Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with a heart murmur 15 yrs ago and have no symptoms or medication. I am due a hip replacement in 6 wks time. The doctor gave me naproxen for pain which i take with paracetamol. My blood pressure lately has been very high. I have decided to come off the naproxen. Would this have caused high blood pressure? Should I go on other BP medication before op?

High blood pressure
You should discuss this with your doctor before adjusting your medication.
Good luck with your operation!
Naproxen does have hypertension as a possible side-effect, however that doesn’t necessarily mean that your high blood pressure is definitely a result of taking the naproxen. Are you taking it for your hip? Generally speaking I would never advise stopping any prescribed medication without medical advice, and I would be wary of doing so in this instance: the naproxen is being used for pain relief, but NSAIDs are used over other painkillers for their anti-inflammatory properties so it’s possible they also want to reduce the inflammation to help your surgeon. Either way, you need to make sure the raised bp is resolved prior to going in, so the GP should be your first port of call sooner rather than later imo.
Hi having gone cold turkey with Naproxen bp has started to come down - blinding headache!!!! It was prescribed by doc to help hip pain. highest reading for bp was 191/90. Seeing doc when BP has been monitored for a week. Feel better today . Thank you for your kind comments.Understand need to get BP down before surgery.
No worries - it’s a bit of minefield when you take something for one problem and inadvertently end up causing another altogether, even more so when it could just be coincidence! Glad you’re feeling better today and good luck for your op.
