He had his operation this morning to replace the ascending aorta. All has gone very well so far. They didn’t need to replace the aortic root or valve so when he recovers I am sure he will feel relief. Right now he is snoring in recovery and talking gibberish to anyone who will listen. The first bit of nonsense was he wanted a Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic, a drink I don’t think he has ever drunk. And then promptly went back to sleep.
So many of you have taken the time to support him over the past 6 months with words of advice and kindness. I feel he has had a lucky escape finding the problem before it got too complicated and the NHS have been fabulous so far.
Long way to go to say he is fully out of the woods as he currently has an external pacemaker to give his own heart rhythm a break. That will be switched off at some point and then he will know how things have really gone.
Until that time I am sure he will continue his road to full recovery and will then be able to update you all as to how it felt from his own point of view.
Best wishes to everyone.

Hi, pleased to hear the surgery is over and done with. People say strange things when they’re coming round! All the best for his recovery and for you too.
Best wishes. I am on watch and wait to have my ascending Aorta sorted. What was the size of the "Barons" Aorta when the hospital deemed surgery necessary. Lovely to hear ge is recovering well. Kind regards. Roy
It was 49mm and we were told the cut off was 50mm. It had increased by (I think) 6mm in two years so we knew surgery was inevitable around about now. Many best wishes Roy for whatever lies ahead for you.
All sounds good, best wishes to the Baron. To find a large group of aortic surgery folk, check the Facebook Private Group "Aortic Dissection UK Buddies"
So good to hear that things are going well so far. As you say there’s a way to go. Give him gentle hugs from us and hope he gets a taste for gin sometime soon.
