went up into the 60/70s. I’ve since had an overnight monitor which didn’t show anything and had an Echocardiogram which again was normal. I’ve now had a Loop fitted and after the first month or so, nothing has showed up. The medic I saw yesterday said his pulse dropped into the 40s and he was a guy in his 30s. I do get odd lightheaded feelings at times, the odd heart flutter and mild ache from my heart area none of which gets in the way. All the above treatment was straight forward and not difficult in ant way. So we battle on and get on with life.
